Just to prove that I can take some slightly better quality photos, here are a selection from my local yard, that of Carsons Helicopters PA. Since I came to the US some 6 years ago I have not forgotten my roots in British Military and although I am interested in all things aviation, my knowledge oif the equipmernt used by the US military is rudimentary. I will not embarras myself by providing any detail to these shots except to say that they are all in the last 3 years.

    Tony T,
Your pictures put most my early work to shame. If only I could have taken photos of the same quality on my many trips in the 60s, 70 etc. Still they are what they are.

I will continue with some more of mine from the late 70s and into the 80s, there are a couple of civvis creeping in now (well pseudo civvi anyway in the case of the Brit).

First an Argosy shell at RAF Abingdon on 15 Sept 1979

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Another Argosy, this one at NBC Winterbourne Gunner, Wilts.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Britannia OO-YCF Ex XM497 at Stansted on 19 May 1980

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I have this one as a DC6 PH-DSL also at Stansted on the same date.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Back to the Military, XP330 at Stansted on the same date

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Valiant nose at RAE Farnborough (and a couple of cars) on the dump on 1 June 1980

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Vulcan B1 XA903 also at Farnborough

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Harrier XV798 at BAe Dunsfold…..Ah those were the days.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Ditto

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Compare this picture of the Britannia taken on 13 April 1981 with the earlier one above. What a sad sight.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Last one for tonight is that of the rear end of Gnat T1 XS109 after a stint as a BDR airframe also at Dunsfold.

Ian Old, your wish is my command. But first this to Dr Strangelove. I find it fascinating to see the log book entries of the folks that actually flew these aircraft. It somehow adds an extra dimension, where was your father based in 1953?

So on to the log for RAF Catterick for 26 July 1977, and I apologise to those that might find this a bit tedious. I will type the info exactly as it appears in my log but I will try to correct the spelling erros and poor grammer.

WL755 Shackleton MR2, nose burnt and lying in the fire training area on its belly.
XA939 Victor B(K)1 lying on belly minus nose. Acting as its nose was the front end of a white Vulcan.
XJ895 Sycamore HR14 coded SU, crumpled wreck.
XN559 Jet Provost T3, fuselage only, lying on its side.
WL629 Varsity T1 coded K, a bit battered but still complete.
    WV736 Pembroke C1 dismantled. 60 Sqn markings.
    WF422 Varsity T1 coded B, silver/dayglo.
    7912M/WN895 Hunter rear fuselage only.
Unknown Meteor T7 with yellow T bands in the burning area. Burnt.
Remains of a Shackleton with what appears to the a Varsity tail tagged on. Used for fire practise earlier on in the visit.
    TG536 Hastings, minus engines.
XE851 Vampire T11 coded B. Due to be exchanged with an example in private ownership in London.
    XH647 Victor B(K)1 untouched. 57 Sqn markings.
    WJ896 Varsity T1 coded D.
Unknown Pembroke marked CG partly camoflaged believed to be WV754.
WN310 Meteor T7 standing on nose. Burnt.
XM997 LightningT4 minus wings, tail etc. Used for rescue training.
    XJ380 Sycamore HR14 coded SM.
    XN925 Buccaneer S1.
XH228 Canberra B(I)8 coded B ex RAF St Athan.
A panel from Meteor WH250 was noted lying near the Lightning.

In the Safety Section hanger were the following:
    VW452 Meteor T7 nose section, coded S.
    WT362 Canberra B(I)8 nose section, coded R.
    XA939 Victor B(K)1 nose section.
Canberra B2 nose section, the ejection seat was marked WH925.
Unknown Hunter nose section reported to be WT646/7410M.

The ejection seat section held four seats only one was marked ie Sea Vixen XS583.

    Gliding involved WB979 and XE808.

I have not changed my recording of aircraft serial number or aircraft mark. Any errors were those made 34 years ago and I can no longer be held responsible.

    Hope this is useful/interesting.

I am glad that you seem to be enjoying seeing some of my old photographs, the positive comments are good as they keep me posting.

