RE: A pic from down under!
Qantas 747-400’s are otherwise known as ‘LongReach’ class aircraft in their fleet. Their first one was delivered around 1989, and I’m sure the airctaft used on that delivery flight set some kind of distance record (not too sure on that one though). I know the A340 stole the record a few years later, but I believe the 747 took it back again.
All QF 747-400’s are powered by RR RB211-524 powerplants. Smashing aircraft if you ask me.
RE: Pic Of The Day-As good as it gets!
Well, where ever the 747 is landing, it’s a brilliant photograph. I just hope nobody built a snowman on that spot…
RE: Latest news for the British Airways fleet
I’m a subscriber to several mailing lists, but a really good site for fleet info is this link: http://www.jethros.i12.com – Let me know what you think of the site. I reckon it’s one of the best fleet listings on the web.

RE: Airprt pic of the day-05/03/02
Is it Faro?
RE: 1,000 posts possibly hours away!
Good idea – Hey, I can remember the good old days….Back in Summer 2000, when we were lucky to get 5 posts per day. Some of you may remember the likes of PhilB (the guv’nor) – He went over to the Airliners.NET forums (not sure where he is nowadays).
A lot of members have come and gone in the past two years or so, but it’s good to see the likes of Comet, Kabir and Keltic still contributing. It’s also nice to see others such as Saab 2000 and GEForce still here – I was shocked upon my recent return to this forum – It’s a lot busier than it used to be, and membership seems to have increased by quite a bit.
I think as long as everyone gets along and respects each other, then we we easily get to number 2,000. Hurrah!!! All in all, I’d say there is a darn good crowd on here – I’m just sorry I was away for so long…
RE: 1,000 posts possibly hours away!
How about an all expenses paid trip on Concorde for whoever posts the big number 1,000?!?! Hmmm, maybe not….
RE: Pic Of The Day-04/03/02!!
Any photograph of the Caravelle is a good one in my book – An absolute classic jetliner.
RE: South African Airways
I quite like their current livery – and it isn’t all that old either. Still, I’m sure the new colours will turn out to be nice. The African carriers seem to sport some fantastic liveries – Just look at little old Nationwide!
RE: General UK Airline News
Also some BMI news – A320-200 G-MIDP due for delivery this month.
For all you MANX fans, full integration into BA Citiflyer will be complete on 31st September 2002. The process is due to start on 31st March. I have a feeling their identity will be missed…

RE: General UK Airline News
My honest answer regarding British World – I haven’t got a clue I’m afraid. It was looking good for a March startup in February, using a pair of 733s and a 752. However, it’s all gone disturbingly quiet….I’m off to see if I can find out what’s going on. I’ll post my findings here when I do.

RE: Ryanair Lufthansa
So LH are jumping on the low cost bandwagon too? No surprises there then. Ryanair are expanding at an almost unbelievable rate, and many of the big carriers (BA, LH) have woken up and realised what a threat the low cost boys are. We’re not just talking Ryanair either – Just look at how well Easyjet have done. Both EZY and FR have also placed bloody big aircraft orders, and Ryanair’s boss seems to think he’ll be bigger than BA in a few years time!
We also have the arrival of BMIbaby to contend with – EMA is an ideal airport for a low cost operation, even Go are setting up a base at this airport.
It remains to be seen how well the low cost carriers will do in the future though – The airline industry is never all that predictable, and I’m sure LH will do all they can to keep their share of the market safe. Could this be the honeymoon period for Ryanair? Or could it be the start of a serious decline for Lufthansa? We’ll have to wait and see. My own personal view? I reckon LH will kick the upstart Irish carriers arse into orbit…..You don’t mess with the big boys and expect them not to hit back. I even reckon struggling BA have a few aces up their sleeve too….
RE: Future of 146/Avro RJ?
Probably because BAe were heavily involved in the Airbus projects. The 1-11 was abandoned, despite several new design projects (the 1-11 -700 and BAC 2-11) – this was partly due to lack of interest by the flag carrier, BA. The then state owned airline was concentrating on the Boeing twinjets (737, 757) for it’s short haul and European network.
The 146 was designed to fill a niche market, and back in the 1980’s, small regional jets were seen as something of a novelty. Remember all those routes the likes of the F27 and HS748 used to fly? They have all been replaced by the ERJ-145 and CRJ variants, but turboprops were seen as the only suitable aicraft type to operate on very short routes before the 90’s arrived. This was partly due to the fact they were a lot more economical to operate than say, a 737.
While the 146 and RJ series sold well in certain markets, the arrival of the CRJ and ERJ-145 sealed it’s fate. Both of the new twinjets could fly higher, faster and further than the 146 and were very economical to operate. Now, with the ERJ-170 around the corner and the CRJ-700 already in service, the Canadian and Brazilian aircraft builders are set to dominate the regional jet market. The proposed Bae RJX project was a case of too little too late. The recent downturn in the aviation industry was just the excuse Bae Systems needed to axe the RJX. A shame.
I suppose Bae want to concentrate heavily on it’s Airbus commitments, especially with the A380 in development, not to mention the recent arrival of the A340-600.
RE: Embraer 145
Not flown on an ERJ-145, but a lot of people seem to like flying on them. Hopefully one day I will…
I’ve flown on a CRJ-200LR and I thought is was a bit cramped, but was a nice little aircraft all round. The only reason I say cramped is due to the lack of headroom (then again, I am 6ft 4 inches tall!)
RE: Future of 146/Avro RJ?
The BAC 1-11 was the last good all round British airliner to be built. The 146 is popular in certain markets, but it is vastly underpowered and reports of fumes leaking into the cabin are all too common. They are not the most reliable of machines either – and they are not as economical as other regional jets.
Fact is, the 146/RJ/RJX are all far from perfect. The STOL capabilties do the type credit, but they are more costly to maintain – The engines on the early 146 examples are shocking.
I’m sorry If you don’t agree with this, but I live in the real world. The production life of this aicraft is now history.
RE: Do BA operate the A320 and 757 at LGW?
Most of the BA 757 fleet is being withdrawn anyway – 34 have been sold to DHL. The 757 fleet was always based at LHR. Same goes for the A320 – Though the ten ex B.Cal machines were based at LGW for a short period just after B.Cal was taken over by BA. They were soon based at LHR though. New aircraft, such as the A319, are based at LHR and are gradually replacing the diminishing 757 fleet.
As said above, Gatwick is losing the RJ100’s to BHX and MAN, and they will be part of the new BA Citiexpress. Gatwick will still have quite a few 737’s based though.
