I had an opportunity to watch both the ships up close and front .
The most visually fearsome ship till date is still the Ranjit/Ranvijay class , Looks damn scarry to see her , specially in good old days when they were all dark grey colour.

The Mumbai,Talwars are still gentler looking pretty beast.

The Vikram pic is pretty cool with lots of information. But can’t read it… ๐Ÿ˜ฎ so can you have any translation of this??? ๐Ÿ˜€

Austin as per capability other than stealth I think INS Ranvir is the most powerful warship currently IN have. Specially Brahmos, Barak-1, EL/M-2238 LR and latest EW systems. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I noticed that the Kh-59 was displayed in front of the MiG-29K at MAKS 2009, does anyone know if the K is really capable of carrying it? also what about the KAB-1500?

Finally does anyone know if a targeting Pod has been fitted to the MiG-29K?

I guess KH-59 will be principal AShM of the Mig-29K as many reports and pics support that. But somewhere I read that Mig-29K will be able to carry Brahmos as well.

It will carry KAB-500 KR/OD but don’t know about 1500.

You can’t destroy rural guerrillas by bombing. Ask the USA.

First of all Naxals are not just ‘rural guerrillas’, they are much more than that. They sophisticated weapons and combat training to fight against military. And USA is a complete different story, they have to learn a lot. If they ever face a Bodo militant from north east than only they will know what is real insurgency. But they are small in number w.r.t Naxals with limited capabilities and people backings. It was really difficult for the US special forces to survive in CIJWS and Ladakh joint training exercises.

If any officers have suggested that the IAF can destroy the Naxalites they should be immediately moved to posts where they can’t do any harm, i.e. well away from decision-making or training. Such opinions are dangerous – to India.

lol The ‘official’ is the IAF chief himself! He was talking about heli-borne attack not bombing from fighters as IAF only using transport helicopters! BTW With this comment I think you have very limited knowledge about Naxals. I am from West Bengal (birth place of Naxals) and visited many Naxal effected areas. I know how they have grown from a small village to a large number spreading over five states. I know who helped them earlier and which political party in power gave them safety.

You are talking about removal of the ‘officer’ but he is well aware of what exactly going on there. The Naxals can be defeated in six months if Govt wants, with combined forces of police, civil military police and air force. But they will never do that. There are something they will gain (!) from Naxal attacks and fear.

The Naxalites can only be destroyed on the ground, by a combination of civil action (the most important part) & armed force – used with care & discretion, so as not to create more new recruits than it kills. The IAF can assist mostly with recce & transport.

lol This is what they are doing for last several years. What is the result you can see.

They only way to destroy the Naxals permanently is attack with full force and destroy them from the root with proper local intelligence, air borne attack helicopter support for fast reaction, ‘fight a guerrilla like a guerrilla methodology’ and above all administrative intention to destroy them with local socio-economic development. But many of these are not present in our political leaders!

We cannot use full military force against our own people but as mentioned ‘Naxals are the greatest internal threat India ever faced’, we must use proper force for proper action. Indian police don’t have heli-based weapons like that of USA so they need this support from the IAF, thats it.

That said, barring IAF personnel from using weapons in self-defence is crazy.

Please don’t think the way USA think! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I guess its the nature of defense that the Indian side should not divulge all information, I shall have to take your word for it.

However I do remember an article some time ago not from the internet but from a publication where the Indian defense radar network had significant room for improvement.

Yes there are significant room for improvement and I am glad that they are doing that in a great manner with all types of radars available. As far as I know other than Rajendra, we have Rohini 3D-CAR(100 projected 20 ordered), EL/M-2083 Aerostat radars (total 6), GM-403 LLTR (total 19), EL/M-2106 NG LLLWR (total 20), Bharai LLLWR, Aslesha LL3DR, INDRA-2 and limited number of MASTER-A/MASTER-T radars. In addition to that India acquired 2 GP from Israel and producing 50 LRTR radars. Future LRTR-2 going to have a range of 1500 km. Actually how many LRTR currently India have I don’t know. There were also satellite based early warning system under planning but I don’t know their current status.

I know of Rajendra etc but do not know of any other radars or even if they are fully integrated across the country.

Yes they are fully integrated across the country under the project IACCS from field tactical level to airbase level to Command HQ level to Air HQ strategic level, atleast as per plan this should be commissioned by 2008. Also in 2005/04 Dr. Saraswat himself mentioned that India going to netwrok all the civilian and military radars by 2008.

Indias defenses may be the best in the area but is it good enough to cover the rugged terrain in the north?

Some time ago some limited number of journalists were invited to Eastern Command HQ, Meghalaya for watching some of the capabilities exists there, specially how they intercept a fighter aircraft along hilly Tibet border. It was really good atleast as per mentioned by the journalists. But the IAF have completely changed now. According to earlier reports, IAF had plan to field AEROSTAT and various other new radars along N-E border areas. Note new radar acquisitions by the IAF they are specially mean for rugged terrain regions.

You can’t shoot down Naxals, govt tells IAF

I know that they will never allow IAF to destroy the Naxals. Naxals and Kashmir are strategic weapon for our political leaders to get votes. Poor Indians… Earlier CPI (Marx) helped Naxalite extremists to gain from West Bengal but now this tittan is their father! How can TMC and Congress (Central govt) can intervene in this game!!!! They need naxalites to destroy CPIM from WB, as well as BJP.

I agree, but not sure that it needs to be a MKI’d S-400 maybe the LRSAM and MRSAM would serve us just as well.

Problem is that defensive missile systems do not fit into Indian romanchak (hmm using gujurati language apologies not exactly meaning romantic but more idealistic) image of a warrior going out to hand to hand combat what i think people tend to forget is that to have hand to hand combat you need to know where the enemy is and how far he is or even how to find him

Yes, regarding PLA/PLAAF’s capabilities we don’t suite defensive weapons. Its look like LRSAM (70 km) is a good SAM w.r.t. to Pakistan but nothing special. While a SAM like S-400 will give us decisive advantages over Pakistan, specially when they are the aggressor as always. With S-400, IAF will be able to take them out before they enter Indian air space in a offensive manner. W.r.t. to PLA/PLAAF it will be a good defensive weapons. But if PLAAF field S-400 along AP, Himachal and Ladakh border, they will be able to destroy aircrafts from some strategic air bases inside India.

where the enemy is and how far he is or even how to find him

Our radar network is one of the best in this region.

Indian air force unveils upgrade plan

Heavy lift- medium lift- light observation- attack helicopters, fifth generation-fourth generation – fourth+ generation fighter aircraft, low altitude -medium altitude – high altitude – hilly terrain – AEORSTAT – AWACS – BMD radars, short range – medium range SAMs all are good and some of the best in the world. But our main weakness is still a good long range air defence missile system like S-400. We should definitely cooperate with Russia for development of MKIzed version of S-400 and field them along northern and western border. S-400 will be able to take out any aircraft just take off from a air base deep inside Pakistan.
