I bet MT-Propeller will provide new blades quite fast. Another example why wooden (composite) props are not the worst choice. Even if the engine were running, damage to engine parts are minimal. Have a look at the French Yak 3 crash. I bet that engine has a lot of damage in comparison. Metal props do have their disadvantages…..

It was not this one, this is the G-4, Red 7 formerly with MAC at Albstadt. The one Mark flew was the formerly Dittes one, ex Black 2, now Yellow 3. (D-FDME, the G-4 is D-FWME) You can see the difference quite easy, the G-10 has a high (er) tailwheel. G-10 is waiting for her engine, G-6 FMBB (D-FMBB) waiting for main overhaul. So there are 3 in the shop at the moment….

MJ772 D-FMKN is not and never was owned by Meiermotors. It was there for overhaul / repair for getting airworthy after purchase. It is owned by AirFighter Academy Heringsdorf (Island of Usedom), Germany.

It`s a shame. Now there is none of the 3 109`s of Messerschmitt-Stiftung / EADS airworthy. Red 7, D-FWME was the only one airworthy for a while, Yellow 3 (formerly Black 2) (D-FDME) having engine problems, and FMBB (D-FMBB) is in main overhaul for a while. Not a good day for Messerschmitt-Stiftung. Pilot seems to have been Klaus Plasa, if I ID ed him correctly (seen on the video).

I found 3 battles mentioned in “Luftkampf zwischen Sand und Sonne” , German edition of Christopher Shores / Hans Ring: “Fighters over the Desert” on the 7th December 1941. First was quite early, before 07.00, second one after 10.00, the third about 1 hour later, take off in Tobruk. I believe you are interested in the 3rd one. Involved was 274. Sqn. (SAAF). West of El Adem they found 15 Ju 87, 6 Bf 109, and 12 Italian fighters of all types. The 109´s flew high cover, diving for shots and going up again. The Italians seemed to be trained tactically far worse. 2 Macchi MC 202 were shot down by Sqn.Ldr. Linnard and PO Keefer, 2 more probable ones by Sqn.Ldr. Linnard and PO Weeks. PO Moriarty shot down one Ju 87 and one Fiat G-50, Sgt. Parbury destroying a downed Ju 87. 3 Hurricanes were shot down, (FL Hobbs, PO Sutton, PO Gains) by 3 Bf 109. Pilots were Lt. Marseille, Ofw. Espenlaub, Uffz. Grimm. There is no mention of any loss of a Bf-109 during this battle. Maybe the Italian Macchi MC 202 were mistakenly recognised as 109`s? But there is a mention of the loss of 2 Bf-109 during the earlier battle (10.00 onwards. The authors presume that these 2 109`s were Italian ones. (1 MC 202, 2 Bf-109, one damaged Fiat G-50), allied unit was 1.SAAF Sqn.

I see by the TFC no official announcement, so does anyone know what’s happening, maybe a visit to the US as part of the deal that brought princess over here or is it a permanent move. Now that Mr Grey is taking a step back does this mean a draw down of his aircraft as happened when the late great Ray Hanna stopped, I hope not as the UK skies will be a poorer place without his wonderful aircraft. I have noticed that Platinum fighters have a few new aircraft for sale including a 109 E and a 190 D-9 what chance one of those arriving at Duxford in place of Snafu.
As always gents great pictures keep up the good work.
I doubt the 190 D-9 will go to Duxford in place of SNAFU. This is a strictly static a/c, I seriously doubt it can be made airworthy, if you do not want to throw 90 % of it in the bin. Maybe even more. I do not think it would make any sense at all. To take some original parts and scratch-build an airworthy one would make more sense. But that is of course only my personal view of it.
Thanks to the usual suspects for the brilliant photos. I always get the feeling as if I were there (at least nearly. Maybe in future not only pictures, videos and sounds can be transmitted via internet, smells would be nice to get an even more realistic touch. I especially like the big radials being started…. ).

Shame that the 109 cant fly in the UK !
Steve”P”
Why not? :stupid: You just could say, they did fly over Britain perfectly well in 1940, if not shot at….. :highly_amused:
Michael
Nice one. 😎 If anyone has very deep pockets….

P.S.: Will it be at Legends 2014?
@ Graham Boak;- ‘They had fuel injection but we had superior superchargers – and turbochargers if you include the US. Their engines were a third bigger to give the same power.’
Not wishing to be a pedant, but my understanding is that the Jerries used larger engines as they were using low-octane fuel made from coal for the most part, not really having any oil. They were however, using water-methanol injection and their Commandgerrat (Sp..?) engine management sytem was light years ahead of our fist-full of levers. HOTAS years before FADEC and HOTAS were dreampt-up.
@Snoopy7422: Spelling is: “Kommandogerät”, or, if no “ä” is available spelling would be correctly: “Kommandogeraet”. (quite usual for ä – ae, ö – oe, ü – ue)
My personal opinion is, that you can not generalise. I would not say, that Germans were generally better at making aircraft, nor the British. You just can not answer this question if you want to regard every aspect necessary. There were pros and cons. Some things were better, some not. I do not know if it would have been “better” to stay with a only a few proven types like the 109, 190 and Ju 88. But there were some quite interesting and ingenious solutions which gave input to post war aircraft.
Michael
Thank you for providing us with this brilliant thread. Only by comparing the wartime pictures with the ones you took recently one can imagine how it really has been in 1945. Thanks again for posting the pictures, and your effort to do so.

Any update available on this stunning project?
