Eight-Blade An-24
Eight-blade propellers tested on an An-24.
WB-57
Decidedly grotesque Martin WB-57, assigned by the USAF to NASA for Project Airstream, taking air samples to test for nuclear radiation. Howard AFB, Panama Canal Zone, 1977.
Filipino Cali Super Pinto
A Filipino PAF T-610 Cali, developed from the AJI Super Pinto COIN demonstrator aircraft, which was itself derived from the Temco Model 51 trainer. The Super Pinto did not attract orders from the U.S. Air Force after its COIN trials in 1971, and lay dormant until the prototype was purchased by the Philippine air force Self-Reliant Development Wing. It was intended to help build up an indigenous Filipino aircraft manufacturing capability, but nothing further came of it.
Low-Visibility Starlifter
A C-141A Starlifter in trial low visibility colors, tested on this single example in December of 1977. This was obviously not adopted as a standard color scheme.
Bulldog and Skyvan
They need to expand the rating system from five stars to ten for this thread, as far as I’m concerned. A Malaysian BAe Bulldog, three beautiful Indonesian Skyvans, and another gorgeous Skyvan from Singapore, in similar colors, and in markings from the mid- to late-70s. You could almost mistake the last one for a Peruvian or a Turkish plane at first glance, couldn’t you…
SAE?
I just noticed that the Ecuadorian Arava in the picture I just submitted is marked “SAE,” not “FAE.” Does anybody know what “SAE” refers to?
FAE Arava Israeli Call-Signs
I imagine the FAE Arava could have been on a shake-down flight prior to delivery to Ecuador. I submitted an image earlier of a couple of Britten-Norman Islanders from Ghana that still had their UK call-signs, as well. Not sure if they kept them on the aircraft when they were in service. Does anybody know of any instances of this sort of thing?
Arava From Ecuador
An Arava of the Fuerza Aerea Ecuatoriana. By the way, I believe the turbo C-47 is a Basler conversion. Several countries have used it, including South Africa.
Additional Photos
Two Islanders from Ghana, and a Sudanese BAC 145 in pre-1969 markings.
Heavy with child
Some men are attracted to pregnant aircraft. Aero Spacelines Guppy, SATIC Beluga…
They just don’t make ’em like they used to
Well, the Intruder, the Prowler, and the Aardvark immediately come to my mind, but I think they just don’t make nearly as many really, really ugly aircraft as they used to. The Blohm und Voss Bv.141 asymmetric aircraft is a perfect example. And how about this one- the Blackburn Blackburn…
Albanian Air Force Plans
I heard that the Albanians plan to follow the same model the Romanians used with their Mig-21s/Lancers, and have the Israelis upgrade any MiG-15s, Shenyang F-6s, Shenyang F-4s, and Il-28s they can dig out of the scrap heap or mothballs… 🙂
Army Skyknight
Douglas F10-B Skyknight, transferred to the U.S. Army for use as a test bed. Technically, it did serve in these markings, but it’s an oddity I thought belonged here nonetheless. I’m stunned by this thread and the two Small Airforces Pics threads. Never before have I seen such a spectacular collection of photos.
More Photos
Guyana Defense Forces Britten-Norman Islander, Rwanda Britten-Norman Islander. Does anybody have anything from Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, or Equatorial Guinea? By the way, the Somalis have been doing a great maintenance job on their aircraft since the warlords took over, haven’t they…
What a thread!!!
By the way, this is an absolutely INCREDIBLE thread. I have been searching for something like this for a long, long time, small air force freak that I have been since the paleolithic period or thereabouts. Please, let’s keep it going!!!
