Lohegaon is a Military Airport first and a civilian airport second. Its not under the AAI (Airports Authority of India) – but directly under the Ministry of Defence, the Air Force can do what they want.

A small portion of it is let out to the Civil Ops. The flights in a day are not more than half a dozen (three in morning and three in night?) or something similar.

If the exercise involves use of Foam on the runway (as some vernacular reports had suggested) I would think that would shut it down for that timeframe atleast.

There is a Sealand there in Goa without engines (and fake cowlings and props in place) . There is also a Dove/devon there but I think it has its original cowlings and props in place, so the engines could be from either?

The Tigermoth engine I think figures because VT-DBK is displayed nearby.

The only thing now left is that sad looking radial – there are no radial engined aircraft in the vicinity (apart from a harvard, which retains its engine).

BTW The number ’40’ on the cope india patch stands for 40 Wing – Which is the operational name for Maharajpur AFS (Gwalior).

I was on my first trip overseas to the US when i picked up my copy of the flypaper with the article on the Egyptian spit wreck – At that time I was a clueless clod on who the author was (subsequently I did re-visit the article once i discovered WIX and this board).

The reason i mention is that i scanned the picture (and the relevant Spit Intl entry) and sent it ‘up north’ when MV459 came out of the river bed. I assumed that was a great way to display a wreck and not to junk it because it looked like ‘junk’. apparently they never ‘saw’ the image 😀 But I did show the story to those folks later on.
