Clearly you have your own opinion on this, but for me vigilantism is someone setting out to serve their own brand of justice after the event, on the lines of get a posse and round up the varmints.
It’s also safe to say that most of us would avoid confrontation where possible, but on the occasion where the victim is confronted do not blame the victim for the results of any retaliation, frankly if the victim has the opportunity to gain the upper hand and inflict a little retribution, I for one would not condemn that action in any way.
I think some are missing the real exploitation of zero hours contracts, the employee is contracted to be available to work for a company, but with no reciprocal contract of pay or even work, yet ostensibly the employee is employed and not free to take on other work as, if or when it becomes available.
Anyone in a self employed capacity can make their own decision on what work they undertake, yes I am aware that there will be times when a self employed individual will undertake a job just to keep working, (been there), but in the main are in charge of their own working circumstances.
Of course anyone with special talents, skills, knowledge or expertise can and does thrive quite happily with or without a contract, but those without that talent etc can be and are exploited.
Yes,that what short term contracts,no staff morale and the pay peanuts get monkeys do for you.
You missed those lovely zero hour contracts, do a good job today, double your output, no work tomorrow, of course these people take pride in their job, yeah right.
I grew up in a rural area, in those days we had the “lengthmen” who covered the road/ pavement and under hedge rows cleaning, one guy covered a considerable distance in total, but that length was “his”, he took real care and kept it tidy.
Of course this isn’t quick enough today, now we must have a little mechanical sweeper thing occassionally, or the little quad bikes that whizz round allegedley spraying the weeds, I do wonder at times, which is the more expensive, I certainly know which is more efficient.
Well perhaps I’m just seeing things from a more balanced perspective, unlike some on here who appear to want to parade the gentleman around as if he is some kind of hero?
Yes, what happend to him is very unfortunate, however it doesn’t give him the right to react the way that he did.
I think the feeling is more one that the guy should never have been charged in the first place, rather than one of hero worship. Frankly if the Police and CPS had done the job right in the first place, this discussion, this thread would not exist.
Unfortunate!!!!!!!!!, come on, I suppose the two scum bags trying to nick fuel were there by accident, must have stumbled on to his property in error, for me Mr Woodhouse has the right to react in any way he feels fit at the time, reaction only becomes problematic if shall we say 24 hours later he gets a gun, goes out hunts down the scum and shoots them, now that could count as an over reaction.
There is much made of people taking the law into their own hands, I don’t think anyone has advocated that, with Mr Woodhouse, when the situation was stabilised he then called the police, even under those circumstances he did not exact his own retribution after things calmed a little, if he had resorted totally to self administering justice that pair would probably have been found in a ditch somewhere.
Unless we are confronted with that situation few of us know how we woulkd react, the only thing I am certain of is that the health and well being of an intruder, potential assailant, would not be foremost in my mind.
I’m talking late 50s early 60s , when Farnborough particularly would have more prototypes or new developments of existing aircraft, than you are likely to see in total of all aircraft at most shows today.
A slightly different world than today.
I am still waiting for actual examples.
Sorry to keep you waiting, firstly gangmaster workers, the majority if not all are on zero hour contracts, that is how the system operates, no work, no pay, try claiming holiday pay or sick pay, redundancy money obviously does not exist, end of.
Of course other employers see this tactic and want some of that, real situation.
A home care company contracted to local authority providing care services to people in their own homes, company announced that they had sold the contract on to another company, all workers hastily contacted told their existing jobs were safe, but of course new contracts would be required, the nice shiny new contracts were all zero hour, with less allocated time for each call, travelling time between calls classed as not working.
Many workers simply stopped work and started proceedings against the new company, but of course many workers simply felt trapped and needing to carry on. Fortunately the local authority got involved, discovered that the new company was actually just a name change and not a new company at all, discovered some balls and told the new company that they were in contravention of the existing contract and would take legal action.
Eventually sanity was restored, workers got some sort of an acceptable contract, but during all this many elderly people were missed out of visits, cases of people left in their bed until afternoon etc, experienced workers left.
In this case the care contract has now gone to another company created by ex workers of the original company with local authority support, but this was a real attempt to force zero hour contracts on to a workforce, an attempt which has succeeded in other areas.
Last Lightning, as a now non-smoker agree totally with your post, smokers are now regarded as social lepers, are looked at by some as some sort of criminal, yet as you say even though you comply with the laws, do your best not to inflict secondary smoke on anyone, that is still not enough, there has to be another way to persecute the smoker.
Your post makes me wish I’d never packed if only to annoy the do-gooders.
Nah, he imported them cheap from China.
Pollens, flint tools, fossilised animal excrement and remains in the area of the footprints are the main methods.
Did have a chuckle at one paleo-archeologist, as he put it, using evidence found along with special finds, it would be easy to conclude that antelopes were the biggest producers and users of flint tools.
Here in the North West, flooding not a major problem, but the wind has taken a wrecking ball to the area as the low pressure passes through.

Judging from your posts the fore lock tugging, cap doffing to the snobs and snots appears to be more prevalent North of the Border than South of the Border, for me I would prefer Scotland remained part of the UK, the UK is small enough now without further fragmenting.
As I have no vote on this issue then I can’t influence or dictate this issue, however must say that for me if the Scotish people vote for independence, then that is what they must accept and become a seperate nation entirely the only thing shared would be a border.
Comments about getting rid of the tyranny of Whitehall, no problem with that, but personally would hesitate replacing that tyranny with power mad Salmond, but again your choice.
Very touching…

In the UK our barmy Police would probably have arrested them.
Somewhere in this country a group would be now firing up the complaints machine claiming some disrespect to them, that shows a real tribute to mates/comrades.
Just for fun let’s try a few facts, the guy’s salary was actually £89,805, plus payments to his pension fund based on results, now considering that under his stewardship membership of the RMT rose from 57,000 in 2002 to 80,000 in 2008, I would imagine that would be substantial.
No matter what, his job was looking after the interests of his members, as far as I can tell he did that very well, just what did any of you expect him to do?
The guy was an elected trade union leader who did a damn good job of looking after HIS members interests, funnily enough that was precisely what his union paid him for.
Now if our politicians of whatever shade, worked half as hard and achieved a quarter as much for their members this country would be a much better place.
Let’s not start another Maggie thread under any pretext.
