Is this the system India has been working with Israel on? Maybe one day India will get ‘true’ air-defence escorts for her carriers.
Yes this is the system, there is also a land based version of this (with extended range), and yes Indian Navy should get one of those shiny shiny escorts, across the Indian Ocean Region i see no threat to the IN (if USN is not a threat), however they should be prepared.
Very nice article to inform people about the whole sat business, Is the publishing agency leftist/communist?
The Ship was planned in Soviet era where industry was distributed.
So from where all will the Shipyard working on the ship have to source different components (electrical and mechanical) i read that most components were useless by the time of the sale, and where will the required consulting for design and refitting come from in todays world?
Considering the very limited options (to the degree of non available) of friendly nations that can provide actual operational experience in very complicated crew and pilot training my question is:
Can PLA-N afford not to have the Varyag operational before they build a new carrier?
Why would I sing the British national anthem?
I find it hilarious just reading you indian fanboy posts and all the delusional drival about “indiginous” developments, here are some classic jokes which have made me laugh over the years…
Downgraded Leopard mark1 mascarading as the Arjun…over 20 years of development and even the indian army reject it 😀 cant even license build a German tank with all the support available.
Modified SA-6 Gainful mascarading as the Akash missile…wtf is the big deal? taken you that long to license copy a soviet era SAM?
License production of the EuroCopter BK-117 mascarading as the “Advanced” Light Helicotper…
why would I be angry? man, you clowns have been providing me with so much entertainment over the years, I just look forward to all the dhoti waving that has yet to come 😀
So tanks, SAMs, helicopters, and dhotis
While talking of PAFs capability in a Indian space and missile discussion.
Right, one Brit you are.
And i am the clown here?
The US special envoy to the region was shown gun camera pictures of iaf fighters which intruded into PAF airspace, he was warned “these will come down next time”…as widely reported in the media…or is this 1 particular report you would like to question the validity of? 😉
Right….
bet you were singing your national anthem while typing all of that.
its so lovely to read disillusion posts.
Perhaps you should direct your anger at other places, i used death metal back when i was 15, give it a try, i think some nice pakistani bands already play it.
While some if not most of the mirages are BVR capable, the PAF have never really released any details as to which BVR missile they could employ. My guess would be a derivative of a South African missile, given the close association with other air-launched weapons. However, in general, the PAF have kept most people guessing, which is a better weapon than any perhaps. If the claims by indian fanboys here regarding the indian “inteligence” is anything to be believed, then perhaps the indians should know more about the BVR capabilities of the PAF than anyone..lol
A plane with BVR missiles and a BVR capable plane are two seperate things, to have BVR missiles you need to buy and integrate them to the plane.
Why would a airforce keep its weapons secret in a neighborhood as limited as ours, the whole point is to deter before attacking.
To deny iaf the use of Pakistani airspace, the PAF would primarily rely on its extensive ground network of radar and early warning stations and engage the iaf within visual range, on PAF’s terms, a tactic eluded to by the former ACM in previous AFM interviews.
The PAF have also been working on anti-BVR combat training, although what this actually means is anyones guess. No one is saying the PAF will have any easy time agianst the iaf, but given previous experiences, the iaf won’t be able to dominate either.
The apparent “accidental” incursion of a batch of iaf fighters at multiple points along the border in the aftermath of the bombay attacks, with an immediate reponse by the PAF and reported lockons by PAF fighters, only goes to show the type response which could be expected by the PAF.
If the iaf were so confident about their potential, why haven’t they carried out their “surgical” strikes against Pakistan? Assuming they ever get that far that is…
Well if it helps you, Ex-Cope India were exactly like this scenario, USAF fighters w/o BVR shots or AWACS fighting off a numerically larger force (InAF) in defensive missions directed by ground control.
Judging from models and CGs, she will be fitted with a radar out of the Fregaet MAE line plus a larger Podberezovik long range (500km) 3D air search/surveillance radar (like the one installed on Kara class cruiser Kerch)
From what i have noticed the models and the CGs of indian navy often times turn out to be inaccurate. Is there any information released which covers the exact scope of the project (apparently the scope has increased by quite a lot).
If this ship makes it to operating with the Indian Navy, will it serve as the command and control centre (of the group of ships it operates with), and what features will the ship have to be effective in that role?
The timeline for this ships service (2012/14 to 2022/25 or later) as it stands today (with every chance of being further delayed) will see it serving with some ships that are advanced that the current ships (in terms of being connected together) how will the systems on board this old flag ship stand up to them and operate with them?

OKINAWA, Japan (NNS) — Ships, aircraft and submarines from the United States, Japan and India will take part in Exercise Malabar 09 off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, April 26 to May 3.
I guess no chance of watching a sea harrier refuel from a hornet, i remember a image from 2007 ex-malabar, a rare picture indeed.
Is there any study available online that assesses what the piracy in that region is costing the global community versus the cost of stationing a permanent force large enough to deter the pirates?
