I still can’t see why all the fuss, one bad year because of something that nobody can control and everyone starts ranting.
Fairford is the only real option for a show the size of RIAT, it’s a great airfield. Any airfield would struggle with the amount of rainfall that they had, the organisers made the right choice considering the conditions. One bad year in all the years IAT/RIAT has been going doesn’t mean that it is time to move to another airfield, which in turn may bring another load of unforseen problems. Forget the campsites and the carparks, it wasn’t safe for the public to be allowed into the showground itself.
I had been looking forward to RIAT for a while but having seen the conditions I feel it was the right choice, it wouldn’t have been fun walking around in that all day. Roll on next year.
My mum spotted two 4 engined large aircraft over cardington area, maybe the lancaster but what else?
Could have been Herc’s.
Just had one of the SAR Sea Kings out of Wattisham go over heading north.
Good videos, looked like Pink lady wasn’t going to be outdone by Alister Kay and the rest of the mustangs, it did its own low pass.:)
Isn’t it time this thread was pulled like the last one about a prop strike?
It doesn’t matter about this one it seems.
Anyway hope Miss Helen isn’t too badly damaged and is back in the air soon.
In the year’s worth of planning, knowing that things like this happen (Silverstone, Glastonbury prime examples) ensure that “driveway” lanes and pathways were available…with so much military resource used to put this event together I cannot believe it’s beyoud the realms of possibility to ensure these are protected by say the Royal Engineers and the use of somerfield tracking…???
There’s a bigger issue here I think which is the event has just groan too big and that consideration need to be given to a slightly smaller one where the majority of cars can park on hardstanding – there’s enough of it around at Upper Heyford or Alconbury!
Don’t think it was just the carparks that are the trouble as parts of the airfield were under water. There is no way anywhere could have coped with the amount of water they had at fairford in such a short time, most of the week before where I live in suffolk we had hardly any rain compared to fairford so I guess they got unlucky this year. I personally don’t see what else the organisers could have done to overcome the problems. There were serious safety issues involved if they let the public in and in todays world it would only take a few ambulance chasers claiming against them to spoil things.
I had tickets for saturday and really wanted to go but I don’t think they could have done anything else but cancel.
Just curious, is the finish of the Liberty Belle historically authentic, I can’t find any WWII pics of this aircraft? I’m asking this, because the design of the pin-up looks very modern to me.
Other question I’m always asking myself about these warbirds: why are they today silver painted, as they were left natural metal during WWII?
Being painted silver protects the metal better than being bare metal finish, it didn’t really matter in wartime about that.
EXACTLY! Don’t care what anyone says, for an international event of this size to be cancelled due to waterlogged fields is basically imbarrasing for the UK and shows a lack of foresight by the management team – period!
Hastily arranged contigency plans at the 11th hour just ain’t gonna cut it boys! You better have a serious think about 2009…..my German and Dutch friends think the RIAT managment team are a bunch of amateurs……………
What would you have done to make it happen then?
Here are the three of them together.

Flapjack.

Alister kay was the pilot of MH434 friday, maybe it’s local for him.
What is the German aircraft you can see the tail of (99*32) behind this Spitfire?
OV-10 Bronco.
I saw 248 and Caroline arrive back, which must have been at about 12:30, I must have just missed the silver spit depart, what time was that.
Incidentally, what was the Royal Navy helicopter doing there, he arrived as Liberty Belle was taxying and seemed to want to have a good nose about before settling down near the AAM, it wasn’t Lee Howard was it.
It wasn’t a Navy helicopter, It was an Army Squirrell that you saw, as for the BBMF spitfire it left around 15:37.
And some more,
