Also does anyone know where they got there Hunter’s from.
They aren’t ‘new’ to Lebanon – first purchased Hunters back in 1958 – they’d been in storage since the early 1980s. Vatche has much better local information and can most likely fill in the details.
would that faint scribble in the upper left about ‘Lysander panel’ be a clue as to its origin?? 😉
nice find
I’ll check with our Vets at our local Legion Branch – we have no more than a handful, but as far as I’ve been able to ascertain, they were all Army. I should have an answer in the next day or two.
close-up of the mount…
I’ll add, this pic was taken aboard the CAM ship Empire Lawrence in October ’41
The catapult was a rocket-propelled sled (13 small rockets) on a 70 foot long launch rail assembly.
The Ottawa Car Manufacturing Co did all of the Atlas and other AW work. It seems a pretty logical and common thing to do in Canada, to fit coupe tops.
John
Logical, yes… however, I’m still rather perplexed as this is the only photo I’ve seen of this mod. Eight diverse Atlas shots in this chapter – some with unique fits (floats, M/G on lower wing, message hook) but no reference to this hood. Oh well, hopefully something comes up in the second half of this chapter.
A direct view of the engine exhausts is blocked from underneath by the airframe.
Handy, if you want to reduce the opportunities for firing solutions from IR guided ground-launched missiles…
just to add a bit… since helicopters derive little to no thrust from their turbines’ exhaust, (A) a larger exhaust orifice helps to lower the IR signature, and then (B) directing that larger dissipated flow into the rotor disk speeds/increases the overall dissipation, thus – as mentioned above, a lessened opportunity for ManPADs.
Please keep us all updated – sounds like it will be a good read.
Paul, (sorry, tried to reply to PM, but your in-box was full)
It is in fact McClure – he’s been beyond helpful both in supplying material (again and again) as well as manuscript contribution.. I should be seeing his material in the next month or so (fingers crossed – and waiting with baited breath).
James
Sounds more like someone has hit the Thesaurus while writing the narration in hopes of not sounding repetitive – in wildlife, the Osprey (the actual feathered brand) is also known as a sea hawk, and other similar species are known as Erne, fish hawk, etc…
Alpha Jet? There are a few of the in private hands in the States
There is also a handful on the Canadian civil register – TopAces of Montreal use them on contract work with the Canadian Forces. (some still wearing the remnants of their former German camouflage, some in a new grey scheme)
aside from 30+ year-old copies of Wings and Airpower (Sentry Mags), the last few weeks have been occupied with a few chapters of a couple books I’m designing/producing…. Aviation in Canada (Volume 3) and The Red Knight (the RCAF solo demonstration)… can’t help but read them as a move through them.
I may be mistaken, but I believe the RAAF had evaluated the Tornado (or at least it may have been pitched to them) prior to purchasing the F/A-18 A/B. (similar time-frame to the Canadian Forces competition/purchase – Tornado had been pitched at the time)
I cant help with the location but whats going on with the side of the nose? Is that an intake or what?
That’s access to the port internal mounted machine gun bay (after removal of the external cheek pack m/g)
not documentary film material, but I know that my main book clients has been interviewing a Canadian Whirlwind pilot over on this side of the pond for inclusion in his forthcoming (3rd or possibly the 4th) volume…. All I know for certain is that I impatiently await arrival of the photos and accompanying the text.
i’m simply surprised that the OV-10 was ever stopped/retired.
Re. that M346 – is it just me, or doesn’t that probe just simply look like it won’t work on that airframe?? (don’t get me wrong – it’s a sweet looking a/c)
Hi Folks !
Today’s delivery, another part of my slides collection : Malaysia !
Ahhh… another lovely PC-7 – so nice to see the camouflaged ones – and a shark’s mouth to boot!… I’m going to have to catch up on my PC-7 profiles (I think I’m about 12 behind)
