I’m looking for a copy of the ad which made me sign up. 1972, News of the World, featured Landrover, palm trees and two airmen and an airwoman in KD. I thought ‘Yeah, that’s likely to happen to me’ and a couple of years later I was posted to Hong Kong!
Sorted, JU – V
🙂
Grandfather, Lt Harry Waghorn, on my father’s side enlisted in WW1, was commissioned and ended up in Egypt in the RFC.
His three sons:
Sgt Peter Waghorn, Battle of Britain pilot with 111 and 249 squadrons, KIA Malta 11 April 1941
Sgt Bryan Waghorn, 129 squadron, lost over the channel 28 October 1941
Mne Gordon Pursey (my father), Royal Marine Commandos, served just after the war in Palestine.
My mother was WRAF, three of her brothers were in The Royal Marines, think her father was Army.
I wanted to get my licenses when I left the RAF but it was too costly. But as to whether you need them yourself to build/rebuild an aircraft…. the 109 ‘Black 6’ was rebuilt by volunteers, mainly RAF but not as far as I know licensed. Russ Snadden was a pilot, John Elcombe worked for BT, and I and some others definitely did not have CAA licenses. Always fancied getting an aircraft to rebuild myself if I had the space, time and money.
The Eagle in Woodford Green was used by pilots from North Weald, don’t know if it still exists. Photo below shows two sgt pilots of 249 Squadron, Waghorn and Smyth, on 1 Nov 1940.
MarkG beat me to it. DME aerials, certainly fitted to FGA9s. It was a bit of a squeeze to slide past between the aerial and the fueslage to get down the intake to inspect the compressor blades.
XG252 ! That aircraft gave us a lot of grief when we had it in for servicing when I was at Wittering
Great photos – especially the Hunters. look forward to seeing more.
DanS333 – I’m about to embark on a similar project! Aircraft lined up are an Airfix Heron and a Heller Rapide so far.
Airfix figures were OO/HO and if you look at the size differences in the range you can see the variation; OO is 1/76 and HO is 1/87 – and of course the kits were 1/72
The difference between 1/72 and 1/76 is negligible unless you’re a rivet counter.
The pictures of the 109 marked ‘CV’ are of course what we now know as ‘Black 6’
Congratulations Andy
I should be there as it’s just down the road from me.
Avpin ! I remember it well. Got soaked in the stuff once when I clipped the locking wire off the drain valve cap ready to empty the tank on the Hunter – except I clipped the wrong bit of wire so when I undid the cap the whole drain valve came out covering me in the delightful stuff from head to foot…
Great display by Peter in the Hurricane even though it was a bit windy. And, at the request of TexanTomCat a photo of Hunter F2 WN904 ‘Heidi’ with myself as we’re both 60 this year. Thanks for taking the photo Ben 😀
