What’s wrong with having a backup? We’ve yet to see how the helmet performs in an operational environment. But now matter how reliable the helmet, a simple fixed display is always going to be more reliable than a portable one, there’s simply more to go wrong.
And in case of a bird strike, it’s also nice when you don’t have to rely on a single piece canopy alone.

Hint: a little bit more than 55 million.

EXAMPLE: Obviously the F35A SHOULD have had a CHOICE between the Boom or drouge style A2A refueling, as every Nation MAY NOT use only the Boom style, should a Nation be forced into buying the more expensive “B” simply because of the refueling issue?…IF the “A” was a better choice EXCEPT for that, should the Nation look at buying a whole new fleet of tankers?….
Actually there is a choice for the A-model. It can have either or maybe even both (don’t know if that’s still possible) but of course you would have to pay for that. As far as I know, Canada decided to stick with the boom equipped F-35A afterall.
As far as I know, for the air defence role that is not an issue as Canada relies on US tankers when needed. The 2 CC-150 tankers don’t deploy to the north to support the Hornets. In Canadas case, no, it aint, the main task there is interception, and with an operational cost higher,
but (intercept) performance lower, it just aint.
How is interception performance lower when an armed F-35 is faster and offers more range?
True the F404-400 equipped F-18 is not the yardstick for modern fighter performance but it is what Canada currently flies and at least the F-35 managed to beat that.
Here’s a quote from an article in Combat Aircraft Nov. 2014, from a Dutch F-35 pilot: “The F-35A turns like a heavyweight F-16, but climbs, descends and accelerates like a clean one.” I would read that as mixed signals…
Devils Advocate time here: IF Canada and Russia have SOME simular issues , and Russia has built decades worth of Aircraft that are designed to deal WITH just those issues, rough terrain landing / take off, cold weather, massive distances to cover, reliable multi engined aircraft, built tough to take a rough environment…would, THEORETICALLY, Canada find better value and a better aircraft for OUR situation by looking at the Russian PAK FU?…or the latest and greatest in the SU-30’s?…

I did not post any stats for the F-35 (the other graph is for the F-18A-D) but the F-35 did demonstrate a top speed of Mach 1.6+, for all I can remember. Meaning in the real world its faster than the Hornet which is all I wanted to point out.
That being said, compared to other jets, the F-35 with 6 AAMs probably has an inferior flight envelope.

Someday, I am sure that the F35 will be spectacular, will that make it the right choice for every Country?…no, will it be great plane capable of living up to it;s EXPECTED / POTENTIAL capabilities, I am sure it will…but until measurable ability is met, it remains in the realm of estimated / expected potential, not fact.
I’m sorry ,but that is how my mind works, I cannot look at promises and expectations on paper and take that as fact…..it;s like saying a teenager has the POTENTIAL to get high 90’s for marks in all subjects at school, however, in reality his performance is much different, gaining 50’s and 60’s. So he still retains the POTENTIAL, but FACTUAL PERFORMANCE is markedly less. So what is the end result for the student?…..does he graduate on POTENTIAL or Factually graded ability and effort….was the discrepancy between the POTENTIAL and the Factual Ability caused by over assessment of the Potential initially, where all the factors accounted for? or was it that the student simply didn;t try because he found teenage girls more interesting…

I get your point but if you only want something proven, the choice is limited pretty much to the F-15, F-16, F-18EF and Rafale. The first two probably are not realistic options (though I’d like to see an Eagle in RCAF markings 🙂 ) which leaves us with either the Super Hornet or the Rafale. Gripen E will not be ready before 2018, Typhoon lacks true multirole capacity.
Chances are though that by the time Canada will phase out the CF-18, all of the above will be ready (minus the F-16 probably, out of production). Even the F-35 because uncle sam relies on it and has to make it work.
Vnomad, you stated that the F35 matches or exceeds the F18 E/F on most performance perimeters …yet that is NOT the case…the F35 is a nominal top speed of mach 1.6, and can only sustain Mach 1.2 for 9.8 Minutes….it has a “clean” range of 1,200 nmi………well lets see, the F18 E/F tops out at mach 1.8…has an operational range of 1,275 nmi, WITH external AIM9X Missiles….the F35 can carry 4 x AIM 120’s or 4 AIM 9X, PLUS a further 2 AIM 7’s or another 2 AIM 120’s…plus any variety of air to ground missiles and a huge variety of guided or dumb bombs.. to a total of 17,750 lbs….. the F35…just 4 missiles or bombs internally ( clean..so “Stealth”)…or if the external pylons are used…up to a total of 18,000 lbs…so lets see…..just off the top, NO and NO..and with NO stealth and a full loadout, just barely by 250 lbs……..the F35 does NOT meet or exceed the perimeters

