Why is such a modern multi-role aircraft not in Afghanistan providing CAS to British forces? The nine units in the pictures would be a start.

    Sauron

The UK MOD probably thinks the Sidewinder is not a suitable weapon for CAS duties. They obviously have no idea.

The F-15C aircraft was strenght limited to 7.3G and the HUD tape recorder might be out of sync by reaching 9G already.

F-15 was limited to 7.33gs early which was later increased to 9gs for all models.
And since its not fly by wire controlled, i guess some funny things are possible.

    Very impressive. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Unfortunately, I cant read the F-16 serial. If you know the serials of the planes, you can search for pics or tell the exact engine model.

0460 and 1259…is there some secret sense to their numbering system that I’m missing?

Its done the Russian way to give USAF analysts a headache. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I doubt this plane can catch an airliner. Range, speed and payload will be very limited. Loaded with external stores and avionics, I even doubt if flight performance will be noteworthy better than that of a PC-21. At least the PC-21 has some endurance.

    F3 IS on track.

Technically yes, but no firm orders yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Rafale however, badly needs an upgrade to the F3 standard if it wants to pretend to be toe-on-toe with the EF.

Its more the other way round. Current EFs are A/A only, whereas Rafales in service with AdlA are F2 standard with some A/G capabilities. Tranche 3 is still not secured and defined (though I’m sure it will happen), F3 is more on track.

The caption says this is an R-Darter being fired from an upgraded F-5EM.

If so it looks an awful lot like the Derby in my opinion……

It looks like ps to me…

The other factor in this is that any of the WVR [Apart from AMRAAM] missiles shot at them were Mike model Sidewinders. Which by everyones current definitions would be known as a last generation weapon.

I think those were all AMRAAM missiles. I dont think A/B AMRAAMs are anywhere in the same league as modern IIR missiles reg. turning capabilities so yes, this doesnt say much about chances against ASRAAM and the like.

Between the Eurofighter and the Rafale (both at current order level) lies the level, which you should have to get a little reward. Though technically comparable, the Rafale is an industrial nightmare so far. An extremely expensive marvel. The Eurofighter is moderately expensive marvel, the F-22 is the most expensive marvel ever.

First time i hear that too. The Rafale is not more expensive than EF. Actually, this rather indicates an industrial or political nightmare on EF side if you ask me.
Remember Jรคger 90? To be honest though, only the Gripen is more or less on track with service entry a decade ago.

That is the reason why I suggested to google for International Standard Atmosphere. The start of the layer of constant temperature is called tropopause. The tropopause begins between 8 and 18km height, depending on … guess … the temperature.

Thanks for the info, now I even found it on google. ๐Ÿ™‚

btw, back during the Singapore contest, EF managed to show its supercruising capabilites, while Rafale did not…

Yes, but there’s a shortage of secondhand Mirage 2000.

True, but in a few years, more will be available. And I’m sure Dassault will offer a decent package with Rafales and secondhand Mirages if Brazil can wait.

    Some food for thought…

    The Portuguese government has expressed the desire to sell 20 of the currently held F-16s after MLU;
    The MLU is to be performed by OGMA;
OGMA is nowadays essencialy owned by Embraer.

You may see Vipers in the FAB future yet… we’ll see…

Whats the idea behind upgrading Vipers and retire them afterwards?

I think Brazil would rather opt for more Mirage 2000 than introducing another second hand single engined short range type.

Also most pictures of Rafale, you can see it hauling fuel tanks so damn large – so what then is this benefit of signature reduction features? And what is the benefit of its small size. There is limited use to this.

It carries them because it can while EF cant. :p
Rafale has more range on internal fuel alone, its larger fuel tanks adding to that advantage. For comparison with EF, just leave the tanks at home.

Another great aeronautic remark: each degree less on the ground continues to be less if you go up the atmosphere (disregarding cold air streams etc).
I suggest googling for “International Standard Atmosphere”.
The temperature corrections on performance charts of fighter jets is for real. I suggest to take a look on one of those, too.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but at typical supercruise altitude of 40-50’000 feet, temperature is constant isnt it.
At zero feet, while standing on the ramp, temperature and supercruise performance doesnt matter though.
