    Hello again,
Work is progressing to erect the memorial to the crew of Lancaster PB565 at the crash site near Owston Ferry, North Lincs.

At the time of the crash, most of the visible wreckage was taken away by the RAF Recovery Team but the starboard outer engine was not recovered from the riverbed into which it fell. It was pulled out in the mid 80’s by a group of local people and went to a small museum or collection at Nostell Priory.

When that closed the collection including this engine went to the museum at Firbeck, South Yorks. When that closed, most of the artefacts came to the Aeroventure Museum in Doncaster but it seems that ‘our’ engine went into the collection of Ken Ward.

Can anyone help me with what happened next or where it might be now? Is Mr Ward still around? Was his collection dispersed?

We would dearly like a photo of this engine and to know where it might be now.

To be fair to everyone, please don’t post personal information on here but if anyone could PM me with a potential lead on this engine, the people working to fund and place this memorial would be most grateful. I have the engine serial number and would be happy to verify my own credentials as a legitimate enquirer with anyone who has any info.

    regards,
    stu knowles

Hello Dennis, Thank you for the comments. I thought crankcase / block parts but didn’t know if they were painted black on the outside. Do you think that the camshaft is of a size similar to that of a Merlin? I thought that it was a bit small but I have not seen the real thing. I was hoping that someone might recognise the solenoid thing too.

    Thanks for looking in

Mine was £10 or £12 although slightly devalued by having the hole on each blade. – now plugged with a bit of teak to match.

I take it from the lack of responses that no-one knows the original purpose?

I can’t help you with the ID of the prop you have but this one seems to be a pair to it. I thought probably some sort of wind powered generator prop myself. I bought mine back in the 80’s in a junk shop in Berwick upon Tweed. The blades had been drilled and a lamp holder (240volt) fitted to make some sort of light fitting.

I don’t know if you can make out the detail but there a few more ID numbers on mine
    regards

Thanks everyone, some good information there. Lanc35, that information seems most relevant to the situation under discussion.

The event under discussion is summarised here;-

    http://aircrewremembered.com/speed-howard.html

Towards the bottom of the page there is a suggestion that relatives of the crew are out there and have been doing their own research. I believe that the owner of that web site has some contact details and has promised to pass info on as my own project progresses.
I also understand that some form of excavation of the site took place in the 80’s and I’m working on finding out more from that quarter.

The objective is that have something in place and a service of dedication on 15/4/2020, 75 years after the event

My thanks to those who have responded.

The actual phrase used in the report is ‘ to No 36 frame ‘ -Frame or former I think that we are talking about the same thing.

Marka 1967, any idea where you read that?

My point being that from the initial photo we can have no idea if we are looking at case from the smallest round in your pic or the biggest or something bigger altogether. As has been pointed out, a pic of the cartidge base would help or one alongside a ruler. It just seemed to me that all the speculation in the thread was pretty pointless until the cases were properly identified. – Which is not that hard given easily obtainable information.