As you can see, the Super Hornet comes close to Mach 1.6 armed with 4 AAMs ie not faster than F-35. And that is without any pylons on the wing or fuel tanks. For comparison, your legacy Hornet is a bit faster. Still the Hornets family strong point isn’t speed. Nor range for that matter. F-35 ferry range is unknown. 1200nm is simply combat radius x2 ie combat range.
If they manage to add another 2 AAMs to the 4 internally carried (planned iirc), and find a way for 2 of those to be AIM-9, you have a Mach 1.6 jet armed with the typical 4+2 AAMs. Better than the Hornet in any case.

for Canada, Super Hornets, Gripens or Rafael’s are all much better choices for Canada…by the way, SAAB offered full production IN country, full upgrades every two years etc…and so did the French with their Rafaels……….the USA, nope…just “some” parts made in Canada….and never ending costs…….
You do realise the Gripen is a single engined jet, right?
By the way, when Canada opted to go with the F18’s, we where offered the F16’s, the F15’s and any number of other airframes…..the F15’s where NOT what we wanted…to big, to expensive and high maintenance….F16’s were discounted SOULY on being single engined!…..so for canada to do a complete reversal for a “single engined” airframe of untried and untested reliabilty, because, lets face it NONE have flown in combat, NONE have enough time on the airframe or powerplant to get realistic information on maintenance etc……
Solely? Better radar, better armament (an interceptor without BVR armament?) and allegedly better offsets might have favoured the Hornet aswell I imagine…
The best choice for a pure interceptor nowadays would be an advanced F-15 model imho. Offers the best range, speed and radar performance. Probably not more expensive to run than an F-18E/F.
For expeditionary stuff, the F-35 sure has its advantages as it eases cooperation. There are 6 CF-18s in the Baltics right now and 6 more are on their way to Kuwait. If you don’t expect similar deployments to disappear for the next 40 years, the F-35 might be the best option.
Fuel is under eight pounds per gallon. The FJ-44-4 would need a weight offset of 90 gallons, not 148 gallons per engine.
Weight offset is meaningless. A simple drawing of a 370gal tank with an FJ33 engine in the back suggests you lose about 110gal of volume per engine. The FJ44 might not even fit – its fan diameter is larger than overall diameter of FJ33. In the 600gal fuel tank with an FJ44, you’d probably lose about 30% capacity aswell or about 180gal.

All of this doesn’t consider the added weight (=more drag), increased drag due to additional air intakes, and center of gravity issues when the tank is empty – that’s a lot of weight at the back. Dropping one of those would be really interesting. Some fins at the front might be needed = more drag.
And of course there’s still the issue with the main engines. As has been mentioned, fuel consumption goes up when running on less then optimum thrust settings for cruise.

There is an obvious reason as to why there’s not that many pics of Rafales and Gripens, in NATO, Rafale is only used by the French, Gripen in small numbers by Czech and Hungarian AFs which aren’t neighbours. On larger exercises, they do meet, such as Tigermeet.

Interceptors. Fighters always carried their missiles externally. If bays truly were better, all the engineers designing those fighters up to the F-22 must have been stupid. For stealth designs, the drawbacks of internal carriage have been outweighed.
Maybe this helps re center of gravity. In vertical lift mode, engine thrust of 18,000 lbf (80 kN), lift fan thrust of 20,000 lbf (89 kN) and roll post thrust of 3,900 lbf (17 kN) must balance the aircraft. When added together, the “center of thrust” is at the blue line approximately. CG should be near that line. And that seems about right, the F-35B with its lift fan weight not being burnt in flight, would have interesting landing characteristics otherwise.

Using the same drawing, distance between fuselage and pylon is around 1.46 m (F-16: 1.12 m), distance between A/G pylons is 1.17 m, 1.28 m for the F-16. A little bit less indeed, but drawing accuracy may not be 100% aswell.
