There are simple solutions to printer cartidges

    Hi Kabir

Unfortunately the authorities can’t envisage or foresee everything a ‘sick’ mind of a terrorist will conceive to use to secrete explosives or timing devices.

After all who thought anyone would use shoes, liquid in bottles, and many other common items used by terrorists in the past to secrete explosives.

Very ‘sick’ minds manage to do so and the authorities haven’t got many of these ‘sick’ minds working for them to identify which of the most common consumer items can be used for secreting explosives.

It may seem like knee jerk reaction but can it be helped?
Can anyone conceive of a see all, reveal all machine and if there was, how long would it take to build and the cost would cripple most airport authorities?

Especially manufacturers of the larger laser printer toner cartidges can alter their packing material to be clear blister pack with hologram and RFID identifiers rather than using as at present purely cardboard outer packing.

Security screening devices can possibly be easier tuned as can staff be trained to recognise tampered with blister packs than travellers cursing the fact that they have now to be checked if carrying toner cartridges/banned from carry on luggage alltogether.

Also I am unsure how many bona fide passengers carry toner cartidges with them as in most internet/cyber cafes and hotels there are printers of reasonable to high quality.

My message ‘sod’ the inconveniences fly, fly, fly and sort these crazies out, by being as defiant as they are and not cave into paranoia and fear they try to instill into the developed/developing worlds.

Air travel is still the safest and must remain so.

Would bringing back the death penalty in all countries for abject terrorism be an answer ? Probably not as these fanatics believe that by being a martyr to the cause they guarantee a place in heaven. Therefore by putting them to death as a punishment for the crimes thay have committed they are facilitated in reaching their ‘heaven’.

It’s completely sickening to see it start all over again

It’s completely sickening to see all this crap start all over again.

It costs/takes lives (innocent ones, passengers, crew), causes so much economic hardship and what comes out of all of it?

Zilch! apart from often unwarranted paranoia against anyone that may be of a minority appearance.

In this economic recession there is no place for terrorism and the only way to combat it is to fly, fly, fly even though the security checks may wear one down.

It is the only way to show terrorists that they will never, never win.

May God bless all of you that fly as crew and hope that you will all be safe as you travel far more air miles than us passengers.

There are modern teaching resources for constantly changing technology

There are modern teaching resources for constantly changing technology.

Therefore the argument that the person that spends more time in the classroom not being as good as ‘the hands on’ person is no longer always the case.

Many years ago both while technology was slower to advance and teaching/learning resources were primarily classroom based the argument may have been true, namely that the ‘hands on’ person was better than someone spending time away in a classroom. This also becomes the case when the ‘chips are down’ – e.g. a real theatre of war.

Now with virtual classrooms, multimedia, AV, special group forums, confidential chat rooms, video conferencing, web cam links, etc the classroom is in many cases virtual (especially useful for persons based in remote locations).

My point is that an engineer or anyone for that matter must take responsibility for advancing their own professional skills (in some quarters this is termed CPD) and in many cases where relevant employers will or should be encouraged to pay or part pay.

Yet at the end of the day it is finally – can you get your hands dirty and keep the business/operation going ?
If you cannot then the learning has come to nought.

In this flagging economy R&D and Manufacturing may be the EU’s only saviours

Personally I would prefer the European governments to finance development and sales of our manufactured products even if it means our traditional flag carriers are hard done by. Manufacturing will always have more importance than service industry to me and I work in the aerospace service industry.

In this flagging economy R&D and Manufacturing may be the EU’s only saviours
More power to the elbow of R&D and manufacturing even if it means government subsidies or grants.
Emirates and other major airlines are ‘big boys’ and can take care of themselves.

I think a chopper in to Lukla will be my choice if I ever make Base Camp

My ambition is to go to Base Camp at the foot of Mt Everest.
Even with all the advances humanity has made, in my opinion to stand at the foot of Mt. Everest and simply gaze in awe is a humbling reality that nature is still master of the earth and it’s atmosphere.
After seeing the video footage (thanks Ch 5 and Culpano) I think I shall opt for a chopper from Kathmandu in to Lukla.

The logo is the only thing sensible

It looks a bit pathetic and almost a big stint on cost of full livery. Yuk.
At least the logo is intact.

In the main people who other airlines are better off without

Who are all these people that fly on Ryanair and keep them in business? Masochists? Or can they not afford to fly on other airlines? Or is there a shortage of available seats on other airlines?

