the Volga–Don Canal provides the most direct navigable connection between the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Azov (and hence Black Sea)

Yes I know. Speaking of Caspian Sea and Canals reminded me of recent news which haven’t been posted here.

Tatarstan, Russia based Zelenodolsk Shipyard named after Maxim Gorky today November 6 2014 held a launching ceremony for TPD Sviyaga, a floating transport dock, the shipbuilding company said in a press release.

TPD “Sviyaga” designed by St.Petersburg based Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau is a special-purpose ship. The vessel is intended for transportation of ships and to perform dock inspection of hulls. The Sviyaga will provide repair and maintenance of ships of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet. The floating dock will be transporting ships on inland waterways from north to south.

Now submarines, without heading into the open ocean, can travel within the country from the White Sea to the Baltic Sea, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and from there on to the Caspian Sea. This naturally increases the Russian Navy’s mobility.

It would be pretty interesting to see a couple Ladas in the Caspian Sea in the future but I doubt that will happen anytime soon since there is no need for subs and the northern part of Caspian Sea is very shallow. But things might change of course. The middle and the Southern parts of Caspian sea would suit very well for subs since the sea is deep or very deep there.

In short, Iran has increased its caspian fleet with a 1400 ton corvette, 250 ton missile boats, mini-subs.

Yes I knew about the situation between ex-Soviet countries and Iran but a couple of new iranian ships should not mean much for Russia. Especially when Russia also has Bal missile system in the area and an easy way to bring more ships from the Black Sea if needed. But maybe the situation in the Caspian Sea is more volatile than most people think of and that is why Russia has strengthened it’s Caspian flotilla.

3rd project 21631 ship will join the navy tomorrow.

Do not really know why Russia is planning to build so many of these ships to the Caspian sea because these ships would be very useful in the Baltic sea and also in the Black sea. It is always a good thing to be prepared but why build so many ships to the Caspian sea when Russia could bring more ships from the black sea to the Caspian sea if needed.

India’s quest for a secure seaborne nuclear deterrent is set for a giant stride when its first indigenously constructed nuclear submarine the INS Arihant begins sea trials next week.

Naval sources indicated a casting-off date of Monday, December 15, and preparations are currently underway at the Shipbuilding Centre, Visakhapatnam to ensure a smooth sail out for the 6,000-tonne nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).

“It will be a surfaced sortie, but a great milestone nevertheless,” naval officials told India Today.

Greek government has given the green light for the Hellenic Navy to sell its four Russian-built Zubr landing ships to China, Hong Kong newspaper reported.

Only a rumour, most likely BS. I am sure that Greece would be very interested in selling but I doubt that China is interested in buying used ships.
