RE: Monarch Airlines
I flew with MON a while ago and found them to be quite good. Charter airlines will never be described as world beating carriers, but the overall service standards on most charter carriers has come on a long way over the past decade. Unless of course, your airlines name is Airtours International.
RE: top ten charters
I’d say Britannia is the best I’ve flown with, although my flights with Monarch were good, plus I got to fly on a brand new factory fresh A321.
My worst charter flight has been with Airtours. What a pile of crap. I’m glad they’re having an image overhaul, they need it!
You still can’t beat Air Europe though. May they rest in peace.
RE: VC 10 and Il-62
The VC-10 (and Super VC-10) were poor sellers because they were designed too closely to the requirements of one airline – BOAC. The Il-62 sold in large numbers primarily to Aeroflot. Back when the Il-62 was introduced, Aeroflot only flew Russian built aircraft and lots of the aircraft were required because they were needed to replace older types and let us not forget the number of routes the airline flew in the former USSR. To suggest it was a vast network is an understatement. Hence why a considerable number of them were built.
As for the VC-10, it was designed with hot and high routes in mind – Take off performance was very impressive. However, it lacked the range to compete with the likes of the 707 and DC-8, and so only a small number were sold. I still think it ranks along side the 757 and 747 as one of the best looking aircraft ever built.
RE: The 757
I reckon the 757 is the best looking airliner ever produced. It’s a fantastic aircraft and is very versatile. It is both at home on short haul flights, and long haul sectors.
Plus, the power to weight ratio is unmatched in it’s class – even a fully loaded 757 doesn’t need much runway to become airborne. Compare a fully loaded A321 to it, and you really will notice what a turbo charged mean machine the 757 is.
The airlines seem to like it as well, 1,000 plus deliveries is excellent for a 170-200 seater aircraft. The 757 can actually seat up to 239 passengers infact.
Just a thought – It will celebrate it’s 20th birthday on 19th Feb 2002. Jeez, was it really as long as 20 years since it first flew? I am starting to feel old…
RE: GO at EMA
EMA could do with a boost in passenger services, and the arrival of GO is evident that this airport has a bright future ahead of it.
As for BMI, they have been trying to concentrate on services out of LHR for years and EMA has taken a back seat for a while now. It’s too early to speculate about them pulling out of the airport. Personally, I doubt they will pull out, though they may reduce frequency on some routes that Go will compete on.
RE: MyTravel Airways
The story of the female pilot at AIH is sadly, true. Airtours do have a bad reputation and having flown on one of their battered 757’s a while ago, I’ll make sure I won’t make the same mistake again. The cabin crew had a bad attitude and the aircraft was in need of a major overhaul. Plus, I’ve heard nothing but bad stories about their DC-10 fleet.
I wouldn’t wish them to go bust, but I do think it’s good that they are having an image change, it’s long overdue. I do agree though, the name does sound rubbish. Nice colour scheme though.
RE: A330-500
The A330-500 was proposed to Lufthansa some time ago, but the German carrier was said to be unimpressed with what Airbus had to offer. The project has since been shelved due to lack of interest. Lufthansa know they need a replacement for their A300/A310 fleet soon, but they seem unsure of what they want. They seriously considered buying the B757-300, but they’ve dropped those plans also.
The biggest issue with the A310 was range, but I’ve heard rumblings of a new version being talked about. I doubt if this will amount to anything though. The A310 would have outsold the 767 in the 1980s and 1990s if the range was greater. It had many things going for it – Wider cabin, the ability to hold industry standard LD3 containers, advanced wing design.
In the current economical climate, you’ll see much smaller types replacing such types as the 757/767 and A300/A310. BA are replacing their 757 fleet with A319s and A320s. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lufthansa go for the A321 for it’s short haul needs. Just a thought.
