    ATA pilots list

My thanks to you both for the info, & sexuality of this pilot, which over the years my memory has no doubt played tricks on me in thinking M A was a man, maybe because both male & female pilots wore long trousers at that time — & in those days, trousers on women was just coming into vogue!!!!
Would some kind person please scan a pic or two of her to help finish my research into my memories please?
I was hoping, as a very long shot, that she would still be around to recall the day that she smashed LZ791 (G-AKEX) into a load of sandbags, that really would have been the ‘icing on the cake!!!

The name Harry Smith certainly rings a bell — could he be the chap I worked with on Proctors all those years ago — could it be Harry A Smith ? — surely no book is worth that money — IF he sold many of them he must now be a millionaire !!!!

With regard to the book ‘One foot On The Ground’ I really do wish that I had written it, but sadly I did not Chaps.
I have often thought of writing a few chapters, but as yet have never got round to it. — thinking of titles, perhaps I would have to borrow the title :- ‘One Foot In The Grave’
In fact I have’nt yet come across the title mentioned, so perhaps one of you kind chaps would tell me the gist of it please.

Happy New Year to you all.

    KEX

Is anything known about Wallis Hole Aviation & Harold Hext ? & where they were based?
    Dustyone

Even if it was registered as G-AKEX in 1947 it didn’t recive any CofA until 17.02.50 – the owner was then Henry Hext, London, according to my information. Last registered UK owner was Wallis Hole Aviation Ltd.

    KEX

Has anyone got the list of owners, & where KEX was based in the UK prior to be exported to Sweden. It appears that she had numerous colour schemes prior to her last UK appearance, which we think was Cream & dark Red, under that there is what appears to be a ‘metalic’ Blue scheme — does anyone have any pics of her in any of these schemes Please? Dustyone

    Hi Papa Lima,

I was wrong about the year this pic was taken – must be 1950 (I will correct that). But the Proctor wasn’t reg in Sweden until Oct 1951. The story of 1950-51:

17.02.50 UK CofA issued for G-AKEX.
20.12.50 Bought by Swede Lars-Ove Göransson via Wallis Hole Aviation Ltd. for the sum of £217.
10.01.51 G-AKEX crashed on arrival at Eslöv during the ferry to the new owner.
    08.02.51 G-AKEX cancelled. A/c repaired.
10.10.51 Reg as SE-BTR to Lars-Ove Göransson, Malmö.

If they are caught, seal them in a Barnes Wallis bomb & take them for a spin over the Mohne dam, — one-way journey !!

    ‘M’s new Proctor

My only other wish is that I could work on her to bring back the new life that she so richly deserves— I cannot send enough words to express my delight. YOU KNOW WHO I AM M.B — hope to hear the good news from you that the ‘Hammers & glue pots’ are on the go !!!!

    Upwood

I was on Lancaster 111s there in 1947/48 & made my very first flight in one of them on a cross-country around England & Scotland —- later on parts of the ‘Dam Busters’ film was shot there.

    Proctor emblem

It is indeed close to me, & the owner is my friend of mine– last week-end we uncovered her remains & laid them out in the ‘shape’ of a beautiful Mk5 — this was when we noticed the cowling emblem

    Von Werra

[The Battle of Britain. net seems to leave a lot to be desired in correct details — for example it states SATURDAY 31st AUGUST — this was in fact a FRIDAY— how do I know — well I was there — when at about 4.30pm I saw Hurricane P3119 –( P/Off JLW Ellecombe ) after it crashed landed near my home — I saw Hurricane R4213 go down in flames, killing Sgt.Feliks Gmur,— I saw a He111 which they shot down, & landed a couple of miles from my home, — it was one of 10 en-route to attack Vauxhall Motors at Luton, where vast damage ensued, along with many casualties in that area.
Official records name Flt/Lt John Terrance aged 24. of 41Sqdn Hornchurch in Spitfire P9428 who shot-down Von Werra at 10am on 5th Sept. 1940 — crash-landing at Winchet Hill Loves farm, Marden Kent — Terrance was killed a few hours later that day,( 3.25pm ) after colliding in mid-air with Spitfire R6635 flown by Sqdn/Ldr. H R L Hood aged 32 yrs, over Bonvills farm Benfleet Essex.
Von Werra lived a further 4 yrs before perishing in Oct. 1944
