Skymonster and others, you’re going to be eating your words if something ever did happen to harm innocent lives as a result of security measures being stepped down too soon.
Yes, all this is very much an inconvenience to all passengers (more so business) but I would like to believe it is being implemented with the passengerโs safety in mind. 4 weeks out of 52 is not much to ask if it means it gives the Government(s) time to ensure that all threats their intelligence have acquired have been controlled.
Remember your stereotypical white middle-aged office businessman may also have converted to Muslim and have been brainwashed into terrorist related thoughts?
If there was a liquid bomb in hand luggage that is now in the hold, how is that safer?
Because hold baggage is subject to a much more stringent screening process that is tuned to specifically detect parts of bombs.
Terrorist plot disrupted = disruption = terrorists get their way.
Terrorist plot succeeds = loss of life/disruption = terrorists get their way
I can see what you’re getting at, but I’d much rather there was disruption than loss of lives.
I don’t think disruption means terrorists get their way…….when there are power cuts or bad weather that cause disruption I don’t think anybody credits terrorists with that. Disruption just happens, I wouldn’t give terrorists the satisfaction of thinking they’ve made an impact on us.
well done to our security services.
thanks ๐
I certainly didn’t go into work at 4:30 this morning and expect to work that hard! There’s a lot being done to prevent anything from happening so hopefully nothing will!
The heightened security alerts will be for another 72 hours at least, but stronger security enforcements (than usual) are expected to be implemented for up to 4 weeks.
There are several cancelled flights at EDI (obv Heathrow), and delays are ranging to several hours. Queues at check in are horrendous as can be expected.
I have got my facts right and believe me people say Ryanair aircraft don’t have window blinds and meal trays. Some Ryanair craft do but only older 737-800s.
Do you step into a taxi on the street and huff about the furnishings in there? Cause that is essentially what Ryanair (and other lo-co’s) are – glorified taxis. As many have joked, some may think that O’Leary has contemplated an ‘all standing’ configuration.
Lo-co’s create a balance between service (including furnishings) and fare price. All Ryanair have done is concentrated more on low fare price, in turn reducing service. If you don’t like them, don’t fly them. (that wasn’t directed personally to you tommy, just those who think they are rubbish because they don’t have seat pockets).
Or as some may argue, blame all the meat eaters of the world. Seeing as they reckon the huge increase in cattle for the meat industry is doing a lot more harm than other sources of harmful gasses due to the…..well, fumes from the cattle.
I’m a meat eater myself, but I’m just saying it’s a combined effort. The airline industry is actually making the most effort to reduce emissions. Aerodynamic profiles are for ever being designed and introduced to save on fuel burn, and engine manufactures are putting in an immense effort to make their engines as efficient as they can.
The automotive industry are still turning out more and more fuel guzzling machines and little effort is being put into converting people to buy hybrids, or even design more economic engines. And unless governments world wide switch now to all renewables and/or nuclear, the power you are using to read this post will continue to harm the environment. And as for cows……well, who can live without meat ๐
So……yeah……..how about this for an amazing shot: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1091105&size=L&width=1024&height=695&sok=JURER%20%20%28qngrfgnzc%20%3E%20qngr_fho%28ABJ%28%29%2C%20VAGREINY%2024%20UBHE%29%29%20%20BEQRE%20OL%20ivrjf%20qrfp&photo_nr=5
Plane + Cloud = Wow
When I flew to the Bahamas from EDI with the then new Continental service to EWR, I was search at check in then at boarding.
US flights from EDI (at least) have another company doing security checks before boarding in that instance.
But for this:
“90% of occasions when we pass through they say ‘step aside’ and she gets the full search.”
Sounds like nonsense. Either they are being asked to step aside because they have metal on them under their religious dress i.e. a belt, but they are just taking this as a sign of un-equal treatment, OR by some large coincidence they have been picked more often for a random search. Which is pretty unlikely.
Sounds as though they are using the thorough searching techniques of the airport staff as a means of discriminative search.
It’s the same old story though. A lot of the time the people that are subject to a search and then moan about it, are the same people that would complain if something did happen mid-air and security hadn’t caught an object on the ground. Lose-lose situation

Happy bday, enjoy tomorrows hangover ๐
Thats if freq were to = wavelength, but there is also the velocity of the wave to consider also…
The frequency of a set of waves is set at the source itself. For instance, if Billy pokes a pond with a stick twice each second, the frequency will be 2 Hz.
As the waves travel over the pond’s surface, this frequency will not change. What may change is the distance between waves – the wavelength – and their speed.
http://www.gcse.com/waves/wave_speed.htm
When light waves (and other electromagnetic waves) enter a medium, their wavelength is reduced by a factor equal to the refractive index n of the medium but the frequency of the wave is unchanged.
There was a thing in the news about it the other day (24 hours news, so not a major story). It was interviewing Richard Branson who was saying that BA didn’t want the contract for the new Casino Royal and he went on to say times are changing etc and Virgins superior service is more suited to Bond’s style.
Thanks for the lesson……as yes, I think it is the frequency that changes not the wavelength ๐ Don’t know how I’ve gotten this far in my education  :p
Why would bending light change its frequency? (And therefore wavelength also, as you can’t change one without changing the other).
So because the speed changes, the wavelength must change to keep freq const. Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavelength
So back to civ aviation ๐ I think the best form of radtion you can get in flight is the view of the aurora borealis
Because wave energy travels at different speeds in different mediums. Velocity of the wave ‘v’ vaires with the frequency ‘f’ multiplied by the wavelength ‘lambda’ (v=f x lambda). Therefore when the velocity of the wave is changed the frequency will alter to keep the wavelength constant.
When they say you are exposed to ‘more radiation’ when flying, they may be taking into account the radiation given off by sitting around all the electircal equipment for around 10 hours, plus radiation given off by your fellow passengers……who knows where they are getting their figures from.
If it was that big a deal I’d imagine a lot more fuss would be made about people using air travel
I reckon that looks lovely, good choice for them.
I quite like the E-Series – it’s nice to see an under wing engine design thats not a 737/A319 for a change.
If there were hijackers on a plane now a days, who wanted to use it like in the events of 9/11….would pilots keep the cockpit door closed and land the plane even if it meant the hijackers whould open fire on the 300 or so passengers in the cabin?
If there were no Marshals aboard could they possibly make they choice between the passengers on board or more innocent civilians on the ground?
