Contrary to media reports – CarNic Air Force Station is NOT completely destroyed. It has been physically battered and about a 100 out of the 1000 personnel and their families are either killed or missing. According to the Air Chief’s interview, the officers quarters were the worst hit as they were near the waterfront. The base has been now made active and the runway is currently operational and taking in relief flights. Evacuations and Supply missions are being carried out even as we speak.

    Dan, should I say….smashing…

Pinpup girl art is very rare on Indian Air Force aircraft. The best one would come across are birds and girl friend names. I guess its a culture thing. I would have assumed this was the work of a British RAF officer but for the fact Kohat was an all Indian Air base from 45 onwards…

Yeah, Pauline Mc Wee or Mee Wee and Smashing/Smashe.. at the end.

Google search for Pauline McWee turns up naught.. hence the query

Maybe the title of this thread needs to be changed.

Certainly the first time I opened the thread i expected to read an obit. Though I dont think this discussion is in anyway disrespectful, perhaps a different title that describes the true nature of the thread might help.

    Fellas

I have read Frank Carey being refered to as ‘Chota’ Carey. Chota in hindi means – Small /Short / Titch..etc etc.. So Is there something behind the name suiting his stature in the photograph?

A Spit from India from a training unit with a lightning flash on its fuselage. Maybe they got inspired by this photograph of the same theme

Silly Question it might be for you well informed types but what keeps us Indians from displaying Rank & Name of the officers from our fighters/ bombers? Most notably the USAF has rank & Name (Flt.Lt.XXX.XXXXX) or (Capt.XXXX.XXXXXX) – mentioned on the canopy/nose section of the F, F/B & Bs. Does it have to do with secrecy or it’s just not our tradition ? Well informed replies please ! 🙂

Hey, Top Gun is so much better than PH!

At least it’s all real planes, no silly CGI!

Yes,….but MiG-28s? PH is better!

These “Before” photographs are all gems. Anyone ever toyed around with the idea of a ‘Spitfire Relics Worldwide’ book? I would certainly buy one!

At the very least wouldn’t the Engines survive? they are too big and heavy to cart away and smelt. or if the ac dived in, be burried six foot under. maybe of interest only to Aviation Archaeologists (sic)

There could be some inaccessible aircraft which would survive over the years. esp in jungle areas.

Thanks everyone – I will first try to find out if anyone does the telecine transfer, then worry about opening it.

I wouldn’t want to land a Delta Wing like the mirage on the belly on a concrete runway.
They can probably be done on a track with foam – not sure if we have that now.

IAF press releases mostly dont give the whole picture – So its best for us not to speculate.
