Kirov is back:)
looking forward for some pix.wondering if any oscar or akula going there too.
What do you mean Kirov is back? It has been active for several years.
Looks like the four ship will include Admiral Chabanenko. http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/world/9848175.asp?gid=244&sz=28180
Your reputation for discrediting anything you don’t like doesn’t help.
Look harder, most RuN compilation sites (globalsecurity, wikipedia, warfare.ru) list at least 2 vessels as possibly being modernized. And don’t bother whining about sources.
http://russianforces.org/blog/2004/04/typhoon_submarines_decommissio.shtml
A report about the “Dmitry Donskoy” (Typhoon class) undergoing sea trials after a long period of modernisation. It states that it will be armed with 20 x Bulava misiles, so more than the Borei class…..does this mean the other 2 Typhoons will undergo a refit as well ?
Why do the russian call all modernized subs “new”?
What kind of modernisation did she go through this time? She is already rebuilt as a Bulava testbed and launched several missiles. “Long period of modernization”…..does that mean that they perhaps have redesigned the missile/tubes? That would mean a new round of testing, i doubt they have a operational missile by the end of the year as stated.
When is it expected that the first of project 955 will launch a missile?
BTW, according to several sources (START reports the most reliable i guess) the first of project 955 will carry 16 missiles: http://russianforces.org/blog/2007/10/first_project_955_submarine_wi.shtml
It could also be that only a few tubes on the Dimitry Donskoy is modernised to launch Bulava missiles. No need to replace all the missile tubes as long as the sub is only a testplatform…?
[QUOTE=Stonewall;1289757]Big Russian flotilla heads for Syrian port
DEBKAfile’s military sources disclose that a powerful Russian naval contingent, led by the aircraft carrier Admiral
Kuznetsov, left Murmansk on the Barents Sea Aug. 18 destined to dock at the Syrian Mediterranean port of Tartus
Saturday, Aug. 23. It includes the Russian Navy’s biggest missile cruiser Moskva and at least four nuclear missile
submarines
DEBKA is full of bull****. Try doing a deployment from the Brents Sea to Syria in 5 days..
However, this could be a while away as Russia is yet to respond to the Indian Navy’s request for loaning an Akula-class submarine that is capable of launching SLBMs. The navy’s Russian-made Kilo-class submarines and the German-designed HDW submarines do not have the capability to fire such missiles.
Does that mean that the newly Indian-leased Akula (not yet delievered) is modified to fire SLBM’s? As far as I know, Akula class only has 53 and 56 cm torpedotubes and no VLS…
Krivak, a reconstruction/rebuild I assume.
Thats actually a pretty good series of photos. It is interesting that there does seem to be a slight bias towards ASW is the ships that are getting this attention. It would be interesting to know whether there are any system upgrades and if so to what extent?
It is of course worth mentioning that the youngest Krivak II hull is now 25 years old.
Edit: Closer inspection leads me to believe this is the Druzhny which would make her a Krivak I and 33 years old! That is a pretty old hull (especially given what has happened to much younger Russian navy units) and one has to wonder whether she really is being refitted or sent for scrap, the upper works certainly look a mess……..anyone have any details?
If this is Druzhny then take a look at her in google earth: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/placemarks/968528-Moscow.kmz In the river outside Moscow! Probably planned preserved and converted into museum. You have an old Tango submarine down the river as well.
http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/3694102.jpg Here you have an image of her linked in google earth.
Great work! 😎
note my edited awnser above
Thank you for a very good explanation of the differences between the different Kirov’s. I agree, the two hulls in Pacific are probably the same ship.
What about the SSV-33, is she in same bad shape as the Kirov’s or is she maintained better? How old is the command ship, and has she refuled her reactor? Has spared parts for Lazarev been used on this ship?
Edit: Did a google search, due to high operating costs, SSV-33 was laid up.
I did a comparisation of the Kirov pictures from Google Earth.