If it’s already been posted I’m sure someone will tell me. This was sent by a friend in Florida. The Obama myth of his “anti-pirate decisiveness” is greater than the reality.
Since when did people start taking chain mail seriously? (….. i think you forgot to add the “send this mail to all your friends and you will win a million dollars, if you fail to do so, you will die in 7 days”)
What sensors/electronics have been chosen for the ship(ex-Baku, now AD. Gorsh., to be Vikramaditya)?
Who will create/install the command and control suite (hardware+software) for the ship?
Or will the ship retain and run on the old stuff?
According to online information on the ship it had some sort of experimental phased array radar and some soviet anti submarine suite.
The fourth unit of the Kiev-class, the Baku [later renamed Gorshkov], is sometimes considered a separate class. Improvements included a phased array radar, extensive electronic warfare installations, and an enlarged command and control suite. The flight deck was extended forward approximately 5 meters over those of the first three ships. Other modifications included the addition of four additional SS-N-12 SLCM launchers (for a total of 12), the deletion of the SUW-N-1 launchers for nuclear armed FRAS-1 anti-ship/anti-submarine ballistic rockets, and deletion of the SA-N-3 surface-to-air missile, and 10 21-inch torpedo tubes. The ship is equipped with an Udav-1 integrated anti-submarine warfare system with 60 anti-submarine rockets.

Again, quite simplistic thinking. I don’t think the scenario of the USAF during GFI is comparable with the Indo/Pak scenario. First of all, the USAF was hunting down scuds in an entire country.
The same does not apply to the Pak/Inia scenario. As you mentioned above, even if the prithvi was within 100km of the indo-pak border, most valuable targets would be in its range. That already defines an area where most prithvi launches are likely to take place, providing an area for the PAF to concentrate on.
What is the area that you are talking of (its a huge border).
USAF had more intelligence gathering capability (from a whole lot of sources) than india and Pakistan together (in todays world) in both iraq wars.
Given the number of UAVs, AWACS and other intelligence sources, in combination with long range standoff weapons, the PAF doesnt need to gain air superiority in indian airspace. It could operate within its own borders and still target potential prithvi launch sites.
Have you seen the ground resolution that a AWAC gives at 100 km distance?
(i dont think any AWAC or AEW plane is supposed to give anything useful at that distance)
In all probability when a operational number of planes with well trained crews start service they will be flying well inside the border outside of the range of any weapons looking at the air picture (what they are supposed to do) and making sure no surprise strike takes place from any direction.
http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/jstars/
UAVs show up on radar, need to receive and send data, and can get shot down.
Collecting that much of intelligence will be a huge effort, it will require a lot of resources.
A better task for the long ranged weapons will be targeting the huge numbers of ‘fixed’ military targets in India.
But if you take Europe and Russia, our main suppliers of arms, they not only have good relations but they don’t mind if India uses their fighters as nuclear weapon carriers, they didn’t mind if India waged war against Pakistan whenever she wants to, they don’t mind if india tests a nuclear weapon, they don’t mind if India builds long range ballistic missiles.
As long as we pay in dollars, pay in rupees and they will “mind it”.
If we can not get some piece of equipment or tech anywhere else other than the USA and its important that we possess it then we should forget about pride/sovereignty etc. etc. and get it. If we can get it from Europe, Russia etc. no need to sign the weird agreements with them.
simple.
This article sounds like India is going to build just one 40,000 ton IAC. Which, would be followed by a much larger 65,000 design! (though very similar)
No if you look at the news report and then look at where the three IAC are supposed to go you would know why a larger carrier is in consideration.
Three IAC go to two AC groups in the two fleets.
These are conventional powered medium sized carriers that are tasked with providing air defence to the groups and to support intensive helicopter operations.
The area of operation of the two fleets is not that far from India and it is also one of the busiest sea routes.
Now what do you think two separate larger AC which will translate into one AC group will be tasked with?
Of course its just a idea that will be followed by increasing the capacity of a domestic shipyard to handle such a ship, and probably happen around when the IAC project completes, and will be preceded by a concept study first and a request for funds. (post 2022).
This is what Mr. Aroor overheard on his recent trip to CSL
The keel of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, to be the second warship christened INS Vikrant, will be laid on February 28 at Kochi. But it is now clear that while Cochin Shipyards will build three aircraft carriers in the current 37,500-ton category (the second and third are to be christened INS Viraat and INS Vishaal apparently), design work has already begun in earnest to develop and build two more aircraft carriers with not only much larger displacements, but possibly nuclear propulsion as well.
http://livefist.blogspot.com/2009/02/cochin-shipyard-to-build-5-aircraft.html
I think what the rumors are pointing towards is that it is under consideration and by no means a certain project, the IAC itself was under consideration for a long long time.
PLAN trying to conduct R&D. 😀
No its
“PLAN South Sea Fleet Projecting Power and Showing the Flag”
I can not believe no one did this before.
