The flaw in that Bruce is that poor people no longer know how to cook food or cannot be bothered too, perhaps. All the ingredients for the wartime menu are in abundance today plus many more then unknown or unavailable. The basic ingredients for an extremely nutritious casserole are easy to come buy and even easier to prepare and cook and will feed four for two or three days.

In this respect there are no excuses.

You have a point, but right now there are an alarming number of people who for various reasons don’t even have the facilities for preparing and cooking a meal, I know this doesn’t cover all by a long way, but is yet another factor to consider.

I am also aware that in truth the majority of obesity is caused simply by eating too much, plus must add there were plenty of tubby characters around when I was a kid and rationing was still very much in force at that time.

The high moral tone some have adopted here amuses me. People are actually upset that HMRC is not getting its “fair share” as they would have it.

The upshot of the case is that all of us will pay more but will any of us see the benefit from the increased tax received? Not a chance.

I also sense that there is some confusion between the VAT corporations pay and the Corporation Tax they pay. VAT is a tax added to the value of what we all buy – like the old pre-EU purchase tax. In the case of VAT the seller collects the tax from the buyer and transfers it to the Treasury. Whether the seller levies the tax at 3% or 20% it is of no benefit to the seller.

I don’t think it’s so much a high moral tone as the reality that HMRC need the revenue, anyone managing to dodge paying by any means (legal or otherwise) merely transfers the problem on to other shoulders.

As to whether we will benefit, must admit my cynical head tends to agree with yours.

It does allow the seller to sell at a lower price against those purely British based, that’s the sellers advantage.

Looks like an interesting project, however will noise restrictions and restrictions on supersonic flight give the same problems that Concorde faced? or (being cynical) will an American built jet be treated more lightly than the European Concorde.

I would imagine in John’s world these people are not “deserving” of help, therefore by definition an outreach worker is a non job, that may be a harsh assessment, but sadly probably close .

Certainly would agree that in far too many cases our legal system can be over lenient, that consistency is sadly lacking in too many cases, but whatever makes you believe that this is down to some form of Socialist thinking?
