Trivial question – why were Avro Vulcan undercarriage legs (painted?) black?

Can’t think of another example or a compelling reason for it but I suppose there must be one?

    Thanks

    Seb

Why were the Victor ones white or silver as far as I can see it was what they were painted when manufactured Some Victor ones were a mixture of Silver and White

    Two Brats in a family

My father was 20th Entry (563443) and I am 86th Entry ( 682908) both of us were Engine Men My father a FAE ( Fitter Aero Engine) and me a Engine Fitter

I spent 23 years in the RAF and ended up spending twelve years at Marham in the 1960 and 1970. However a short tour at Duxford before 5 years on Bloodhound which a tour at Woomera on Bloodhound Mk 2 acceptance trials was Great NO Bull etc. Watching Blue Steel missiles cough and spit and dive into the desert what a load of rubbish. 2 years at Changi on Shacks with 205

Ended up at Marham and spent 5 years flying in all marks of the Victor tanker as the Crew Chief .

Lastly I wrote a book on the Victor

My father did a 5 year tour in Iraq and Aden without home leave from 1933-1938 with out airconditioning I dont fancy that any takers ???

    Buttons

Bought these in an antique shop. The RAF buttons are easy, the other ?I think I know because of where I bought them!

Two are Kings Crown Buttons and the other two are Queens Crown the smaller shaped one is the Kings from the reign of George V1 one of the other items is an officers whistle from WW1

    Inner Tubes for Victor wheels

Always interested in anything Victor. PM on its way.

I think I am right in saying that these inner tubes go back to the early 1960’s when the brakes and wheels were changed for the current type including tubeless tyres. I found a picture of the old and new brakes in the book by Roger Brooks

    Transporting a Flap

Hi Bill, no I’ve never heard that one although I would have loved to have seen how the hell they got the flap in the bombbay. They must have removed the HDU.
Having worked in the hangers for so long I got to see all the airframes and had an intimate knowledge of their shall we say, eccentricities.
Here’s a photo to start things off.

    Robert
you should look at the dates of that incident as the Two Pointer aircraft were still in use and able to carry an engine in its Bomb bay . The Flap was suspended from the Pannier adaptor as one method of moving it to RAF Goose Bay on the other hand it probably went by Hercules from Lyneham with a Team to repair the aircraft .You obviously do knot know the two pointers. As to the Control Colum Centres I have two of them from two Mk 1 Aircraft XA932 and XH619 In addition a Control Colum From XA932. My K2 XL512 which I collected from Woodfod had blanks fitted in that place when delivered to Marham in 1976

The K2 was only allowed to fly without a HDU fitted to Major Servicings and Return and on dispoal in 1993

    XL161 Wrinkles

I worked on the K2’s between ’82-’87 I never saw any wrinkles on 161, can’t remember reading anything in the limitations log either.

Robert you would never have seen the supposed wrinkles in the skin of XL161 as she went back to HP after the Blue Steel trials and was converted to a B(SR)2 . The K2 aircraft had new inner wing skins any way.

I assume you are using the ‘T’ bar panel driver on the engine doors. Those stress panel fasteners always were a pain. The Squadrons used to use a cut down driver and a HDU winder for more leverage.

This was after my time so the Sooties must have been looking for easier ways after 23 years of the old way ?

sorry unfortunately not but it’s desert pink anyway and quite striking, update in that the artouste finally started but to late to carry out any furthur running, turned out to be a cracked ignitor box

Its worth listening for the igniters during the start and of the Artouste and always check the main engines igniters befor an engine start it saves a lot of brain ache etc

It all depends on the way you close them before refuelling, A good strong Sooty would not need the one you mention

and in a correct shade of HEMP and not PINK :D:D

Victor XL231 At the last repaint she was painted in the correct colours as stated in Mod 4881 more details of all Victor colour schemes are to be found in Volume 2 of Roger R Brooks book on the Handley Page Victor published by Pen and Sword. Page 188-189.

This article also covers all the various paint schemes worn by the Victor in service 1957-1993

I dont think that you will see any Hercules going to musems as they are flown into Marshall at Cambridge and stripped of all usefull spares and the hulk sold for scrap which is cut up on sight many fly in but not all leave

    Victor Undercarriage operation

Victorsim, i am currently modelling LustyLindy for the FlightSim http://www.flightgear.org/, most of the 3d model is done and it’s flying, basic textures not yet properly mapped and im working on the interior.

Do you have any info on a) the landing gear raising sequence and b) a schematic of what instruments are where, both cockpit and engineers any help would be appreciated.

    Alex

I saw a very good item in the book by Roger Brooks on the Victor published by Pen and Sword
