@ wieesso – thanks for the additional two idents
@ Gerry – that’s great but not essential so don’t worry about it too much.
Now to concentrate on 46, 111, and 249 squadrons and the ever elusive 261 Hurricanes
– and 129 squadron Spitfires
Thanks very much Gerry. I can make that model now 🙂
After a couple of emails to my MP, Michael Ellis, and pointing him to this thread I received this:
Dear Ian,
Thank you for your email.
It was my understanding that the Ministry of Defence do not believe it to be Flight Sergeant Copping due to several factors including the locations of the bones, the aircraft and the parachute. If they have not made this determination, I believe they should.
I know the MoD are in touch with the family and if anything happens they will be notified immediately. The MoD treats lost servicemen and women very seriously and I have every faith they will handle this specific matter with the family with the utmost respect it deserves.
I am a proud advocate and passionate defender of HM Armed Forces and was in fact at an RAF event in Parliament last night. However I intend to make some enquiries about this matter with a Defence Minister and will pass on your concerns regarding Flt. Sgt. Copping.
If I can be of assistance in any further matter please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Yours sincerely,
Michael
Well I’ve e-mailed my MP, hope it helps.
Ian, ex-RAF
Welcome to the forum WW
I’d like to see WR539 again as it was the squadron ‘gate guard’ – actually outside the line offices at Kai Tak while I was there. We were asked to dismantle it for shipment to Hendon, which started off very carefully but then we were told to get it ready quick and ‘careful’ went out the window. The pod then sat on sandbags outside the hangar for ages in all weathers. I was not happy that my colleagues had to do a hatchet job when in reality there was no hurry and it could have suffered a lot less. Somewhere I’m sure I have a photo of it complete but it’s on a tiny neg, 110/126 film, which I cannot scan in and still see with my equipment. However here’s a picture of WR539 waiting to go home, sorry but the neg has suffered from the same neglect as the aircraft…
Beautiful pictures of the memorial. Like your photos of RASFM as well especially the Sunderland and launch, oh and Black 6 as well 😀
Could it be a variant of the Solar T39 gas turbine?
Good luck TTC, looking forward to seeing your Hunter progress – me being ex Hunter ground crew and you just up the road 😀
Pretty sure the Italy Star is just for Italy. Malta personnel received the Africa Star.
I started with N gauge then moved to OO/HO when my first son was born and Hornby brought out the Thomas range. Cleared a lot out some years ago via car boot sales but kept a bit back to start a small branch line layout. The Thomas stuff is safely boxed away though 🙂 Massive improvements in the last 20 years but Peco track for quality and range of items is still my first choice.

You have no idea how jealous I am! My son enquired about a flight in a Hunter for me – for my 60th birthday – with a Hunter operator and was told ‘no go’ as they were not permitted to do ‘commercial’ flights in ‘military’ aircraft. I shall now go and cry over my beer 🙁
Sgt Peter Waghorn, Battle of Britain Hurricane pilot, KIA Malta April 1941, age 20
Sgt Bryan Waghorn, Spitfire pilot, lost over the Channel October 1941, age 19
Great additions to your collection.
