I am sure not so long ago I have seen some Police Boxes with sirens
I am sure not so long ago I have seen some Police Boxes with sirens in and around Edinburgh.
Whether they operate or not or whether they are still in place I will only know after a comprehensive recce.
Here are some pics URLs albeit the first is 1960s

That box may have been moved to http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_a_o/0_around_edinburgh_-_tollcross_police_box_034560_zoom-in.htm
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl Pan this location with search word Tollcross in Street View
Here are a few more recent ones but the sirens aren’t visible. http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_my_p_0/0_my_photographs_0_edinburgh_police_boxes.htm

Interesting – no comments from anyone – and I do not imply a thanks for posting
Interesting – no comments from anyone – and I do not imply a thanks for posting to me.
I’d hoped someone would say / question –
– is it genuine (I don’t know either but those skilled in some of the AV tecniques will be able to tell)
– what about the huge visible lighted regions (any scream from any energy saving buffs)
– still on the lighted areas – surely that tells other inhabitants of the universe where there are humans and no humans – which ever way they wish to know
– apart from oceans what about the other less inhabited areas (are they truly unfit for man – maybe)
– do we need underwater cities (has been mooted)
– and so on
IMO when expense such has gone into getting such material (if genuine (and not akin to “Capricorn One” the movie) together we humans should get something out of it as it is claiming to be the ultimate mirror on all of us mere earthlings. It is an audit of humanity/earth that we all should be having some interest in and learning from.
It does if genuine also justify space exploration – going to Mars and further in the future. If it means we use the information to increase everyone’s awareness of themselves.
I like doing a mental audit frequently (daily while I sculled on the Thames) as that’s really what learning is about and trying to avoid repeating one’s errors, at work, in life and of course in sculling techniques:).

Thanks David – I saw it via a BBC URL too
Thanks David – I saw it via a BBC URL too.
There will be an explanation why only 7 Reds were in the flypast which as yet the public haven’t been made aware of.
To my knowledge it was always going to be a “Missing Man” formation fly past but that would still mean 8 aircraft not 7.
This report also from the BBC has the following in paragraphs 4 & 5 but no explanation http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-14963484
“….The runners watched as the Red Arrows flew over the start line and later over the Tyne Bridge.
They flew over the bridge in the “missing man” formation in memory of Flt Lt Egging, 33, from Rutland…”
I still offer no speculation on this one though. And I am sad I couldn’t be there (due to work) to watch as it is just over an hour by train from where I am.
Hi David – pic is no longer visible via URL
Hi David – pic is no longer visible via URL.
Maybe best as then it will avoid any speculation.
I am sure there is a good reason why. As yet there is nothing on the official Red Arrows web site http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/displayinfo/displaydates.cfm.
I think the picture of Dr Emma Egging is the image we now must carry of Jon – a strong wife with a heart and a brain and committed to supporting flying through Jon’s trust.
Looking at her in the picture (the URL you posted) makes real tears come to my eyes as it must have been so very, very hard for her to see the Reds fly above and start the half marathon knowing she was without Jon (in the run and forever)
No one with any modicum of decency misunderstood your action
I did the easy thing and locked the thread when it became embarrassingly disrespectful.
Bruce has done the hard work weeding out the dross.
Good to see it open again and a measured discussion taking place

Hi Moggy
No one with any modicum of decency should have misunderstood your action. At that time of the evening it was better locked than the forum losing respect amongst our American cousins (who while were are safely in the land of nod would be reading it aghast!).
You carry on and if any of us feel ‘hard done’ by we can PM you or another mod with our ‘whinging’.;)
You mods are to my knowledge volunteers and you are there to do often a thankless job (been there in similar circumstances many times) – Please carry on and I personally have no issues with any of you.:)
Ofcourse MoggyC was right to close and thanks to you for clean up/re-opening.
Hi Bruce
Ofcourse MoggyC was right to close and thanks to you for clean up/re-opening.
IMO this should remain a respectful tribute to a great aviator, a great aircraft a P51 and it should pay respect to all those who lost their lives.
There are many lessons to be learnt and improvements in safety after any tragedy whether air racing, space launches, F1 racing, etc.
It has been a few bad weeks for air shows but it certainly will not stop me going to all that I can afford.
No problem
Hi JDK,
No problem:) but newspaper journalists may not even take any time to identify a Spitfire, from a Tempest or a Mosquito as they are possibly to many of them (not all I must add) are just another vintage ‘relic’ aircraft.
Forgetting as journalists of course that they (and us) continue to think, speak and write in English as our predominant language thanks to the thousands who flew these aircraft and their Great War (predecessor) aircraft in ultra tough conditions and maintained our freedom and the sovereignty of this still great island nation. Each aircraft had it’s strengths and weaknesses and weren’t all a simple ‘job lot’ of metal on a journalists shorthand scribble pad.
I too have not found a reference for a Mosquito doing any tipping of V1s.
That sounds highly unlikely, and I’ve never heard of Mosquitos being used for ‘tipping’ V-1s. I suspect – unless anyone has better info than one of the foaming tabloid’s articles – that we have a classic case of muddling the rare but fascinating event of the V-1 tipping technique beloved of the media with the actual proper intercepts by fighters using guns.
Remember once the Anti-Diver measures were properly worked out, running out of ammunition and aiming to tip a V-1 was effectively a confession of failing to do the job as intended. In the early days while tactics were being developed and it was a free for all, using all your ammunition and having another go made some sense.
Big thanks to Peter V for his firsthand Mosquito experience – and very interesting Coastal discussion, too!
Regards,
Hi JDK
All I have done is given a short direct extract from the newspaper article. I cannot confirm the statements in the newspaper article.

Dr Emma Egging will be taking part in the Bupa Great North Run this Sunday, wearing a red number 4 in memory of her husband.
Taking part with Emma will be Red 10, Sqn Ldr Graeme Bagnall and Angie James, the partner of Red 6. Together they will be announcing the formation of the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that will give disadvantaged young people the opportunity to achieve their potential through gaining access to a variety of inspirational activities and experiencing the thrill of flight.