As for the Varsities at RAF Catterick during my visit on 26 July 1977, according to my log, present were the following:

    WL629 Coded K
    WF422 Coded B
    WJ896 Coded D

Obviously I only photographed the first two.

As I was lucky enough to have unlimited access during this day I have a complete listing of all the occupants on site including those of the Safety Section if anyone is interested. Just let me know.

So to catch up on a few other pictures that somehow did not appear in previous posts. I tried to make them all chronological but obviously failed.

First up this time are two shots of Hunter 8001M at BAe Dunsfold on 28 Jan 1979. Notice that it appears to be wearing Class B markings ie G-9-428.

Now another Varsity, this time its WF417 of BLEU at RAE Aberporth Dec 1977.

OK Now its aircraft recognition time…..list the types in this shot of the dump at RAE Farnborough on 1 April 1979.

Many thanks for the correction. It was a very long time ago and I know I was based in Kingston upon Hull at the time. As I was typing Huddersfield, I wondered if my memory was playing tricks but I thought if I am wrong I am sure someone will point out the error of my ways. And they did, many thanks.

Yes I can still remeber the smell of the smelter and also the general run down feel and look of the entire place. It seemed almost to be a fitting end to old discarded airframes that served the country so well in former years. Of course I could think of a much better ending but …..

Interesting comments about the helmet shot. I have felt ever since I took it that it had an odd erie feeling to it,. Difficult to describe but its there nevertheless. Thats why I included it.

Glad you approve of the pictures taken for my own interest so many years ago, I never had an inkling that they would be on such public view later on. I am very happy to share with interested folks.

This set of photographs were taken on 2 April 1979 at a real scrapyard, ie Siddal nr Huddersfield.

First up is a JP XP664.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Lightning F1 XM137

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Another Lightning, this time XP761

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This next one is recorded in my files as an unknown Meteor T7 however on looking at the picture again I am not so sure that it is a two seater. Any comments??

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The only remnant of Vulcan XA899 that I could find in the yard. I wonder if the rest had already been melted down or was it disposed of elsewhere?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Moving on to some rotary wing jobs well ex rotary wing really. Starting with Wessex XT774.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Whirlwind HAS7 XG597. Wasn’t this the one that used to provide SAR cover at Warton?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Another Whirlwind this one is reported as XL868

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Last Whirlwind, XM663.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This one is not really aviation related but I thought it worthy of inclusion…..

    The last ones at Catterick

Here is the last few taken at RAF Catterick on 26 July 1977. I had to rush through taking these as I had to get over to RAF Finningley for the last practise session before the Silver Jubillee flypast. I was lucky to attend both the official Royal day and also the first of the two public days but that as they say is another story and another few dozen pictures.

We start off with a couple of Pembrokes, the first one being WV736.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Followed by WV754 (I think).

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Shackleton WL755 looking very close to expiring. Notice the Meteor T7 that was featured in an earlier post.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I know someone was waiting for the pictures of the Varsities at RAF Catterick to appear. I hope you are not too disappointed and that they show one of the aircraft you were/are interested in.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Lastly the second Varsity, WL629.

Firstly Canberra B(I)8 XM275 lying forlorn at RAF Wattisham on 30th May 77.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Now moving on to my second visit to RAF Catterick, all of these were taken on 26th July 77.

    Another Canberra, this time XH228.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Hastings TG536.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Meteor WN310.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

and lastly for this set another Meteor, this time a T7. Unfortunately no serial was visible. Any ideas anyone???

    Moving on to 1977

Just a couple for this post. Lightning T4 XM967 was on the dump at Kemble for quite a while and I captured these shots on 3rd Jan 1977. The second is a close up of the detail just below the cockpit. Please excuse the dust on the slides………

Some very sad pictures from 1976

First in this set is Argosy T2 XP447 awaiting the chop at RAF Kemble. Photo taken on 3rd Jan 1976. Notice the ex 46 Sqn Andover in the background awaiting a fate that was unknown at the time.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Next comes the RB 211 test bed aircraft G-AXLR ex XR809 (I think, please correct me if I am wrong). Also at Kemble on the same date as the Argosy.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

For those of a nervous disposition and a particularly soft spot for the Victor please look away now. The following four shots were all taken at RAF St Athan (Picketstone site) on 2 June 1976. I was fortunate to get a guided tour of the storage, spares recovery and dismantling facility here, the only such visit I ever achieved at St Athan. In another hanger that was open to me provided I left my camera outside, were the full set of RAF Jetstreams, all cocooned awaiting someone finding a use for them. It was affectionately known as the “Hangar of Shame”. Anyway enough of that, on to the Victors.

