As I don’t consider the above worth dignifying with a response, please consider this a blank posting!
Then why bother posting the above? Sheesh!
Anyone who sets themself up in the public eye has to accept the ups and downs, and as professionals we of course do. But no one can take pot shots and not expect the target to vigorously respond against what is usually misinformed criticism – as in the case of ‘Blue Diamond’.
Erm,
Who said I didn’t expect you to respond vigourously or otherwise? I’ve the right to my opinion, you’ve the right to challenge it. I have no problem with that, it’s called free speech. As for turning off PMs, you initiated the exchange, I responded to each message you sent me. Since we had sent each other the same number of messages up to that point I did not see any reason in continuing. I have things to do other than sparring via the web all day.
No probs. I was kind of hoping it was 467…
I have a lovely poc of Jamie Rankin in the cockpit of a Spit with kill markings at, I think, Biggin Hill. Probably in the loft – a contemporary one at that. Have a few snaps with him scxanned in too I think. 609 always liked 92.
Aut Cursu, Aut Comminus Armis.
A lovely poc? Didn’t realise Jamie Rankin had pocs. 🙂 Nice collection of pics by the sounds of it.
No. That would be plagiaristic!!!!
On this note I must leave. Not running away but just had some sad news regarding one of my Dad’s sisters. More important things to do now than josh and argue on the internet.
Sayonara.
Well, if you got legless then I suppose it explains your presence on this thread.
Very witty indeed. One of Wilde’s?
Ah….thats who you are!
Maybe but after some of the parties at Wildenrath I’m not so sure even now that I remember who I am. :p
On that note, there’s still a possible entry point, and not too far from Bader: what is Blue Diamond’s thinking behind, eg, his username and quoting the 92 Squadron motto in his signature? Would he (perhaps after a deep deep breath), care to share the connection? He may have done so elsewhere, in which case my apologies for missing it
Don,
I had close personal contacts with 92 in its operational days and have been honoured with invites to the Squadron Association’s annual dinners. I’ve had the exceptional honour to have had personal dealings with BoB and DAF 92 veterans and one of the latter is still a close personal friend of mine. I’m also heavily involved in the operation of a unique living memorial to the Squadron. Indeed at its rededication back in September 1998 our association was blessed with the attendance of a number of 92 veterans from BoB days up to the Lightning era.
I hope this answers your question.
P.S. I revised/added a lot of material to the wikipedia entry as the original was both sparse and inaccurate.
So, you go to work for free, do you?
Dilip Sarkar MBE FRHistS
In the world of heritage transport preservation I do just that, work for free and no expense account. Doesn’t make me a saint, nor better than anyone else, but does maybe explain my opinion regarding those who make a living out of selling relics as to opposed to conserving/restoring them.
So, you go to work for free, do you? Andy Saunders and Dilip Sarkar legitimately make a living as professional aviation historians – although by different means. Speaking personally, I research, write, publish. lecture and provide consultancy, and, believe you me, the profit margin is certainly not great – such are the high costs of running such an operation.
How dare you, sir, link my name to unethical work and money being a prime motivator. Such a statement merely serves to prove that you do not know me and are completely ignorant of what I am about. Indeed, if you read the thread you will see that my ‘driving force’ regarding the Casson/Bader matter was integrity.
What is extremely sad, however, is that cowards like ‘Blue Diamond’ are able to hide behind their ‘handles’ and sling mud on forums such as these. If you feel that strongly that you need to bad mouth me so publically, you should have the courage to identify yourself. The fact that you have not makes your comments worthless, and, I daresay, motivated by jealousy, which seems to be why most stones get thrown at those of us who have made our passion our lives.

Yawn, yawn, yawn!
i think the lady doth protest too much.
Interestingly, I note that ‘Blue Diamond’ has been on line this morning but made no response to this thread or, indeed, the PM I sent him.
Res Ipsa Loqiter? The Facts Speak For Themselves.
That is because I have had to take my dog to the vets for an x-ray. I have responded to your and Andy’s PM just a few moments ago. Didn’t realise the world of aviation writing was so full of immature individuals. Then again you and Andy are doing one hell of a good job to promote your various projects. I suspect it won’t harm your book sales at all as people will no doubt buy them to see just what you are arguing about.
Me neither, you’ve certainly had some free publicity out of it. you’re good at PR i’ll give you that.
Sadly that seems to be the driving force of the main protagonists here, sod ethical excavations just count the pennies. The more this continues, the less respect I have for Messrs Sarkar and Saunders and their ilk.
Re the Big Wing.
Personally I just couldn’t believe it when the narrator came out with the line that ‘Bader was allowed to proceed with the Big Wing experiment by RAF top brass’, or words to that effect, and, worse, that without the Big Wing ‘the outcome of the Battle of Britain would have been very different’.
Firstly Bader was allowed to develop his (completely flawed)
Thankyou Dilip for putting Bader’s Big Wing nonsense where it belongs i.e. the rubbish bin.

Mate
The former owner who owned this machine, was a New Zealand family.
I thought they were nuts, when I heard they swapped it for a complete Spit Mk.XVI (ex USAF Museum ).Im sure this Machine will eventually end up in its true former Pacific WW2 colour scheme , one day !
Thunderbolt
It’s only a coat of paint mate. Just be thankful that another Spit is returning to flight. Considering how much this must have cost the new owner, he has the absolute right to paint it in whatever colour he likes. Personally I’d have gone for a 92 Squadron ship but it ain’t my Spit and unless I’m prepared to cough up the readies for a repaint, I’ll certainly not criticise the owner’s choice.
Cracking stuff. Wish I’d been able to be there.