RE: Crossing the Atlantic Ocean with two engines
Out of the Boeing stable, the following twin jets are used on regular transatlantic/ETOPS services:
767-200ER
767-300ER
757-200 (UA use these from LA to Hawai as well)
777-200
777-300
767-400ER
Something like 75% of all scheduled transatlantic flights from Europe to the USA were made by B767 back in the mid 1990s.
The following Airbus models also make regular ETOPS flights:
A300-600/600R
A310-300
A330-300
A330-200
The A330 in particular is proving to be very popular on transatlantic flights.
However, it is the 767 which pioneered ETOPS flights with TWA and American Airlines among the first airlines to use twin jets on long hops over the pond. The Airbus models soon followed, although the A310 lost out to the 767 because of the shorter range. The retirement of old 747’s, L-1011’s and DC-10 types have seen these classics replaced by the likes of the 777 and A330. The big twin jets having similar capacity to the old tri-jets, but much more economical.
Twin jets are now a normal event on todays long haul services. The novelty factor that was witnessed in the 1980’s has now worn off and people have accepted that it is safe to fly with just two engines instead of three of four.
RE: US Tragedy
24 hours after this attrocity and I still cannot comprehend what has happened. When I was first informed of the first airliner crashing into the WTC, I thought it was a sick joke. I then switched on the TV and moments later I saw what looked like a 767 smash into the second tower. I couldn’t even talk after I witnessed this horrific act.
My thoughts are with our friends in America. You have my deepest sympathies.
RE: BA & concorde pilot trouble
For many BA line captains, getting the chance to fly on Concorde is like being in the USAF and being offered a chance at being an astonaut. If it was me, I’d jump at it.
RE: Virgin Sun
First Choice is to take full control of Virgin Sun during November. Air 2000 will then operate all flights that Virgin Sun flew. The small Virgin Sun Airbus fleet will not be part of the package however.
On a different note, I’ve heard that Monarch are up for sale. Anybody have any news on this?
RE: whats the best airline and aircraft you have flown
You’ve obviously not been on a Boeing 767 then. As nice as the aircraft is, I class the 767 as a ‘pretend widebody’. Having flown on both the Boeing twin and the A340, the latter wins hands down.
RE: Britannia
This new ‘uniform’ livery Britannia will share with Hapag-Lloyd disturbs me a little. Both said carriers will lose their individual identity and the new colours as a whole are quite poor. I agree that perhaps both airlines were in need of a new lick of paint, but going down this avenue of the blue ‘Korean Air’ style colours is not favoured.
I’m not the only one to be negative of this new image. Many people have voiced strong opinions and have been very critical of TUI.
You never know though. BA reversed it’s world images and is now paiting the whole of it’s fleet with the union flag image. Perhaps if public outcry is as strong as it was with the BA livery, then maybe TUI will reconsider. Personally, I doubt this will happen, especially after several million pounds has been spent developing the new identity.
RE: Brittannia new livery
Everybody I know that has seen the new BY colours has reacted in a very, very negative way. I thought JMC and Air 2000 had bad liveries, but the new BY c/s is ridiculous.
It was not Britannia itself which decided on the new colours, it was a TUI idea. All charter airlines which are owned by the latter will all wear the same scheme, be it Hapag lloyd or Britannia. The only difference between carriers will be the titles. This is a great shame as we are crying out for some nice original liveries at the moment, especially in the world of charter airlines. The only recent new colour scheme which has been any good is BMI, and that is a scheduled carrier.
Still, BA backed down when it tried something different with the world images, so maybe we will see TUI change it’s mind when it realises what a mistake has been made and encounters customer reaction.
RE: New/restyled a/c c/s in the planning?
Britannia Airways is getting a new livery, along with it’s sister company Hapag Lloyd. As both carriers now come under the World of TUI banner, they will have an identical livery. I’ve seen the colours already (a Hapag 737 was the first to be repainted) and they look very much like the Korean Air livery(!)
Personally, I’m horrified by the new colours. Both Britannia and Hapag Lloyd are due for a new livery as their current colours have been around for several years, but did they have to go for such a horrible scheme?
