great!
There’s still some time left – hopefully we can get some more signatures yet.
It warms the cockles of me old ‘art!
I’m interested… looking forward to more info : )
In that case it’s not a mossie
as most of the wing was wood…
When are you planning on diving it next? How deep is it? I am a diver and would love to take a look, but things are quite hectic right now.
To id the aircraft…
Phil, your best bet would be to bring up a small section of airframe with lots of small parts. You should find a part number or two and this should tell us what the aircraft is.
Of course it is illegal to disturb aircraft remains without a licence from the MoD so you’ll have to use your good judgement. Perhaps you know some fishermen who have trawled up some parts?
Not a whitley i’m afriad….
As Whitley’s were 12V not 24V and this pump is a relatively late wartime one, certainly not early war.
I would give my right arm for some pics tho!!
How sure are we it only has two engines? Could others be buried? If it is a twin engined merlin aircraft I would suggest mossie (wood may well be preserved still), beaufighter, manchester, wellington.
Other inline twins – Hereford (but likely to be 12V) or whirlwind.
I would guess mossie/beau or a four engined bomber with only a pair of engines uncovered.
Elliott
Thanks – i’ll look into it
RE: Most decorated pilot in bomber command……?
Hello Tony!
Sorry, I only just saw your post. Not sure – be a few months before I have them. Around 40 quid apiece. Yes discount for bulk, but cannot say how much right now. Of course, if you can get me some Hurri wing pickups, you can have them for free….

RE: Historic aircraft engines salvage
Hi Keith
Safe to say you have a Whitley fan here! 19 OTU operated the earlier Whitley’s with Tiger radials and many Whitleys came to grief around Kinloss and the surrounds – I for one would be VERY interested in hearing about what you manage to turn up.
Did you manage to get out there this weekend?
Cheers
Elliott
RE: Most decorated pilot in bomber command……?
Thanks Neilly
RE:
I’ll ask around and see what comes up.
RE: Aircraft wrecks in the sea
Hi Ken…
Looking for a dive buddy? I PADI advanced and would love to dive a/c in the channel.
Cheers

RE: Re-enactors, Actors and medals
I would find it pretty hard to believe that anyone would take serious exception to someone portraying an airman at a re-enactment – I suppose there are always a minority of people who would object, but on balance I am totally in favour as long as it is done with dignity and respect. It is perefctly reasonable to wear medal ribbons in the interests of accuracy. The promotion of servicemen (& women) who were killed in conflict, and hopefully the perpetuation of their memory and sacrifice is the important thing here and far outweighs any petty politics on this issue.
RE: Pics from latest recovery
Hi Halibag
No, alas not (short daylight hrs was a big problem), BUT it seems she broke up in mid-air as a great deal of excitment was generated by wreckage a few 100m away from the Whitley, which turned out to be from your Hali! This is a good few km from the Hali crash site and is uphill, so I doubt very much it was dragged there. We’ll be back up there at some stage – it would be great to erect some sort of memorial. We’ll see how it pans out.

RE: Pics from latest recovery
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-12-01 AT 12:41 PM (GMT)]It is planned to rebuild the Whitley using as many original parts as possible – luckily for us there are a lot of bits around. Some parts, such as the bulk of the nose and fuselage will have to be constructed from scratch as no substantial portions remain. We have accurate drwaings, but plan to make a plywood mockup of the fuselage to check dimensions beforehand.
There has been a lot of interest from various museums in the finished product, but it looks like we have found an appropriate home – space is always a problem, even with nation musuems.
RE:
Do you have any part numbers? Should be easy if you have them.
