Denmark’s top guns trump RAF in Libya

Denmark’s top guns trump RAF in Libya

Denmark’s armed forces have had almost as much success in Libya as the RAF and the Royal Navy, The Times can reveal. A strike force of four Danish jets has hit almost as many targets in Libya as all of Britain’s much larger contingent of warplanes and ships.

Barely a week after Admiral Lord West of Spithead, a former First Sea Lord, said government cuts could leave Britain looking like “bloody Denmark”, a senior Danish pilot described his role in a campaign that, according to defence sources, had the country’s F16 jets fly up to eight combat sorties per day — easily one of the highest rates of the Nato-led coalition.

“At the beginning you really did not know what to expect,” said the Danish pilot, call-sign MIR. “Every time you see the Libyan coastline you know that you are getting close to a threat and you start to be a lot more alert.”

Denmark was one of the first countries to take part in the UN-mandated operation against the Gaddafi regime. The nation also has more than 700 soldiers deployed alongside British troops in Afghanistan, and fought in the Iraq war.

Denmark’s six F16 jets — two are kept in reserve — have hit 913 targets since the campaign began in March. Britain’s 16 Tornado jets, four Typhoon fighters and a unit of Apache attack helicopters, as well as at least two Royal Navy warships, hit 970.

Lord West, a security minister in the previous Government, was forced to apologise after he told a press conference last week that Britain was still a first-rate military power, “not like bloody Denmark or Belgium”.

-Norway’s F-16s have accounted for at least 12 percent of the bombs that were dropped in Libya so far. That is around 130 bombs.

In the same time the danish F-16s has dropped 239 bombs (curently 267 (23/4))

    +1.

Tango’s news thread is usually the best bit of the forum.

Link, title & a brief summary is all that’s allowable for articles, but press releases & publicity pictures put out by manufacturers can be posted in full, as they’re published with explicit permission to reproduce freely. The manufacturers want you to spread them around.

    Please carry on, Tango.

The T bird got painted by our French hosts, whilst we were at a party on the night before we were due to leave, in retaliation for a Zap I did on a Mirage. The boogers used a quick drying house paint and then towed it to a carpark in the middle of the camp at Dijon. The problem snowballed when our younger pilots were falling over themselves to fly it back to UK. To compound the problem some of our guys back at Wittering decided to have a Guard of Honour with berets on backwards and shouldering arms with french bagettes. The Group Captain had a sense of humour failure so it all ended with all ranks using scrubbing brushes and buckets of Teepol when our Herc arrived back some hours later. It certainly stood out at the front of the Vic.

Yes the Sharkmouth was in Belize but only for 3 days as another senior officer had another sense of humour failure..

Perhaps this is the right place to remind everyone that here at the Aeroseum Gothenburg is probably the only place in the world where you can climb into the cockpits of a Viggen and a Draken. I must confess that I am a guide in the Aeroseum, and a PM to me could well result in a personal guided tour.

Except for “Teknisk museum” in Helsingoere, Denmark. And a lot of other places in Denmark. In Roskilde one is used as a simulator (the whole plane moves when u use it).

Am I the only one who thinks that its a crying shame, that they are hideing the real H-229, instead of putting it on display?
