The story of her rise from unqualified schoolgirl, through hairdressing to ATC and ultimately to Concorde Pilot is inspirational.
It is so sad that, just like the Aircraft she was destined to fly, she has been taken before her time.
My condolences to her family and friends

Excellent shots CW. That said am I alone in thinking that the A380 is one of the ugliest aircraft ever?
Bobleeds
Before flying on an Airtours A330 back in March 2002, I would have shared the same view, but seriously, a downstairs toilet was very exciting. Definitely one of the highlights of my Jamaica holiday. 😀
Must have been a pretty poor holiday if thet was a highlight.
What wonderful photos!
I was a regular passenger between LBA and Heathrow in that era (well 87 onwards) and the variety of airlines and aircraft was way more interesting than today IMHO.
I fondly remember being aboard the British Midland DC9’s on the BD420 waiting in the queue for take off seeing the lufthansa 727’s lining up ahead of us and then hearing the roar of their engines as they blasted down 27R and into the evening sky.
Please lets see some more scans.
I’m sure you will all join me in wishing both Captain Sullenberger and Flight Attendant Doreen Welsh long, happy and healthy retirements.
What “Sully” achieved in safely landing his aircraft on the Hudson was remarkable, but let’s not forget that the cabin crew helped every person on the aircraft to evacuate.
God Bless both of ’em
The constant threat of strike action and debacles with baggage handling has caused me and i’m sure tens of thousands of other potential passengers to completely rule out using BA in the future. My once yearly transatlantic holiday is too precious to me to be ruined by the actions of militant cabin or flight crew.
I’m afraid more and more people will be adopting the “ABBA” approach – “Anything But British Airways” when making their bookings for this summer.
I believe that the Worldways Canada Tristars (which were used for a couple of summers from LBA amongst other places), also featured a downstairs bar-lounge, which was well frequented on the transatlantic flights. Did they utilise former PSA aircraft
Does it still have the smell from a nearby chicken processing plant?
Yep, and one of the most impressive livery as well …..
And from my limited experience, the friendliest operator over the pond from Manchester
We had a similar thread a couple of years back, so I’ll lift my example from that thread…..Back in the days when BMI were still good old British Midland, and were still profitably flying B733’s from Heathrow to Leeds, I was on the 420 on a particularly stormy windy night (both on departure from Heathrow and all the way up to Leeds). The Pilot, an Australian with a wicked sense of humour was making a number of light-hearted comments through the flight to calm our nerves (?).
He kindly advised that “the good news is the 45+ knots wind at Leeds has eased to around 30 knots, the bad news is it’s now blowing straight across the runway rather than down it”. “It’s going to be bumpy the whole way up so enjoy the Diamond Service bar – If I were back with you guys I’d be asking for a very large one!” Rather than the usual “Cabin Crew -10 Minutes to landing” message we got “10 minutes to splashdown ladies!”
After a very “lumpy” approach in the turbulence with much crabbing into the south westerly gale we made a firm, but under the circumstances, excellent landing. We slowed up, to great applause from the passengers, and the pilot comes back on the mic. “OK folks you can take your hands off your eyes – I know it’s safe to do so because my first officer has just done so!”

Google her……Phwoarrrr!;)
Just look at the BEA Comet in Steve’s excellent photo. Now imagine that on a 757………..gorgeous!
Apologies Paul,
Come to think of it, I believe it may be that one of your earlier posts has lodged subliminally in what’s left of my grey-matter.
In any event the BOAC and BEA liveries would look fantastic!
Can any of our computer literate posters produce mock-ups?
