It looks pretty small and thus somewhat affordable. Compared to the size of the UAV (both 1:10 scale) it looks Rafale sized. Might allow to power it with modified versions of existing engines. Combined with porting avionics, a reasonable cost and time frame seem possible.
I wonder though what the payload will be. At least a single 1000 kg bomb, cruise missile or ASMP missile along some AAMs would be the minimum requirement I guess. For that of course a layout with central weapons bay is well suited.

There is not enough space for twin racks on inner wing pylons. Unless interference with roll post jet blast is not an issue, or there is in fact enough space, I doubt either is the case. Even heavy single stores look like a very tight fit.
Not a big deal though for STOVL ops, but I wonder if the B will carry twin racks for conventional ops.
What pod is it on the forward right (Gun I guess) ? Is this picture recent and linked to a new configuration of use ? Strange unusual config…
It is carrying a 30mm gun pod plus PDLCT-S targeting pod. No idea about the gun pod designation. Edit: is it a CC-420 with the rear fairing removed?
The configuration itself is probably not what would be used operationally… just showcasing what is possible.
What about AASMs at the rear fuselage pylons, has or will that be cleared? That would allow 4x 250 kg PGMs, gun plus tageting pod.
And how would you have moved unflyable aircraft? Tow them to another state?

I am willing to bet that one of the reasons why they are not upgrading Blk1 SHs to Blk3 is that they found something in stress testing that will make it too expensive to fix in order to get to the new lifetime hours goal.
Or it is because Block 2 has seen airframe changes to accomodate AESA radars. Might simply not be worth the effort considering how long it takes and how worn out these airframes are. Building new Block 3 jets while upgrading Block 2 is probably the better idea.

The USAF seems to have successfully trained F-22 pilots using 1950s-designed T-38s. The Italians and Israelis have F-35 pilots coming up through the M-346, which by your reasoning must be impossible since it failed T-X.
Sure they have. But if the idea is to download as many hours as possible what with the lack of twin seaters, it’s best to go for the trainer with the best flight envelope. That is, with T-X they can stay on the trainer for longer, while with T-38, they have to change to F-22 at an earlier stage.
The M-346 is not a 70s design. Quite sure it has a larger flight envelope than T-50. Not sustained Gs, but carefree-handling, AoA-wise. And sustained Gs can always be simulated by descending.
It has nothing to do with ‘generations’ of trainers, all that fancy stuff is done in the simulator. A T-X of any type can’t emulate an F-22’s TVC, or an F-35’s sensor fusion.
Sure the avionics stuff is simulator based, on the plane or on the ground (in that regard T-X can emulate F-35’s sensor fusion).
But the fancy flying stuff is done in real life. And the Super Hornet trainer beats the Viper trainer in that area. Thankfully, Super Hornets weak supersonic performance doesn’t matter for a trainer.

Let’s face it, LM/KAI’s T-50 is a mini F-16, in other words a 4th gen jet. Who want’s to train 5th, 6th, possibly 7th gen fighter pilots in an F-16?

For the Su-57, there is no official specs, UAC site mentions them as “classified”. Wiki says 18.000 empty weight but this is probably previous to rework of the structure. Other sites mention 18.500 kg, paralay mentions 18.650 kg empty and 11.000 kg fuel. Any of available data claim lower weight and more fuel than the F-22
Yeah I know about the F-22s 19.7 tons. Thanks for clarifying that Su-57 numbers are just guesswork. It seems to me the numbers are heavily influenced by Su-35 data. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they turn out to be pretty optimistic aswell.

In comparison, Su-57 has more fuel capacity than F-22 (10300 vs 8200 kg), more internal space for weapons and same g-loading while having capacity to operate from rough runways and being substantially lighter (18500 vs 19700 kg).
Is there a reliable source for those figures? For example, the wiki page refers amongst others to an article in Combar Aircraft by Piotr Butowski, which says “estimated”.
Remember the F-22 was around 14.5 tons empty until it suddenly wasn’t.
As to the F-15 limit at Mach 2.5, note that the manual for the F-15C states that the aircraft is operationally limited to Mach 2.5. The implied maximum aerodynamic speed is Mach 2.6. And it’s with the older PW F100-220 engines. The latest 229s have about a 22% thrust increase, suggesting a 10% further increase in speed, so you can hit Mach 2.75.

This bodes not well for the use of twin racks on inner wing pylons I guess – if you want to carry 4 Meteors. The easy solution is not to carry Meteors on the forward fuselage stations.
