capabilities, I still believe the MiG-25 Foxbat is a superb looking aircraft and I do hope that at least one manages to find it’s way into an aviation museum – perhaps the IAF would like to donate one, rather than just break them up for scrap.

Given the growing level of conciousness about History and Preserving Heritage within the Indian Air Force, I am quite sure that all the remaining foxbats will head for preservation at various locations.

George, I think our chap is getting confused with the alleged flooding of charbatia and its ARC aircraft. aka ARC ‘spy planes’ πŸ˜€

A small titbit – about the 102 Sqn (operates MiG-25) is the only _fighter_ squadron in the IAF to be commanded by a Group Captain. Rest are commanded by Wg Cdrs.

I just hope these birds are given a finale with lots of photo-op for the media and that they find their way in to the IAF museum.

Technically its a recce squadron, and we know recce sqns are always commanded by Gp Capt… :p but thats me in the pedantic mode. πŸ˜€

It’s wings were cut off to facilitate moving from Colerne to Cosford – an act of butchery I find hard to understand.

and i think it happened in the late 70s?

Anything related to RAF in India and SEAC. But i NEVER see any of those here…

(the sole exceptions being the recent ‘Indian..’ and ‘Defiant..’ threads) πŸ™‚

Talking about the Ottawa lib, I recently uploaded this small story on my website.

    http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/History/2000s/Dragon.html
Anyone figure out why it is painted “she was a reluctant dragon” in the nose gear bay?

I have to ask a question here, if Collings can put an airframe that has been grounded for years back into the air, surely all the other four liberators are prime candidates for an airworthy restoration right?

Landing up at the Indian Air Force Museum way back in 1989 – still a kid. with a Russian model camera – and no film! :P… ah atleast I managed to ‘locate’ the place for future visits. I remember the Hurricane was in plain silver finish – too bad i missed a color shot of it from that time.

How can we forget the one wheel down landing of the B-17 in Tora Tora Tora – that was real wasn’t it?

    Syc and Alan,

We found out today that it is indeed a Mk III , confirmed by the stencils on the panels and ofcourse the unmistakable rounded wingtips. VV211 / VT-CXJ / HB546 .

It is indeed a historic airframe in the Indian Context, one of the only three F.3s inducted and probably the only survivor..

    Thanks for your help!

    Syc,

You got what our chaps are trying to do. VV211 / HB546 /VT-CXJ is the aircraft in question. The panels (about 3-4 of them) certainly carry VV211. But as you said, there is always scope of panels being interchanged. So will get to know tommorrow if the other identification points check out well.

I dont think there will be any paint stripping exercise, because I expect it has a dozen layers of silver paint on it πŸ™‚

BR,s last update in Dec 2004 says 72 Bisons have been inducted.

We were quite close. We had actually said 64. (the Trainers obviously will have to be excluded)

    http://www.keralanext.com/news/indexread.asp?id=170354 says

The upgrade of 75 jets had already been completed.

And this was at a Press conference in Delhi today

Incidentally the ‘Indian Air Force’ was formed on the 1st of April 1933. When No.1 Squadron IAF was formed at Drigh Road in Karachi. That day was observed as teh IAF Day for many decades till the 70s it ws changed to another date.

What is this fascination with the 1st of April? I take it even the RAF Was formed or named on this date?
