It had apparently landed with an engine problem. It had moved by the following week.
This will be a great a/c again once it has been restored to flying condition.
Frank66 – picture from Fantasy of flight a couple of weeks ago for you.
Here is another black one at Sun’n’fun this year
I went on thursday – part of a family holiday in Florida! I was a bit disappointed there were not many warbirds present. Massive turn out from all the othere types though. Very bad for my poor feet!
I will post some pics soon.
If you go to his home page – select tools – you will find the tools he used.
They consist of scalpels and tweezers so I would guess they are for modelling!
Great pics though.
No – you may then need a double roll-over to afford one!
I don’t think the real Steve Patterson should apologise for anything. It was brave of him to stick his head above the parapet at all with Mr K spraying bullets of invective at anyone who has a few £ or $ to their name.
I have no feeling of envy for those who can afford warbirds. I am glad they spend their money on keeping such aircraft alive for the future rather than buying another boat, house or car.
I hope the real Steve Patterson will continue to give us insights of what it is really like to own a warbird. Hopefully this will keep us going until we all win the lottery however I suspect large numbers of lottery winners amongst the readers of this forum could lead to serious inflation in warbird values!
PS Will anyone be at the Sun ‘n’ Fun event in April? I hope to be there.
Does the detail matter? Yes it does to me now (to my wifes annoyance) but in 1969 seeing the aircraft flying over Ipswich where I lived at the time kindled an interest in me at 12 years old to match my fathers at the same age during the war.
I learnt that the Messerschmidts and Heinkels used in the filming had Merlin engines and it inspired an interest in seeing the real thing. I collected the cards with the bubble gum and the excellent series of books.
I remember seeing the aircraft at Duxford for the filming and opposite on the hillside was the French Chateau used in the early sequences. It was a flat piece of scenery! A film prop.
At the time there weren’t the aircraft to provide a historically accurate record – witness the Proctukas! – but it was enough to give a better and more balanced view of the conflict than the propaganda films that had gone before. It was also in colour which was a decision that made the use of newsreel impossible.
SPR is a recent film using the latest techniques and knowledge. It is a masterpiece but it does not mean that all modern films are the same. Pearl Harbour compared with Tora Tora Tora is a good example of this!
It would be great to have a remake of the BOB that is historically accurate and I hope that the studios will fund such an epic.
I find it hard to believe we are complaining about the value of Legends. It is a tribute to the determination of pilots through the ages and those determined to keep their aircraft flying.
I remember as a kid the Battle of Britain Day air displays in the 70’s. There was a display from a Hurricane and a Spitfire and that was the sum total of world war II aircraft. We now have a thriving historic aircraft business in this country that has enabled such a high quality airshow.
Legends is a major showcase for the restoration movement in the UK and without the interest generated in the public at large the nanny state would find it easy to restrict flying historic aircraft in any form.
Betamax then?
Is it available on wax cylinder – the format of the future
This shows international co-operation at it’s best.
Without technical assistance we cannot get a camera around a small part of the world within a generation!
Hey guys lets decide a day when we all take a photo and post it that day from all over the world – that might work!
This is my current desktop. Taken at Flying Legends last year.
