And that is a very important capability. More so in times of sharply falling combat coded inventory when it’s a luxury not to have all tactical fastmover carrier capable.

    And then start NGAD/FAXX asap.

You have a point, but the USAF probably couldn’t care less.
Besides, carrier capability would be useless without trained pilots so this would require the air force to play Navy reserve squadrons. Isn’t that what the Marines are there for? 😀

On a somewhat related note, the EA-18G would actually be a practical reason to buy Super Hornets. But even then, some additional shared units would be cheaper.

Airforce would be betteroff buying F-18E/Fs!

    And why is that?
Isn’t it general consensus that the only thing the SHornet can do better than the awesome Eagle is land on a carrier?

    Pros:
    + better payload
    + better range
    + better kinematics
+ bigger nose, bigger airframe in general
+ already in air force inventory, and thus
    + already paid for
    + proven, robust platform
+ can be rebuilt indefinitely it seems…

    cons:
    – nose pointing ability
    – ???

Chicago to California is around 2500km. More if you want to land at the west coast.
The F-15, the fastest US fighter, will do about 2500km/h. But it can sustain this speed only for a couple of minutes. You would need several refuellings enroute plus added time for take-off, climb, acceleration and landing.

In short, it can’t be done.

Maybe your friend wants to write a science fiction novel? The cancelled F-108 would come close, but I don’t think it could do it in 1 hour.

    F-15 with F100-220 engine: 0.29 engine related class A mishaps/100k hours

Is the F-18E faster than an A-6E at sea level?

    Yes, it is.
Probably not with bombs, and this is in full afterburner at sea level so you’re out of fuel pretty quick.
This chart also puts into perspective the F-35: Mach 1.6 with 6 AAMs doesn’t seem so bad anymore.

What did the pre gaddafi roundel look like? Does anybody have anymore photos of free libyan air force aircraft ?

    see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_air_force#Markings

I also wonder why they didn’t use the old roundel. If they want the flag on their aircraft, there’s plenty of space f.e. on the vert. stabiliser. Like their new best buddies of the Turkish Air Force do it. 🙂

A recent article on the F-15C mentioned how they fight different fighters.

F-16C – fight using lower speeds
F-18C – fight in the high speed regime
F-18E/F – stay out its high nose pointing arcs.

Sounds interesting… which article would that be?

Sweet. When it says “top design” speed, would that mean it might be limited to a lower speed, say Mach 1.3 for example due to certain stealthy materials etc? Or is Mach 1.6 it’s operational top speed?

That remains to be seen… But the requirement is for Mach 1.6 so it should be its operational top speed. So obviously they would design the stealth coating to be able to withstand Mach 1.6 but who knows, its LM…
As SpudmanWP said, the true top speed is probably more than that.

So the F-35 is now officially a Mach 1.6 bird:

Ofcourse an UB has more drag vs singel version, my point was not a whole lot.
And from some view, the UB looks draggie due to the elevated cockpit, but i tell you, due to the breakup of the air vortices that feeds into the wings(blended wing/body design) And add the High(er) body lift. The Su-27UB Rocks.

Lets just forget about anything regarding ‘Top Speed’ here.
Cause fighters never go there anyway.
Lets stick in Subsonic as you say.
Granted, the two aircraft were to do the very same manuveres, The Flanker design has better aerodynamic turn n burn, IMO it loses less energy vs F-15 in lower speed regime.

But if you where to compair an F-15B vs Su-27UB, i’ll take the UB thank you very much.:)

We’re not comparing F-15 and Su-27, but the increase in drag caused by the second seat. And here it is very clear that the Su-27 to Su-27UB conversion adds much more compared to most if not any other fighter. The F-15 is just an example where you can see a slight performance decline.
But its a design choice, they wanted a trainer with good forward view for the guy in the back, thats what they got, but the price is drag.
And while top speed isn’t very important, it nicely illustrates the drag increase 😉

    Now, back to topic…
… will there be a J-20 two seater and will it have 360° view? 😮

Emil@, the Su-27UB, Su-30 two seaters have quite low drag for a two seater, this due to its exellent aerodynamic layout.

It might look draggie at first glance, but it is not the case.
Extra weight is more of an issue here..

    Are you sure?
From what I know, the stepped canopy adds quite a lot of drag and the Flanker two seaters have a top speed of “only” Mach 2 compared to the single seaters Mach 2.35.
In the subsonic area it doesn’t matter that much probably, but to say the Flanker two seaters are low drag isn’t correct.
The F-15B/D f.e. is also somewhat slower due to the reshaped canopy, but its only a very small penalty since its only a slight change in shape.

    F-35B carries about 7700 kg of JP-5/F-44

wiki says 14,003 lb (6,352 kg) which is about the same my memory says.

Excellent work, I especially like the F-15S 🙂

I’m not too familiar with the F100-220..
Can you see that on the nozzles?
Edit: never mind, i see it too, it looks a lot better with the new ones.

So what has been improved beside the nozzles?

Different engines. The Saudis decided to change engines on some of their 72 strong F-15S fleet. They ordered 65 General Electric F110-129 to replace PW F100-229 motors.
    F-15C/D uses the F100-220.

Is it just me, or does that X32 canopy look suspiciously like a Harrier one?

It is borrowed from a Harrier.