Scotland gets a fair share of the global LCA passengers on RyanAir. Looking for a boozalot weekend while gambling on the way and back

Why get so het up ?

Maybe this forum would not be so quiet if all you guys were maybe just a little bit more friendly.I have to say this forum is so good at smart alec answers members who join soon leave or dont post .Have a think about it guys and grey area i have reported you more than once and has a moderator you should not encourage it or join in .With that i will close the door on the way out and the way the forum is going it wont be long before its closed for good .

    neil

    Neil
    Why close the forum?
Grey Area (as a human being) can say what he likes and he knows if he oversteps the limits he will be advised by his fellow moderators.
In this case there are issues in the initial post that may be derogatory to a pilot who executed a fairly routine procedure given the set of circumstances at a possibly very busy airport.
That does not make him a bad pilot or warrant insults.
If there was anything out of the ordinary that breached safety either by the ATC or the pilot, records will clearly show, and incident reports will have been filed if there were breaches in safety.
In this case everyone on board were safe and the aircraft intact.
So why be concerned about a moderator wearing in this case both hats, remarking on the inflamatory initial words used?

Grey Area and Deano are right in principle

    Agreed, Deano. 🙂

Anyone who really thinks they’re going to get the full airline service (both on and off the aircraft) for £1 each way needs to take a good look at themselves rather than at Ryanair.

Grey Area and Deano are right in principle yet RyanAir take budget airline treatment of passengers to the limit often expecting outside authorities (non RyanAir) to shoulder responsibility (e.g. Prestwick and Strathclyde Police having to fund water for passengers….).
RyanAir must build into their budgets contingency planning which includes these sorts of unforseen problems.
Being a European LCA they must adhere to basic human courtesies which certainly will be basic in comparison to full fare paying passengers on other airlines.
Customer service does not cost that much, a smile, an apology, an explanation, etc don’t make the cost of flying at £1 any higher.
Possibly the overworking of staff (stress – hidden possibly) is why these basic human courtesies get overlooked.
I personally know two Stewardesses who describe the horrendous way RyanAir treated them with regards stopovers, transfer to hotels (flea pits), etc
Human nature being such these young persons (although they shouldn’t possibly take it out on being sullen and customer unfriendly) don’t give their best.
I respect completely what Deano and Grey Area have said.

My policy is never fly on RyanAir – it is the best criticism of it

The thing is, Ryanair are indeed the most hated airline. And just about everything they do is pikey at best. Having done two flights (Forced because of work budgets) I will never fly with them willingly again.
Only two flights yes, but 1 year apart and to different destinations. Very cheap, but I felt ripped off on behalf of my Company.

My policy is never fly on RyanAir – it is the best criticism of it and MO’L.

RyanAir fought (tooth and nail) Skyscanner a bunch of clever Edinburgh web programmers who provided a service to budget travellers by ‘auto-scraping’ all budget airline websites for the best immediate deals.
In my opinion there may be technical errors in the way this new website “I Hate RyanAir” operated but they did not need silenced completely by RyanAir.

RyanAir constantly seeks stupid nonsensical journalistic publicity but is not ‘man’ enough to face public criticism for their appalling attitude to customers in general.

Even during a recession the travelling public do NOT become cattle (or should I say horse – MO’L horse racing) fodder to be treated the way RyanAir treat them

Then it’s more accolades to the photographer

Thanks everyone for your comments …. Jay, there is no trickery in the photos, I assume you refer to the water “corkscrew” this often happens in heavy rain situations, particularly at high speed, always looks better from the side, sorry have no examples to show, but maybe someone else could provide a sample ??

    Keith.

    Keith

Thanks for the explanation and it makes an even better pic since you have captured something I did not know was so picturesque.

More accolades for the excellent pics in that case.

    Keep up the excellent work.

    Deano and Keith,

Will one of you please satisfy my curiosity and tell me if it’s purely camera chicanery in the penultimate pic?

Excellently entertaining and professional flying and photography.

Last few years – always 11 Reds

    11 Reds? 😮

I thought they had ten, Reds 1-9 and a single reserve aircraft, I didn’t realise they had two reserves.

At RAF Leuchars in the last few years and at Farnborough 2008 and 2010 there have been two reserve Hawks.

At RAF Leuchars on two occasions having met the entire crew and the two reserves (trainees for the forward year usually) they always have had 11 reds.

At RAF Leuchars 2010 the 11 reds were –
    XX266, XX294, XX308, XX242, XX306, XX227, XX322, XX179, XX260, XX237 and XX177
