The good thing about the EA-18G Growler is that its speed/range is not a problem and it reduces the number of different aircrafts aboard the carrier.
Now the Super Hornet itself…
Does it offer the range/speed/payload capabalities like the planes it replaced (the A-6 and F-14)? From a pilot point of view, this does not matter much because the pilot does not fly the missions he cant or he does not have the planning headaches for tanker support. And as long as he does not meet a Su-30 or something, he also does not notice the SHs shortcomings. I have seen a Super Hornet demo and it was impressive. Im sure its a wonderful plane to fly, and maintain too. Its man/machine interface is a generation ahead of the F-14.
But, can anyone answer the questions above with ‘yes’?
Wrong. I have read posts from two pilots on other forums saying this isn’t true. It might take a long time to get there but it will do it. Hopefully those new engines will get installed into the SH sometime soon.

Internal fuel for the F-15C is 6100kg, for the F-15E its a little less than 6000kg. The CFTs add about 4500kg of fuel.
And the F-15C fleet does not fly with CFTs since the Kevlavik Eagles are gone, except Israeli B/D twin seaters.
Range figures i dont know, but a clean Super Hornet might have about the same range as a clean Eagle. Add some heavy stuff, and the situation changes.
For India, since their looking for a medium sized fighter, i think both are overkill. Eurofighter, Rafale, MiG-29 and the latest (and thus heaviest) F-16 are medium sized. They already have the large Su-30, so it doesnt make much sense to buy another big player.
I think its 4500kg for the Rafale and 5000kg for the Eurofighter.
Since the Rafale is smaller (9200kg vs 11000kg) it has the better fuel fraction. I dont think however theres a noteworthy difference in range.
Its about 1300kg lighter, or about 3000lb.
Thats without CFT of course. With CFTs, the F-15 is in a completely other league.
The F-18E is almost as heavy as the F-15E. Both are not medium sized fighters.
Though the Super Hornets performance is. 😀
The camo looks cool. Gives the Eagles almost a factory fresh look.
Now the best pilots (instructors) get the chance to fly the best fighter which cant be a bad idea. 🙂
We are talking about an F-15E variant, most likely based on the excellent F-15SG.
If you ask me, the only thing a Super Hornet can do better is land on an aircraft carrier 😉
In USAF service, the Es will be there for quite some time. The lates examples are only a few years old.
And the C will be remain a while also. One or more ANG units are even converting from F-16 to F-15. What a brilliant move. 🙂
The problem is probably the chaff dispenser located under the intake.
The Litening pod looks like it could be big enough to block the dispenser.
Well, if they are willing to pay 60 millions for a chopper, some used F-16s or the like are well within their range.
NZ should get a fleet of Su-34s, just to show them off to Australia. 😀
And did the F-2 cost four times the price of the F-15?
I dont know how much Japan paid for their home grown Eagles, but given the F-2s price tag, it is well possible.
Since when do 2000lb LGBs fit into the F-35?
I understand 500lb will fit, and the big JDAMs.
Which are not as accurate as LGBs for that matter.
They have 12 F-5E Tigers leased from Switzerland. The 23 or so remaining Drakens have been retired in 2005.
Plus some Saab 105 trainers which are also being used for air surveillance.