From top to bottom:
Ushakov/Kirov – Severodvinsk
Nakhimov – Severodvinsk
Veliky – Severomorsk
Lazarev – Krym, Primorskiy Kray – Pacific
Unk ship – Bolshoy Kamen – Pacific
Its definitely a Kirov hull. As you can see Lazarev and this unk ship are very familiar, so either the unk ship near Bolshoy Kamen in fact is Lazarev but an older/newer sat-image than the one in Krym, Primorskiy Kray. Or the unk ship is the fifth and unfinished Kirov..
Anyone else have comments ?
—> What in the world is this then? http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=43.126617,132.331266&spn=0.005708,0.010042&t=h&z=17
Good question.. length measured to be about 250 meter, so at least the length seem to be about the same. Could it be the fifth Kirov hull, “Dzerzhinsky”, later renamed “Kuznetzov” – Cancelled Never finished according to wikipedia. I cant see any VLS cells on this ship, maybe they never got that far. Not much paintjob done on the helipad either, the hull looks kinda unfinished so maybe…Will see if I can find out more about this one..
Then again on reflection this is probably the Russians playing hard ball to get some extra money. Kind of “Don’t pay up! – Don’t get your shiny newish carrier!”
Whilst Russia would quite like another carrier INS Vikramaditya is built around the Mig 29 and not really suitable for the Su33. On top of that she is being fitted with a number of systems non standard to the Russian navy like Italian diesels.
I really don’t see why Russia would want to go for such a Nuclear option with an important customer, they would kiss goodbuy to a number of potential contracts.
Italian diesels? Source……?
The Kiev class were originally equiped with 8 turbopressurized boilers, 4 steam turbines (200,000 shp). Doesn’t that mean no diesel? They use fuel oil burners to heat the boilers..
Have seen no info about the boilers beeing removed..
Aircraft Carrier May Go to Russian Navy
http://www.kommersant.com/p-12082/military-technical_cooperation/
The aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be delivered to the Russian Navy instead of going to India after modernization. A source within the Russian military-industrial complex told RBK that Russia and India are now reaching an agreement on changing the conditions of the 2004 contract for the ship’s overhaul. Under that contract, India received the hull without charge on condition that it be modernized at Sevmashpredpriyatie. The value of that contract was $1.5 billion.
According to unofficial information, negotiations are currently underway to expand the value of the contract by about $1 billion. “That question is being worked out. If a compromise is not found with India, the aircraft carrier will probably be purchased by the Russian Navy,” the source said.
The Admiral Gorshkov was built in 1978 as the Baku. Its name was changed in 1991. It will be equipped with Russian-Indian Bramos missiles and Russian or Israeli air defense systems after modernization.
Maybe the best solution!
For the Google Earth experts.. how do you explain there being 5 Kirovs visible?
2 around Vladivostok, 2 in Severodvinsk, in 1 Severomorsk.
the SSV-33 command ship is in the Vladivostok area as well.

Ushakov here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=64.574946,39.799079&z=17&t=h&hl=en
Not sure about Ushakov and Nakhimov, who’s who.
Name of Ushakov i think is taken by one of the remaining Sovremenny. (Source warfare.ru)
Where are you seeing the second Kirov in “Vladivostok area” ?
Par for the course.
Funny, acording to warfare.ru: “The Amur class is a Relatively small, general-purpose repair ships; carry extensive spare parts supplies.”
and they cant fix a broken enginge?
Propulsion: 2 diesels, 1 shaft, 3,000 bhp, 14 knots
Crew: 210 + 210 passengers/transients
Cargo: 280 tons spares
Both diesels down? Must be a power-generator broken or something.
Sign me up on that list Gollevainen, tired of they’r pissing contest. Back to topic! :dev2:
how is that stupid? A question was asked and the answer was pretty obvious. Of course now, if that hurts your feelings, then I can’t help you with it. That’s why you need SSNs to protect your SSBNs.
Perhaps me misunderstanding. I thought you believed the new Indian SSBN to be as quiet as a Ohio class. That would be a stupid statement
