You seems to forget that the guy said he used ~ 30-40% of the thrust. If in these conditions, he still obliged the chase F 16 to use afterburner, it’s excellent. Anyway, I doubt that the chase plane has more than the center tank; in fact in attached picture (from this article you can see a clean F 16)

He said 30-40% of thrust is enough most of the time. He dint say 30-40% is enough to force the F-16 into burner. Those statements are not related.
Also, he probably was talking about total thrust, i.e. 60% is about max. dry thrust so 30-40% looks like a normal cruise setting.
None of what he said really reveals anything. Except maybe that the F-35 is no sitting duck which is what can be expected from a fighter.

If the F-35 didnt outrun an F-16 with external tanks, something would be very wrong.
More interesting would be to know how a clean F-16 compares.
It will without a doubt be the slowest less maneuverable new generation jet on the market. But then again, the only people who claim otherwise is F-35 fanatics on the web.

F-15’s FF was 1971. Hence battle experience from Vietnam was only partly included. Shortcomings really became apparent in the operation rolling thunder, but ~5 years is a bit short to develop a new aircraft from the scratch.
FF was in 1972 actually, at about the same time when F-4E with slatted wings appeared.
Technical proposals for the F-15 were released in 1969. So there was some influence (from early F-4 ops) that also lead to the F-4E.
Remember back then it didnt take several decades to design an aircraft. Damn computers. 😀
The K-8 isnt going to catch a fast bizjet. It isnt even in the league of advanced jet trainers like the Hawk and those are very poor interceptors and only usefull for point defence. Maybe the M-346 is a little better.
Something like the L-15 or the T-50 has the speed, but not the range. I remember a quote about the T-50 that it has just enough range to accelerate to Mach 1.5 and return to base. And the L-15 is even smaller so even less range.
But then again, the F-5 isnt much better, if any.
The Gripen looks like a good solution. I dont think any have been lost so far due to engine problems.
I’m sure the introduction of twin nosewheels demand completely different tactics and procedures. 😀
It seems to me the indigenous avionics would make a bigger difference.
Besides, the Indian AF hasnt operated the Su-27 before, so the Flanker series is as new to them as the EF is to the Brits, even if they had purchased some Su-27Ps.
It is not about saving money – it is about telling the Austrians that you (MoD Darabos) have saved money for buying the unpopular aircraft, which were ordered by the former government – after you have promised to chancel the deal before elections. No one is asking for the cost of future upgrades, shorter life cycle, earlier replacement, etc..

Basically, fifteen aircraft is not much, but it should be enough to allow a round the clock QRA, as long as the pilots stay happy! The main problem is going to be maintaining adequate flight hours for the pilots – training on someone else’s aircraft would really help things! Perhaps they could simply buy extra hours on German and Swiss air force aircraft (okay, it would be Swiss Hornets, but its still a modern fighter – hours are hours!).
No its not enough. 24 is enough. 18 would be enough with reduced lifespan. 15 is enough with reduced lifespan and business hour QRA duty only.
And what would be the point of saving money by reducing the fleet only to buy hours somewhere else?
OK it is all a bit of a fudge but we shouldn’t focus too much on the fact that they are getting Tranche 1 aircraft rather than tranche 2. In the end a fair amount of the differences between both tranches are software based. For the partner nations the plan was to upgrade the tranche 1 airframes to tranche 2 anyway, if the need arises for Austria to have full Tranche 2 capabilities I’m sure EADS can make a very attractive offer for the upgrade(actually I bet EADS expects this to happen in the end).
Yeah you can be sure EADS will make a very attractive offer. Not only for the upgrade to T2, but also for the missing equipment – whatever that consists of.

As you can see, production EF doesnt have a nose mounted pitot tube.
Here is a quesion that I do not have answer for: Is the pitot tube length part of the aircraft’s length? The drawing here is as part of the a/c length. Please let me know if this is not correct, I will rescale the aircrafts without the pitot tube lenghts.
I thought the Rafale had a shorter effective length; going by the above, the Rafale is actually longer then Typhoon from Nosecone to engine exhaust (ignoring pitot tube and tip of tail).

I think its without pitot tube as not every aircraft has it at the nose tip thus making comparison easier.
Also, you have used a pic of a very early EF with RB199 engines, with EJ200 the exhaust is further aft.

The Tomcats that are being scrapped now are the oldest airframes around which were mostly used as part source for the ones left in the fleet when they reduced from 2 to 1 F-14 squadron per carrier. Now that those are gone too, theres no reason to keep the cannibalized airframes any longer.
Still, many of the Bs and Ds are kept in long term storage.

It’s gone in slow & painful stages: first they decide to leave out the gun. Then they realise that means FCS changes, so come up with the ballast idea. Then they realise that means more (& UK-specific) testing, so revert to fitting the guns, but not using them. Now we’ve come full circle, having spent significant money & lots of management & technical effort to achieve exactly – nothing.
But you have learnt that fighters need guns.
Every now and then, we need to be reminded. 😀
It wasn’t the RAF, but the MoD. The RAF wanted the guns, & now it has them seems keen to use them, although IIRC the MoD eventually decided to fit the guns, but not fund ammunition or training for them.
Didnt recent experience in Afghanistan convince the MoD to fund ammo and training? I must have read that somewhere…
The only problem with this story is, the German MoD is not informed about this “gift”. The spokesman of the German MoD, Peer Eickenboom denied that there is an agreement about this.
I see, I heard about that today… Funny, mabye the revised contract is not even valid and the AAF will get its 18 Typhoons afterall.
What version of the Amraam? I’m guessing it would be the B ver as an initial learning tool and since it’d be less politically sensitive?
