I suspect a number were thrown off carriers into the sea.
I don’t know but you will only see them on pre-war or very early wartime instruments. Sorry I can’t offer more of an explanation
Really nice video – thanks for posting it
What an amazing and complex project. I wonder how far they have got with the wings?
RIP Edgar. Blue skies mate
Difficult to say for certain Junk Collector without something in the picture for scale but it looks like a piece of faring from the glazing. The N in a circle is on many wartime British aircraft parts – I think it may relate to heat treatment.
Autopilot control **** – a NOS example on the left, on the right, an example from a Whitley that crashed in the far north of Scotland. Note the union coming out of the top. It has an unusual thread – British standard brass (BSB) and I had to buy a special tap and die set especially for this job.
A refurbished example – the unions are a mixture of Armstrong Whitworth/AGS parts. I had to machine the two shiny aluminium reducing unions as they were unobtainable. The two stainless parts were found some years ago in a dump and are Whitley/Albemarle. All brought back together for the first time in many years.
More pictures to come over the weekend, including some Whitley control column and centre section progress.
The de-icer rheostats go back to WW2 and were used on Whitley’s and other types. I expect these ones are 24v?
Come on, how can it not be a good thing. Good luck to them.
Good detective work Brian
The Whitley and a number of other coastal command aircraft had a rear looking periscope arrangement to enable photograpy of depth charge attacks.
It’s quite possible the He 111 and other German aircraft had a periscopes…
Wasn’t that also known in the RAF as a monkey chain (or monkey harness)?
Hi Ken – i’ve pretty much given up with facebook. Any chance you can create a comet thread on this forum? I’m sure it would be very popular.
Interestingly this is up for auction at the moment:
