I hope someone can help
Here’s a photo of one of the Buccs departing from Cranfield. my memory of that day is a well known friend cutting a couple of twigs from the hedge to get a clear shot!
Vickers Valiant
XD816 was struck of charge 26/8/70 and was broken up at Abingdon. Six nose sections survived with ATC squadrons. I recall seeing the nose of 816 in store at the ‘pickle factory’ Henlow. Henlow is an all grass airfield and in some ways would have possibly been a better site for the RAF Museum.
Vickers Valiant XD818
The Valiant was roaded in. A close friend of mine was a navigator onboard 818 when they had a possible engine fire 150 out over the sea!
As an aside, I photographed the last Valiant to fly when it flew in to Abingdon in 1968 for the RAF 50th Anniversary review.
that RAF Abingdon open day in 1968
The Lincoln is at Cosford, the Tempest is hanging in the Milestones of flight hall at Hendon and the Beufighter went to Canada. I think I was impressed with the Wellington and Mosquito outside – to see all those a/c brought together – a sight unlikely to be repeated!
That RAF Abingdon openday in 1968
Some very nice photos. It was somewhat more than an open day, Her Majesty being there on the Friday. ( she declined to have the Lightning display!) I recall seeing the last Valiant land as well as a Beverly flown back from Bicester where they were awaiting scrapping. Flying rehearsals took place on the afternoons of that week. Attached is a photo of the Gunbus replica that I took during the week.
1 engined Lanc
Thanks DHfan – I took my photo at Booker in 69/70 ? No autofocus or auto wind on in those days and metering was semi auto – the result is a sharp but under exposed shot.
1 engined Lanc
Sycamore, thanks for your input. I agree. The word from my Nav friend just now was that ‘all their eggs were in one basket’! The opposite engine was always unfeathered first, very gently at first to get the prop windmilling, being well aware of possible problems from the CSU. As he said, at the same time the other two engines were proceding as well, the
flight engineer being like the proverbial one armed paper hanger.
Moving on, I have somewhere a slide of Pat Fillingham flying the Mossie at Booker on one engine. Does anyone else have a photo?
1 engined Lanc
Sorry, Papa Lima – the Lincoln was RE411 of 49 Sqdn, the place – Newton, on 18th Sept 1953.
Apparently the run was started with all engines at full chat before feathering all but one outer. At the end of the run the opposite outer was unfeathered first to counter any swing, and then nos 2 and 3.
1 engined Lancs
Papa Lima is correct – my father flew in a Lancaster at a post war display when three engines were feathered for a pass along the crowd line. Living three doors from me is an ex Lincoln navigator – he flew in a Lincoln that made a pass on one engine.
Hampden Sqdn lineshoots No3
I was passed an original squadron line book many years ago. It sat on a shelf
until, having seen people share items on this forum, I decided to see what the reaction would be if a few lineshoots were posted. As Robbo said, it gives a feel of the time – personalities on a squadron etc.

Adrian – Its a long tome since I used a Brownie box camera. My first efforts
using one were at the 1960 Battle of Britain display at Valley – no ropes or barriers –
a Valiant, Anson, Navy Syraider, Seahawks etc. I’ put up a Spitfire photo next week, taken with the camera.
Get in touch when you next go to Old Warden

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately it’s the only photo I have from This source. Dempster Jone died back in the eighties – a super chap , brilliant artist as well. Pembroke Dock is in South Wales and opened in 1930.The base closed when Sunderlands were withdrawn from service in 1957. I recall my father talking about a flight from there during the war – he sat in the front turret!
