I’ve seen the Victor do the fast taxi!! Quite a sight!! The commentator was yelling for the pilot to pull back on the stick a little further!!!!

For me, I think it’d have to be Chuck Yeager. A guy who started the war as a mechanic before progressing to flying P-39’s and then P-51’s. He got shot down, and made it back to the UK to fly in combat again. He ended the war with 11.5 kills.

Maybe it’s what he did in later life which interests me about his wartime career.

    RE: More questions

Ah yes, the dust problem!! I had a shade over 50 aircraft hanging from my ceiling!! I’ve now got them all parked away in the top of my wardrobe. I was forced to do so because I left home for university and my parents didn’t want them there anymore!! So, I have my own personal AMARC now 🙁

Anyway, I was nothing more than an amateur while it lasted. I got into “BIG STUFF”, including 1:48 B-1B, C-130 and a 1:72 B-52H. Expensive, but fun to build!!

RE: UK Airports ignore ban on noisy jets

Having spoken to some people from the AEF, who live under the flightpath at Heathrow, I discovered that when they bought the houses, there was significantly less air traffic than now, and they didn’t forsee the increase which has happened. I’ll bet they are, well lets say not too happy about not banning these noisier aircraft.

How can you compare the noise from a 732 and a 738?

Well, there are monitoring stations around airports which record noise levels. They are certainly around LHR and there are four, I think around Leeds Bradford Airport. I’d say there’d certainly be a noise difference of 10dB, maybe as much as 20dB. It would be interesting to find out!

Of course at LHR, it isn’t the peak noise level which counts. The soundproofing grants are allocated according to a factor which depends on the amount of time an area is subjected to a certain noise level. This isn’t true at LBA, in which areas which experience 90dB or more get a soundproofing grant. Any noise of 90bD or less will not cause sleep disturbance according to the DETR. But every person is different so some will complain while most people won’t because they’d got used to the noise.

    RE: Friday’s question

It was shot down by a friendly fighter (Spitfire I think) on it’s first mission which was over France. This was due to the fighter pilot being unfamiliar with the new type.

Coanda – I thought this test was to see what the minimum unsticking speen was. I.e. pull up on take off until the aircraft is scraping along the floor and see how far you have to fly to get the thing off the ground. I seem to remember a documentary about the development and testing of the 777 in which the same trial was conducted.

    RE: The Sonic Cruiser

It will be interesting to see how this works out. Airbus are building big and Boeing are seemingly developing speed. The last time speed went up against size… speed lost!! To develop a supersonic transport will cost a lot of money. You will also have to develop a new engine aswell… because efficient supersonic transport is impossible with the current level of technology.

Thanks Kabir! The slide the guy showed us wasn’t exactly the most clear thing in the world, so I just wanted to see exactly what they did!

This problem was found 4 months into the test phase. For all civil aircraft, it is expected that the aircraft will go into production for commercial use 9 months after the first flight. This random flutter problem gave Airbus quite a fright when it was discovered because they effectively only had 5 months to cure it!!
