    Pagen01,
Sorry for not being clearer. Only the first two, the Devon and the Hunter nose were at Boscombe. The rest were at Hanningfield/stock scrapyard.

    Phantom Phil,
Many thanks for the correction re the typo on the Tiger aircraft. Also when you say the first aircraft is XV393, ie the one at an angle, I am uncertain which one you mean. The one in the foreground is sloping down and the one in the background is sloping up, both relative to the nose. So which one is XV393?

XV587 plus my son. You can see how hard I tried to get him interested in military aviation, sadly I failed.

Some more from my collection, these are from 1992 and 93.

Firstly Boscombe Down. Not too sure of the exact status of these relics at the time nor what their subsequent fate was. No 1 is Devon VP268 out in the long grass and No 2 is what I believe to be a Hunter cockpit.

These are wing sets from the Hawk, all are in a grey colour scheme and presumably resulted from a upgrade programme to the RAF fleet.

    Sea Vixen,
If I remember correctly there was only one Sea Vixen on site at the time of these pics and I believe it was XJ582. Some chunks of the wing fold mechanism are in my study as we speak.

    Pagen01,
I have been reading back over this thread and just realised that I should have responded to your post of some time ago in which you suggested that it might be a good idea to start a Saints picture thread. After I have finished posting the remaining pics on the Scrapyard thread I will try a few of the early St Athan pics and see if people are interested.

Sorry if I gave you the impression that I ignored your suggestion.

Dave F68, I have not heard anyone else say that they cannot see them, I certainly can but then thats probably because I put them there. If there is anything I need to do to fix this please let me know.

I am getting to the end of my collection now, those that are left are mainly at Hanningfield Metals, Essex with a few others thrown in for good measure. I know that there are many Hanningfield pictures on the net so I can call it a day if you wish….or I can just carry on to the bitter end.

The following were all taken on my first visit to Hanningfield Metals on 30 November 1991 after discovering it completely by accident. I did indicate to the guys at the yard that these photos would not be published but as I now live across the pond I am probably failry safe, also of course they are now 20 years old and all the aircraft are long gone so I think any concerns they may have had have all gone away. Actually I think the biggest reason for not wanting them published was that they did not want hordes of pimply youths wearing anoracks and cameras scrambling over their private property.

Anyway onto the pictures. First up is what was reported to me to be the remains of the RAFM Beverley XH124. It appears to be just the cokpit floor with some bits attached.

Please accept my apologies for calling the P1127, a Kestrel. Close but not close enough.

Anyway here are a few more, this time from 1990 starting at RAF Benson with G-ARRV, was this officially an an Avro 748, HS748 or an Andover? They were taken on 03 March 1990.

Finally one that has puzzled me for a long time. I snapped this Tornado wreck at RAF Abingdon on the way out from the BoB display on 15 Sept 1990 but have never been able to trace its identity. Anyone have any thoughts?

Have not posted any pics recently as I have been rather busy so here is another set dating from 84 to 88.

First up are two of the Hunter F51 at Dunsfold on 9 May 1984.

Another Dunsfold one on the same day, the mortal remains of XP976 Kestrel.

Vulcan B2 XM650 at RAF St Athan on 16 October 1984, looks like a Bucc in front of it although I do not know its serial and a Pembroke behind it.

Rhoose this time, Viscount believed to be NRS on 5 Nov 1986

Some more from RAF St Athan, first Victor XL163 and Canberra WK144 on 3 April 1987.

Botswana Dove at Bristol and or Speke

    Thunderbird 167,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your question been away on business and only just got back. Wisconsin in the middle of Feb is NOT a good place to be.

Anyway onto the Dove. I paid a visit to Lulsgate on 2nd April 1972 and found said aircraft in previously described condition. My log indicates that the Varsity (WF376) was structurally complete including engines but sadly lacking flight instruments. Also on the dump were the remains of G-ATBO Cherokee that appeared to have been written off in an accident.

I think it odd that the aircraft would have undergone spares recovery at Speke and the remains roaded down to Bristol but it appears as if that is what happened.

    Thunderbird 167,
Re the Botswana Dove, your records may very well be accurate but all I can say is that when I saw it at Lulsgate it was already in a sorry state. If I remember correctly the engines were missing, it was lying on it’s belly and practically all the internals had been stripped out. I would have thought it unlikely to have been shipped to Speke for final disposal, that would seem an expensive operation for little or no gain. I wonder, therefore if the references to Speke that you quoted should really refer to Lulsgate.

Good to see the photo though, also good to know that some 39 years after the event I can still remember the colour scheme. Senility has not set in completely yet………

I remember the aircraft on the dump at Bristol. The Varsity was fairly easy to get into and I managed to “acquire” a few momentoes. Likewise the Dove, but I seem to remember that it was a foreign registered aircraft and it was blue/white. Is my memory playing tricks on me or was there another Dove before the one in your photos, Varsity???

Some more scrap photos from the 80s.

Firstly a couple from RAF Akrotiri families day on 12 Sept 1981. The Whirlwind flying is XJ437 but I have no idea as to the identity of the wreck. Any ideas?

And about 30 minutes after the above photo….

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Unknown DC6 (or is it a 4, I am hopeless at these Douglas transports) at the airport, Larnaca on 23 Sept 1981.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Another sad sight, this time a group of Vulcans about to meet their end at RAF St Athan on 29 Dec 1981

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

BAe Dunsfold on 10 Jan 1982 found the slightly scratched wings of Hawk T1 XX344. If you remember this was the aircraft that slid inverted down the runway at Boscome Down with the nav still strapped into the rear seat.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Finally for this set, the end approaches for Carvair G-AOFW at Southend on 21 Feb 1982.

PS, I was so intrigued by my question above that I had to go and get out my old logs. It seems the memory is not so bad after all, the Dove I was referring to was A2-ZFM and I am sure it was blue and white. Sadly I did not get a photo of it, probably could afford either the petrol to get to Lulsgate, or the film for the camera but definitely not both. Has anyone else got a picture of it.

    Dr Strangelove,
Thanks for your kind comments, I will keep them coming. I still have another 30 years worth to post yet. As for the Valiant nose, I am not certain but I know there was a lot of speculation at the time that this belonged to XD816 (quoting from memory here). if you remember this was the last one flying and appeared at the RAF Review at RAF Abingdon in 1966.
