RE: Dissapearing DC 10
The Northwest DC10 fleet will be eventually replaced by the Airbus A330, the airline selecting the Airbus product over the Boeing 777 for it’s long haul fleet renewal. Some of the NW DC10 domestic services will be replaced by the Boeing 757-300, several of which are on order. The last NW DC10 is due to be retired in around five years time, so they will be around for a while longer yet.
RE: which is the best airport
Oh yes, and how could I forget to mention my all time favourite airport? Birmingham International. It may not be classed as a major gateway like the ones that serve the capital cities, but it has gone from good to excellent in just a few short years. The Millenium link which connects the Main Terminal in Eurohub has to be seen to be believed. Birmingham’s Eurohub terminal was the first ‘hub and spoke’ concept in Europe. The airport is getting bigger all the time and has attracted some world class airlines such as Emirates.
RE: which is the best airport
I’ve heard that the new Athens airport is good. I’ve been to a few major airports over the past few years and I’d rate AMS as well. I don’t like LHR very much, I find it can be quite intimidating, and terminals 1, 2 and 3 are not very spacious. Stansted is good though, the terminal building gives off a relaxing atmosphere and is a nice alternative to the other (overcrowded) London airports.
RE: TS flight makes an emergency landing
The people on board that A330 are very lucky indeed. If was not for the fact that the A330 has a big wing config, it could very well have ditched in the sea. What would have happened if it was something smaller like a 757? It is horrific to imagine.
The A330 in question (don’t know the reg’n) has apparently suffered from fuel leakage in the past, and an Air Transat engineer accompanied each flight prior to the Azores incident, just incase it occured again. Sadly, the engineer was not on the near ill fated flight.
In my previous post I mentioned that the ETOPS certification was pulled. The latest I’ve heard is that it has not been pulled, but has been restricted. I understand that this only applies to the TS A330 fleet.
RE: TS flight makes an emergency landing
All sorts of stuff is now going on with the A330 incident. I’ve heard that the aircraft ‘involuntary’ dumped fuel. All of the main gear tyres burst upon landing, but at least the aircraft made it down intact with no loss of life. ETOPS ops on the Air Transat A330 fleet has now been pulled while the authorities investigate the matter. The A310/757/Tristar fleets are now covering the A330 flights.
RE: A315`S FOR AIRTOURS???
Well maybe I’m a bit behind the times, but I have not heard of the A315. What size of aircraft is this Airbus?
RE: Help!!! We need website helpers!!!!!
I’ll be happy to supply all the information you need about Birmingham International Airport and all of the airlines that use this airport, and Coventry as well.
RE: Where do LTE go in the UK??
They are supposed to be starting services from BHX this summer, but that is all I know I’m afraid.
RE: Boeing 747-436 – What does the 36 stand for?
The ’36’ in 747-436 is the Boeing customer code for British Airways. If you look at the other Boeing types in the BA fleet, you will see that they also have the same code, eg Boeing 767-336 and Boeing 757-236.
Other customer codes include ’04’ for Britannia Airways (BY). If you see one of their B757’s, it will be a -204. Japan Airlines have the designated code ’46’, so for example if you saw a 744 in their colours, it would be a Boeing 747-446.
Leasing companies such as GECAS have their own Boeing customer code too, hence why you may see something weird like a Boeing 757-2G5 or Boeing 737-3S3.
hope this helps,

RE: Concorde Flying again
Several sources I’ve read suggest that BA and AF are working together to get the aircraft back in the air by September, although I could imagine that maybe some French people could be more reluctant than us Brits to get Concorde back in the air due to the fact that the July 2000 disaster happened on French soil with an AF machine.
The rumours of BA purchasing the AF fleet are utter hogwash to be quite honest. BA would never be able to sustain the extra airframes – there wouldn’t be enough demand to fly eleven a/c in one fleet.
Plus, if AF didn’t want their fleet, why would they be carrying out the mods in the first place? Many French people do want to see Concorde in the skies, as like us Brits, it is a matter of national pride.
RE: Concorde Flying again
Well, as I write this post, G-BOAF is now airbourne and should be on it’s way back to Brize Norton. She took off safely from LHR, rotating at 190mph and darted straight towards the atlantic. Like Keltic said, good luck to her.
P.S. – A free flight on Concorde – I’d sell one of my kidney’s to fly on one!
RE: The loss of regional routes
I think it has been obvious for quite some time that BA is only interested in LHR. LGW has suffered due to BA moving flights to LHR – Given the congestion problems at LHR, BA seem a bit short sighted neglecting Gatwick like this. They have been doing a lot of cost cutting measures since Rod Eddington took over the helm, so quite a few routes which don’t make as much money as others have been dropped.
As for the regional airports, BA seem quite happy to let franchise partners such as Maersk UK expand the route network. It is a shame to see the channel islands getting neglected, because there is demand for flights from both Jersey and Guernsey.
RE: Charter Airlines
My vote goes to Air Europe. They may have folded ten years ago, but I used to fly them all the time in the 1980’s. They were excellent and had a very young fleet of 737’s and 757’s. It is nice to see the former Spanish associate, Air Europa still in action though. They now fly the 777, which is nice to see.
On the whole though, I think the standards of service offered by charter airlines is quite high compared to yesteryear. The likes of Air 2000 and Airtours International offer mixed class configurations on their long haul services, and IFE is of a good standard.
RE: BA’s Deli Service on Shuttles
I agree with what you say too Keltic. It’s just that I’m a bit ‘old fashioned’ in some respects perhaps. BA does need much to learn from other large airlines in terms of catering though. Airlines such as Singapore and Cathay put it to shame.
By the way, profit forcasts have recently been slashed by market analysts for BA. Seems Rod Eddington and his boys still have much work to do before BA can return to former glories.
On another BA related topic, their schedules state Concorde will be in service from 1st August. Sounds like they are doing something right at the moment then…
