Thank you all for even more input ! I have been looking into the history of the(only 14) of these monsters from the past.
One particular aircraft, 42-65414, spent six weeks during 1948 carrying some large tonnage whilst taking part in the Berlin Airlift, but was too heavy for some of the temp runways.
On 25 November 1949, the same aircraft crossed the atlantic carrying 103 troops, another record for the time, it made landfall at Marham, Norfolk.
When I was so young and impressionable ! whilst this aircraft was at Stansted, someone told me of the tunnel within the wing ! don’t think I believed them at the time ?
Have found another photo of HP-385, this time at Heathrow, thanks to abpic !

Mark V, Must admit I was fooled (once again not difficult), I remember at the time of taking that pic, my son asked “why stick a pole into the bum of a nice plane like that” I just said ummmmm ? now I can answer his question. Still looks the part from my perspective ? thank you. Keith.

I have just “google earthed” the location (78.07N 38.10W) of the hastybird in greenland, which John Cooper Knows all about ! and its very very white !
“Does the team think” that , pressumably, as this aircraft is buried in ice, will it be any better preserved, or just crushed, should it ever be recovered ? Could this be one of the very few “advantages” of global warming ? Keith.

One of those days that stays with you, I was nine at the time and remember my mother being very emotional !
Should anyone be interested, I have found a small video clip of the aftermath.
As I cannot link the URL, this is where to go :-
    Aviation Safety Network.
click on “database” on left hand list.
click on “piston aircraft” in type index.
click on Airspeed AS.57 Ambassador, which is top of list.
    click on “7 hull losses”.
click on date 06-FEB-1958, read and scroll down ! Keith.

Dave F86, Yes good thought, I have looked at the excellent fleet history in Susan and Ian Ottaway’s brilliant book “Flying With The Stars” and it would appear that some yorks carried on using trooping serials untill at least 1955 ? In the MW and WW prefix, thats as far as I can go at the mo, so over to you ! Keith.

Or maybe this one which is Scottish Airways at Luqa ? ran off runway following an attempt to start an engine by windmilling the prop !

Zebedee, This could be a long haul, almost all aviation databanks only list “fatal” accidents ? Morbid though this may be, survivable accidents don’t make the news !
If this flight was heading for Stansted (check the spelling) then it must have been operated by one of the following operators of yorks at that time :-

Air Charter, doubtfull, as most of their trooping was to Woomera or Christmas Island.

Skyways of London, very possible as they “lost” two yorks at Luqa ! and were heavily involved with trooping flights.

Scottish Airways, also very possible, well experienced at dropping yorks out of the sky allover the place !

Would this pic bring back any memories, Skyways.
