RE: Birmingham International Airport (UK)
I’ve seen the plans of the satellite terminal and it does look as though the big jets will be catered for, which is good news. The international pier currently in use will also be demolished and replaced with a new bigger pier. This will have dedicated wide bodies stands too, hopefully. 2001 will be the last year that BHX will suffer from this problam of not having suitable stands, and when the work has been completed, it will be a very impressive airport. If you want to find out more about Birmingham, check out the official web site, http://www.bhx.co.uk – the site is worth a visit and contains plans of what the finished airport will look like in 2005.
It is interesting to note that Air India are intending to start a new service from BHX when they have more spare aircraft available. The flight will route from Bombay or Delhi to BHX via Paris CDG. I have heard that the A310 may be used.
Turkmenistan are starting a BHX Toronto twice weekly service from 23rd Jan as well.
I am currently in the process of constructing a web page devoted to BHX, although I have only just started work on this and I will let you know the address when it is finished, hopefully in February/March.
RE: Birmingham International Airport (UK)
I really must bring this subject up again. Emirates started flying a daily BHX-Dubai service in December using the A330-200. No big deal to some, but very important to the ongoing development of BHX.
However, the problem is that this new service has highlighted a problem that has been hindering the airport for quite some times now. The problem? The lack of wide bodied stands available. When you consider that BHX is the UK’s fifth busiest airport, you would expect it to have proper stands for the big jets, wouldn’t you?
One day last week, the A330 arrived ontime from Dubai only to be held up due to the allocated stand being unsuitable because a B757 was parked on the next stand and if the A330 were to try and use the stand, her wings would have hit the 757.
Surely the airport should be better prepared for handling aircraft of this size? Pakistan have been flying 747’s out of BHX for almost a year, and I’m sure they have the same problems from time to time.
There is not enough space in between stands to handle a pair of A330/747 sized aircraft, and BHX wants to compete with Manchester and Heathrow????? Oh dear.
Luckily, a new satellite terminal will start to be built later this year, and this should address the problem. It is a pity that this problem exists already though.
The good news is that the Dubai service is doing well and Emirates stated in a press conference that they want the service to go twice daily within the next 18 months. Let us just hope that they will wait for the new satellite terminal to be built first…
RE: spectators areas in the UK airports.
Don’t know what LHR is like these days, but I always used to watch aircraft from the top of the multi storey car parks that are between terminals 1, 2 and 3. The last time I did this was in 1994 though, so I’m not sure if airport security has clamped down on car park spotters. I got some good shots of aircraft from those car parks as the view of aircraft departing from both main runways was good.
RE: So is this finall??
That is fine with me..I think Keltic is a great choice.
RE: air pockets
Never been in an airpocket myself, but I think it did cause either a 707 or DC-8 to crash in the sixties I think I remember reading somewhere. Anyone shed any light on this, because I’m not 100% certain.
When I was onboard a Britannia Airways 767-200 approaching Birmingham a while ago, we encountered heavy turbelence. We must have dropped about 50ft or so, well it felt like 50ft!! Put it this way, there were quite a few passengers on that flight with their eyes closed. One woman sitting next to me was gripping the arm rest so tight I thought she would have left permanent nail marks!
We landed safely though. Summer storms, you can’t beat them.
RE: concord test flight
I would place money on Filton too. It has a big wide runway and was where she was built.
RE: concord test flight
P.S. – I think Air France are conducting their tests in Marseille. Not sure where BA will test their a/c yet though…
RE: B767-400. WHY???
The 757-300 and 767-400 have been slow sellers so far, but can you remember when the both airliners were totally new products? It took them both quite some time before they started selling well, so I would not be surprised if the orders start coming in more frequently….Then again, the competition from Airbus is much stronger these days..
RE: british midland
BMI??? I thought they wanted to drop the word ‘Midland’ from the title because it sounded ‘too regional.’
RE: American Airlines ( as in IN the US )
I was sad to see TWA been eaten up by AA, but it must be said that TWA was in decline for years. TWA and Pan Am were the great carriers of the US and I’m not the only one that is sad to see both names disappear.
American and United seem to be on a meglomaniacal quest to take control of anyone who gets in their way. They already operate hundreds of aircraft each and have an unfair monopoly at many US airports. How much longer will the likes of Continental last before they are gobbled up?
RE: concord test flight
Air France are commencing high speed taxi tests in the south of France on 18th Jan and BA are currently fitting the new Kavlex protection to the fuel tanks, as well as making the wiring around the area of the tanks stronger. It is to cost BA £18 million to do this, but they are confident a once daily Concorde service flying LHR-JFK will commence in the Spring. If this goes OK, they will operate the standard Concorde timetable from September onwards.
RE: Holiday Airlines – Is their service up to scratch?
I’m flying to Crete with JMC in September on 752…Oh dear.
RE: A380
500+ in economy class??? Such a nightmare scenerio exists already. Have you ever flown on a Japan Airlines 747SR?? My advice is DON’T!
RE: Holiday Airlines – Is their service up to scratch? MONARCH!!!
I have flown with Monarch and I thought they were not the best charter airline I have flown with, but were OK. Airtours is perhaps the worst (in my opinion) as the staff were rather rude and the 757 we flew on was in need of a major overhaul.
Britannia I find very good, and when I flew to Kos I thought the staff were vert friendly and the 767 we flew on was immaculate.
Dan Air was a nice carrier and a lot of people remember them as they did have a friendly service. The only problem with them was the fact that some of their aircraft were on the wrong side of twenty years old. Do you remember their 727-100’s??
I still have a soft spot for Air Europe. It is quite scary to think that it was nearly ten years ago when they went bankrupt.
RE: Poll for club
Well, it is nice to be considered, thanks aliairbus! You know your stuff too and I would like to see you get involved in this project very much. I would suggest Keltic as editor, as he has always brought up some good discussions on this forum and knows his stuff. It is a shame Philb no longer uses the forum, I would have voted for him as well.
