    The Flanker’s radar at least was far more powerful than anything the west had at the time. Needless to mention the unprecedented at that time HMS and IRST, not to be found in any (or just a handful) western airctaft? Both aircraft you mentioned were not made to be techno-savvy, just capable enough to win a war rather than maintain peace. If the mission computer’s processor of the Fulcrum was a few Mhz slower the the F-16, it would make no difference during a duel.

    – F 14 radar was more powerfull than Flanker one; not to mention the capabilkity;
    – HMD was not “unprecedented” the first operational HMS was fileded on US Navy F 4 Phantom 10 years before Su 27;
    – I don’t know how on earth some posters think that the Russians invented the IRTS? The first IRST was on F 101 “Voodoo” in 1962. All the USAF fighters un til F 4 (F 101, F 102, F 106, F 4) and all the US Navy Fighters until F 14 (F8, F4, F14) had IRSTs. Tht’s ~ 10,000 of them iin total. F4 alone was built in over 5,500 exemplaries and all had IRST.

    thing is, the F-35 isn’t very far from getting sufficiently above initial price estimation as to be legally required to be cancelled (Nunn-McCurdy law requires to terminate any project going 25% above budget), not many did so and got into service anyway…

    accirding to this article:

    http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/02/gates-sacks-stealth-jet-chief-blasts-troubling-record-of-crucial-plane/

    the initial cost overruns could be as high as 45%… meaning that, legally, it should have been terminated long ago…

    Qouting from APA/Kopp ? No, thanks!

    Is there a current, still valid source which confirms that? I have read that it was planned in the past, but got the impression it was canceled or at least further postponed on cost grounds and due other priorities.

    Unfortunaltelly, no. The source wasin fencecheck.com, before USAF security guys red “Dozer” posts and forced the site to erase them :D. He said that the MIDS “are there” (I suppose Elemndorf AFB) but not yet installed.

    Do you have anything valid to contribute to the topic or that was just a highly intelectual catch phrase?

    Had you given yourself the time to read the severall topics about the JSF development in this forum, you would be aware that what i have wrote, something that seems so obvious to you, has been chalenged, again, and again, and again, not only by several of our forum coleagues, but by the likes of Tom Burbage, Peter De Vries, or the entire Norwegian MOD…
    So, yes, in my “not so humble opinion” i think that pointing to an historic upwards cost spiral in the JSF is interesting by several obvious reasons.

    OK, let’s reformulate it for you: do you know any military A/C program that remained within the initial price estimation and deadlines ?

    Unfortunately, we have to keep reminding everyone that the price is going up, because of the large number of Lockheed Martin fanboys who insist, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that the F-35 is the great exception, & the price is known & fixed.

    I am not one of the LockMart pool of fanboys that believe in fixed price; however, I am sure that the full-production F 35 will be less expanesive than some people (quoting LRIP price) think.

    Buddy, I’ve been cool since last Friday :diablo:

    If a 40 min. first flight fullfil your dreams, you are an easy man to please. If I were you, I’ll aim for a full operational 5th gen. fighter.

    But MADL would replace the IFDL, so are there no plans to replace the F-22’s JTIDS?

    As I said in a previous post, in 2013 the F 22 will receive a full Link 16 (MIDS) capabil=ty, instead the present receiver-only.

    The thing is that, each and every February, year after year (well last year, the budget documents were delayed) we have been presented with higher numbers.
    Pick the USAF Budget from 2006 onwards, drop the numbers on an excel chart, then turn them into graphics, its an interesting exercise.
    There?s absolutely no guarantes that next year, in February, we are going to be presented with identical numbers to the ones that are on the 2011 USAF Budget.
    The idea that its possible to compute the REC Fly Away in 2007 US$ for a production run that goes for the next 25/30 years is just a “pie in the Sky”.

    Unbelievable!

    Do you really mean that F 35 will end up costing more than originally estimated???? It must be a first ! Stupid yanks…

    Of course they will, no doubt taking a lead from this very forum- having exorcised that Demon of Stupidity (with wall-eye vision), who claimed the inlets were straight through.

    Then the nonsensical, die-hard PAK-FA detractors will be left with the fickle, loose change arguments like ‘look at those rivets!! that IRST & engine nozzles don’t look stealthy…’

    Hey, relax, it was a joke, Kopp did an “assesment” of F 35 stealth to laugh of. The irony was directed to APA idiots, not to PAK-FA.

    BTW, if someone doubt/question the last russian wonder/uber/hyper fighter, is not a “detractor”. Cool down…

    The F-22 is getting MADL, not Link16.

    MADL is directional and Ku-band, not L-band so the PAK FA’s L-Band antennas are useless to intercept or jam the datalink.

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/04/15/325156/usaf-selects-datalink-to-bridge-communications-gap-between-f-22-and.html

    Both F 35 and f 22 will get both Link 16 and MADL.

    The EW systems on the F-22 and F-35 will detect L-Band transmitters and they both use a directional datalink (not Link16) as their standard datalink, think quasi LPI AESA datalink. In combat ops they will only have Link16 set to receive (as the F-22 CANNOT transmit Link16).

    Not for now. In 2013, F 22 will have a transmission Link 16 capability. (trans

    Well it’s not a plastic LEGO toy, is it? 😮

    More clever people than both of us, said that is a pasive element for locating L-band datalinks (Link 16) standard on US and NATO fighters. But , hey maybe you know better…
