That article looks outdated, there are now far more than 8 Raptors and they are operational since almost one year.
Both GR1/4 and F3 Tornados can carry the outer hardpoints or not π
But the Super Hornet cannot give its missiles the kinetic advantage of higher supersonic speeds (Flanker can), neither can it run away from anything except maybe F-5.
I like the idea of an A-6F or A-7F. Give them modern afterburning turbofans and they can defend themselfes much like a SH. Supersonic speed isnt needed, it would be provided by NATFs.
The F-15E has no problems in very low level flight thanks to its LANTIRN system, as long as the speed doesnt exceed 900km/h. More, and it starts getting rough π
13 tons empty weight π
The Hornets design is not really optimised for supersonic speeds. That was already obvious with the F-18A. Strange, because the old F-17 was not so bad. Now, the Super Hornet is even worse than a legacy Hornet. Everytime the basic Cobra design was enlarged, performance was lost. I dont know much about aerodynamics, but it seems to me the original LWF platform is not a good starter for a 13 ton class heavy strike fighter.
I read somewhere (I even think it was here) that the transonic drag increase on the Hornet results from the “negative area rule” fuselage. Because the fuselage is widest right under the wings, and if you add the Sparrow/targeting pod stations, it is even worse. I cant think of any other fighter with the intakes located so far aft.
Cool, that F-18L even has non airbrake pylons π
The Crusader needed 4 guns because they jammed a lot esp. under g load.
Of its 18 victories, only one MiG was shot down by gun fire anyway, the rest were mostly AIM-9D Sidewinders.
Even if the F-8 was not much more manouverable than other American fighters of the vietnam era, i like it. Its a single seat pure fighter with guns. The best fighter of its time imho.
Since EF replies to enquiries about the maximum loads of the hardpoints by saying that unfortunately, they are unable to disclose that information since their customers regard it as classified (I’ve seen one such reply), I’m not sure what official specs you refer to. Can you be more specific about the source?
All the estimates I’ve seen are based on gossip, & the stores seen on actual aircraft & on the pictures (diagrams & CGI) released by EF & the air forces, & on the few public statements such as those on the RAF website – which specifically states that one load is 2 Storm Shadow, 2 1500 litre tanks & 1 1000 litre tank.
There you have it – its classified. I wonder why. :diablo:
I really dont remember the source after the years. Maybe ill find it.
At least i found a windtunnel model with 5 Paveway 4 2000 lb bombs. Interesting.
So you’re saying that Eurofighter Gmbh is deliberately disseminating false information about what Typhoon can carry on which pylon? And the RAF has been fooled by it? (Note that the RAF website repeats the information from Eurofighter in the links I supplied).
Seems hard to believe. What’s your evidence that they’re lying?
A few years ago, official EF specs said the inner pylons are rated for 1000lb class stores. I dont know if they changed that, but pics available so far say they did not.
Its just strange there are no pics of heavy stores there, whereas you can find tons of pics with all kinds of weapons, some of them are years away from operational use…
You’ve miscounted. Try again.

Doesnt prove anything. We have already discussed this matter and no one has provided a picture with heavy stores on the inner pylons let alone Taurus stand off missiles.
The heaviest load ive seen there is 2 cluster bombs on double ejector racks for about 550kg.
If you have a pic, I’d like to see it π
And bring_it_on, those were 1000lb bombs.
I firmly believe the Typhoon compliments the F22, more so then the F35. The latter is trying to do too much in one airframe. Tobe relly effective it needs external stores and then bang goes the stealth. Yes it can carry 2 1000lb JDAM internally and that will suffice for low intensity warfare such as Iraq but a major conflict? well we shall see.
2 2000lb JDAMs is what F-16/F-18 carry, so its enough. The EF will have problems with such a load being restricted to only 3 heavy stations…
Stealth has a finite life. Eventually a counter-measure will be developed, increasing the chances of detection.
Which is even worse for Typhoon and the like. No matter what, F-35 will always enjoy a detection advantage.
It wasnt called JΓ€ger 90 in Germany for no reason. π
But better late than never.
