RE: LHR faces over night flight ban
I’ve spoken to some people opposed to aircraft noise around Heathrow. They moved there when there were much fewer flights. The main complaint from some residents is that the noise is non-stop throughout the day.
I asked them what a solution to their problem would be… the reply I got was to distribute the flights to several other airports on the outskirts of London. I told them it’d never work because it would be an air traffic nightmare to have all these aircraft coming from several airports. What do you think?
I did a survey of aircraft noise around Leeds/Bradford Airport. OK, the scale of operation isn’t as big as Heathrow. But I found that the aircraft noise didn’t bother most people, as they’d lived in the area for so long, they’d got used to it.
RE: AMERICAN AIRLINES CRASH!!!
LAST EDITED ON 14-11-01 AT 03:52 PM (GMT)[p]In the engine pylon of the aircraft there are a small number of couplings to attach the engine to the pylon. My University lecturer said that if one of these breaks, the engine would be able to rock backwards and forwards eventually causing it to snap off. This would also explain the rattling noise.
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
Hmm… Why didn’t I pick up on that?? I must have been thinking of the Sea Venom!!!
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
I didn’t know that gun was invented by a cigarette vending machine maker either!!!! Interesting stuff!!!
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
Wooden cannon mounts on the Sea Vixen… Now that is interesting!! You learn something new everyday!!! I know about the 57mm Molins(?) gun. How effective was this gun in combat?
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
LAST EDITED ON 10-11-01 AT 07:21 PM (GMT)[p]Hmm… using my argument against me!! I haven’t read the books recommended by yourself yet, but I have read about the Mosquito in some other books which I possess.
I have the opinion that the Mosquito “B” variants were bombers without guns. But I read that the Mosquito was designed from the outset with provision for 20mm cannons which were fitted when the Mosquito started to be a night fighter and Fighter bomber. Perhaps I’m becoming a convert!! It seems the potential for a Mosquito FB aircraft was there, just not taken up by the RAF as soon as it could have been. So the Mosquito was a unarmed bomber before it was an FB aircraft. That’s where my original thinking came from!
However, I still want to put a Mosquito GR.VI designation onto the FB.VI. The reason, I don’t feel that the Mosquito FB aircraft intentionally set out to destroy enemy aircraft in the air, which is what a fighter aircraft does (or attempts to do).
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
“it was basically a fighter with a bomb added!”
You could say that about a lot of aircraft!! Many aircraft were adapted to carry either bombs or guns so they could be used as fighter-bomber aircraft. It just goes to show how adaptable some aircraft are. I could name several aircraft which were not designed as fighter bombers, but became quite effective at the job.
RE: Concorde’s back!
Words can’t describe it!!

RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
My best of WWII would be the Fw-190.
How about Russian aircraft?
RE: WHAT HAS HAPPENED
Scooter… DATE CHECK!!!!! He’s already briefed us on it… and by the sounds of it Saab 2000 wasn’t best pleased!!!! See the CDG – A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT thread.
RE: P-51D Mustang vs F4U-4 Corsair
What is your definition of a fighter neilly?
RE: P-51D Mustang vs F4U-4 Corsair
I’m open to fresh opinions!!! I think I’m stuck in the haze, as it were. Trying to put a designation onto an aircraft capable of performing so many roles. But hey, this is a discussion forum after all!!!
RE: P-51D Mustang vs F4U-4 Corsair
I totally agree that the Mosquito was a fantastic aircraft! Thankyou for the book title, I’ll have a look for it.
Just a point of interest for me… How many of those enemy aircraft kills were in self defence of fighter bombers?
RE: P-51D Mustang vs F4U-4 Corsair
The Mosquito FB. VI should be classed as a strike aircraft. It is in my opinion a bomber with a degree of self escort. If I had to designate it, the FB. VI would become A. VI. But then that would get confused with the Radar designation!
RE: P-51D Mustang vs F4U-4 Corsair
Wasn’t the mosquito a fast bomber with guns added? 🙂
