Is the werk number likely to be on an undercarriage leg?
The wing shape in the photo does look like a Boston, but take a look at the more recent pics here: http://www.eastcoastsailing.co.uk/ECS08-web.pdf
The engine is a Jumo 211. It may of course be different wreck but I am only aware of one definate aircraft wreck on Buxey Sands…
Hello – nice pics. A friend of mine visited this one in the 1970s:
Ju88A-4 – WNr.301436 – SK+UT – coded B3+JP of 6./KG54 – 100 loss, Buxley Sand, 10 miles south of Brightlingsea, Essex, England on 22-Feb-44. Lost, cause unknown. Oblt.Alfred Simm KIA with crew. [source: “KG54” [Radtke] p325 & p367; “The Blitz, Then and Now” p340 txt]
There are still bits there, but it is very broken up now.
P&P I like your post a lot – I sent you a pm.
That screw fitting looks American to me… Not likely to be from a Battle of Britain Spitfire.
UV lighting suggests mid at the earliest or late war onwards. Most likely post war however
So presumably scrapped then.
Thank you Ivor
Hello guys – thank you. Yes, the serial is L1096
Very nice pictures Ian_
Are there any colour Spitfire production photos out there?
The numbers look American – try over on WIX. The inspectors stamp is a bit odd – possibly Republic, which would suggest it is Thunderbolt. Any info on where it was found? How about a picture of the whole item?
The ‘L’ is part of the part number and indicates handedness, i.e. a left sided component.
Postponed again – this time due to museum factors. The new date will probably be Sat 21st Sept. i’ll confirm soon. A million apologies to those who have kept weekends free.
Laurence – ask them to look for any stamps and part numbers
Nice work Andy and co. Looking forward to some pics!
Hi Ian
As MJW says, they certainly do look like Vickers K gun sights, but the ones I have seen have a slight taper at the base. Hendon have a few of these guns – i’m sure they would confirm.
Hi Benny – The label with ‘port gen’ on it looks to be made of ivorine. SP51711 are a pair of brackets from the inner wing spar – they help secure the wing fuel tanks. The plate with A to B on the top is from the fuel management system. Yes the oxygen connector is a good find, especially with the supply union still attached. I’ve emailed you Benny – feel free to email me pictures and part numbers – it might be more practical for you, or keep posting here if you prefer.
