I always liked the A-7 due to its payload/range capabilities. Maximum external load was restricted to around 12’000lbs (?) at full internal fuel though, but that’s still plenty.
Here’s some operational loadouts from Vietnam:

8x Mk 82, 2 Sidewinders and presumably 2 fuel tanks.

4x Mk 84

Try that with your F-16/F-18 :eagerness:

Well to be fair F-22 and F-111 are actually pretty close. That is if you define size as weight which I do. 😉
Raptor around 19 tons, F-111 around 21 tons depending on version.

About time someone posted a pic of God’s jet!

So god is Finnish?
Would make sense though considering Santa is Finnish, living in Rovaniemi where F-18s are based 😀

GBU-32.
Wonder if it can carry 5 ie if they wired the front/aft racks.

German Tornado with nuke. Not many pictures around, altough JaboG 33 is still tasked with nuklear deterrence.

That pic shows a Tornado carrying a telelens recce pod…
So, anyone have a pic of a GAF Tornado with B61?

J-10B’s AESA cooling vent is pretty much the same as the one on F-16E. J-10B looks scarier than F-16E due to DSI air intake.

That looks like a formation light strip to me.
But it doesn’t matter as J-10B looks scarier.

The Swiss Hornet demo team puts on really impressive displays. F404-402 power coupled with Super Hornet FCS :eagerness:

Sorry, I mixed up Flanker versions and forgot about the Su-35S/Su-27SM2
I didn’t forget about the Su-30MKI but I think it’s too heavily modified with all the weight increase at the front.

Regarding complexity, pilot input isn’t what I had in mind. I’m surprised there is a need to flip a switch though…
FCS software development is the issue. Before spending money on tvc, customers seem to consider other areas more important.

The F100-232 would require the big mouth intake on the F-16 like GE powered versions. Previous PW powered F-16s including those using the -229 engine require the small intake.
The F-15 wouldn’t need bigger inlets.

Re installed thrust, the power point someone linked here or in another thread included this interesting graph:

OK, F-22 is in fact not a good example because it would have the flat nozzles anyway due to RCS and IR signature management.
Still, nothing is for free including the KLIVT nozzle. I’ve found 90kg on this site: http://www.leteckemotory.cz/motory/rd-33/
Thats 180kg on the back of the airplane which need to be balanced. Plus of course the needed adjustments to the flight control system. If you incorporate tvc right from the start like on the PAK-FA, you can reduce size and thus weight of control surfaces. But that hasn’t been done on the MiG or other possible candidates for retroffiting. Bottom line is, no one seems to bother with tvc on previously non-tvc designs.

Maybe when the pilot uses them for an improper maneuver.
How exactly can TVC be a disadvantage when all it does is provide potentially more maneuvering envelopes?

That is like saying the post-stall characteristics of the Su-27 are potentially disadvantageous if the pilot does a tail-slide at the wrong time.

Disadvantages are additional weight and complexity. The F-22 is a prime example.
Advantages are found in post stall manoeuvring ie where no one wants to go and at supersonic speeds, which is mainly relevant for supercruisers.

The report talks about retaining andu pgrading 178 F-15C/Ds.

Given that a similar number of a/c only supports 6 x 18 a/c F-22 units, it seems 3 F-15 units will be deactivated by 2020.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the 1 USAFE squadron goes, given draw down in Europe.

Then maybe two more ANG or the two remaining PACAF F-15 units in Kadeena?

Aren’t the Lakenheath F-15Cs bound for retirement? Anyway, my guess is they will go sooner or later without replacement.
The two squadrons in Kadena might get F-35, or maybe F-22. Meaning one of the current F-22 operators would have to give up the Raptor of course.

Finns, Swiss, Malaysia all have late-production jets – the JAS 39E may replace the Swiss jets eventually, but you could still get a decade out of them. And as I understand it, RACR and SABR are (1) less expensive than APG-79/80 and (2) more importantly, easier to install and integrate.

Swiss Hornets are expected to fly until 2030.
I guess they can last considerably longer if required. During their first 10 years or so of service (1997-2008), the 33 strong fleet amassed 50’000 hours or a little more than 1500 hours per jet. Meaning the fleet should have plenty of hours left in 2013, the theoretical halfway point.

While it looks kinda cool, its also pretty fat. A lot of volume required for those CFTs/weapon bays which can’t be good for area ruling.