First one up is XH589 with the removal of the tailplane taking place outside, this enabled the airframe to be moved inside for full spares recovery.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Next one is XH620 inside the hangar undergoing spares recovery before being dumped outside.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

    Then comes XH674

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

and finally for this set XM718 stripped bare and on the dump awaiting cutting up and melting down…….

You really should not encourage me….,.This could go on for quite a while yet.

17 September 1975 A couple of Varsities at RAF Kemble awaiting their turn for the JCB (that was how they were “dismantled” in those days). Sorry I do not have the serials to hand at the moment but I know they are in my logbook at home.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The next three are rather poor pictures fior which I apologise. If only digital was available in those days and if only I could have afforded one…. The first one is a Meteor at Tarrant Rushton taken on 4 Oct 1975 and is obviously WM234.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A couple from RAF Bicester, firstly Ex A&AEE Hastings TG500 followed by an even poorer shot of Whirlwind XK937.

    Another bunch…

I have not heard anyone complaining that I am posting too many pictures so here goes with another set. There should be 7 in total if I dont screw things up.
Starting with two Victors on the scrapheap at RAF St Athan taken on 24 April 1975. For the record they were XA930 and XH587.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Now on to a couple of Whirlwind XP363 taken at RAF Halton on 28 June 1975

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I told you I have lots of photos of the Argosies at RAF Kemble, so here is another view on 17 Sept 1975

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And to finish this set here are three pictures of the Meteors that were disposed of at RAF Kemble. Pictures taken on 17 Sept 1975.

Firstly the famous or was it infamous snow plough Meteor WF826. Does anyone know whether this conversion actually worked and was it ever used in anger? I have never seen anything in writing and Google does not throw up much either.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Next two Meteors WD706 and WM148 plus an unknown Varsity.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

and bringing up the rear, so to speak, is another shot of the Meteors, this time WD706, WM148 and WM270.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Thats it for now I better get back to work.

A few more from my collection in the period 1974-1975.

Shackleton WB847 at RAF Kinloss on a sunny day 27 August 1974.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hastings TG514 at RRE Pershore on my birthday 31 August 1974.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Argosies and Meteors at RAF Kemble on 8th Feb 1975. The Meteors were WL349 and WF991. Anyone know their ultimate fates, were they scrapped?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

More Agosies at RAF Kemble this time on 8th Feb 1975.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Lastly XF707 Shackleton MR3 at RAF Benson on 31 May 1975

Some more from my collection this time from 1974 and my first attempts at colour…..

Lightning T5 XV329 being reduced to produce at RAF Leconfield on 22 August

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Next comes a hovercraft at RNAS Lee on Solent XS655 not sure what type.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Then one of the many photos I have of the storage/scrapping area at 5MU RAF Kemble. This one taken on 18 August

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And lastly for this session, a colour shot of two Meteors (WM151 and VW478) also at RAF Kemble in August. Cf to the black and white shot posted earlier on.

    Porton Down

The establishements at Porton Down have changed their names numerous times over the years. When I was there in the early 1970’s it consisted of the Chemical Defence Establishment and the Microbiological Research Establishment. A nearby site at Winterbourne Gunner was called the Nuclear and Biological Warefare Establishment and was also a MOD run affair but totally separate from Porton Down. I think thats about all I can say, the signing of the Official Secrets Act in 1972 precludes anything else (probably).

In some earlier posts this aircraft was mentioned. Its not a scrapyard photo but was taken at Coventry on 29 Oct 1972.
