This was a St. Patricks Day joke that i got emailed… I hope it does not offend anyone…

“As good as this bar is,” said the Scotsman, “I still prefer the pubs
back home. In Glasgow , there’s a wee place called McTavish’s. The
landlord goes out of his way for the locals. When you buy four drinks,he’ll buy the fifth drink.”

“Well, Angus,” said the Englishman, “At my local in London , the RedLion, the barman will buy you your third drink after you buy the first two.”

“Ahhh, dat’s nothin’,” said the Irishman, “back home in my favourite pub, the moment you set foot in the place, they’ll buy you a drink, then another, all the drinks you like, actually. Then, when you’ve had enough drinks, they’ll take you upstairs and see dat you gets laid, all on the house!”

The Englishman and Scotsman were suspicious of the claims. The Irishman swore every word was true. “Did this actually happen to you?”

“Not meself, personally, no,” admitted the Irishman, “but it did
happen to me sister quite a few times ….”

@ Batman, You are right right in that integration from the Hornet to super Bug would be very easy and familiar to our flight crew. I can’t find a counter argument for that. It is cheaper, would have longer legs for patrols over the artic and so on. But in 10-20 years time will it still be in the same league as the then current aircraft?

As Distiller said, we do need an aircraft with longer legs and I don’t think the F-35 is that aircraft. We are stepping up our commitments globally. From the first Gulf war, Bosnia, Afghanastan, our forces are on the front lines. Our current hornets are good for another decade, but in that time frame…. Will the super hornets be good enough then? I think the next fighter we purchase will have to be current enough to last us a long time.

@ habs, I think we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum and nothing we say to each other is going to change our minds. Yes health care and education should be a top priority, But the money being used for a fighter upgrade comes from our defence budget. I think we only spend 2% of our GDP on defence…. If we can’t use the other 98% on the other priorities mentioned above, we should cease to be a nation.

    Thanks for the reply Batman…

But I think Canada is going to need an aircraft that will last a long time. With countries going LO/VLO, I think we want to be in that game as well.

EELightning, I wouldn’t mind if Canada went for any of the eurocanards. But big brother down south is very persuasive. We finally have a prime minister with some backbone, but that only goes so far.

We set the mark for $9 billion in hopes that it will be locked in place, but as everyone has witnessed, the price of the F-35 continues to grow.

I wish we did do a comp between different fighters for a bid instead of picking the ugly duckling, but I also know that we want what’s current and with the trend….. Everybody wants to buy it…. Canada is definitely not a leader but a follower.

Harper is trying to get our military up to standards. first with the Cormorant (EH-101) for SAR, The Sikorsky for the navy, Leopard 2 for the army, C-17, C-130J, and now F-35 for the airforce. Our military has been neglected long enough.

If the Liberals get their way we won’t have anything. They stopped the EH-101 order for the navy, which was to replace our 40 year old Sea Kings. It ended up costing us more to break the contracts. Now they want to stop the F-35, so that our ageing CF-188’s start falling from the sky.

They do what their title is…. Opposition, they oppose everything. That’s why minority gov’s don’t work.

As for the super bug, I think it’s a good jet, but as we are stepping up our commitments, I think we should have the best for our forces. Now i’m not saying the F-35 is the best…. Far from it. But it will be in use with lot’s of countries for a long time.

What aircraft will the J-20 replace when it becomes operational?

With the J-10, J-11, JH-7A all fairly new into service, can we assume that the J-20 will be ordered in small numbers for crack fighter regiments? Or will this replace most current forms of fighters?

I guess until we know the function of this aircraft it will be hard to guess!

I think I just answered my own questions…..

I thought the F-14 was too heavy for essex class carriers. During the vietnam war, didn’t they fly F-8 for fleet defence as the F-4 was considered too heavy as well.

Would have been nice to see one in RAN service. Would have been nice to see one in RCN service as well After losing the Bonnie…

This is an excerpt from the July edition of Warship.

“Six of the top twenty shipping flags are Commonwealth. Five out of the top twenty benificial ownership countries are Commonwealth”.

Now i’m not saying they have to form a task group, but they can protect shipping in and around designated areas.

Maybe it’s time for a commonwealth navy. Intergrate the navies of the old commonwealth countries to help protect sea lanes and do joint exercises together.

Of course if Britian is erroding it’s navy, will these countries step up to help. I know Canada is having a manpower shortage as is…

    Thanks for the imput guy’s.

I know Avia was producing a version of the Bf. 109 (with a different engine) after the war and was just wondering if they could have adapted the same with the Me.262?

I just think underslung engines would have been a liability in dogfighting. Even with reliable engines in it, was it a pure interceptor of bombers or would it have held it’s own in a tangle with jets of the immediate post war era?

HMCS Iroquois 5,100-tonne will soon be the oldest frontline warship in the western world with the 38-year-old in service.

Canada to spend billions to build new warships

Canada has unveiled a shipbuilding strategy that will spend more than 30 billion Canadian dollars over the next 30 years to build 28 large vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard and navy, as well as 100 smaller ships, Defense Minister Peter MacKay said Thursday.

MacKay said, at the CANSEC arms show in Ottawa, that the federal government will establish a long-term relationship with two Canadian shipyards for the procurement of the large ships, one to build combat vessels, the other non-combat.
    Full Story

I would like to believe that we would get these ships, but as stated in another thread we would get new ships to replace both Iroquois and Halifax class ships. There was talk of retiring 6 of the 12 kingston class for lack of pesonnel.
