    RE: Vampire Flies!

Wow, Wonderful news. It must be the Vampire with the IAF’s Vintage flight. True it had spent its time on the ground for years. I still remember its last public flight in 1989, it flew a formation with the IAF’s sole flyable spit (which incidentaly has not taken to air in years -Status unknown).

Kabir, did you get a chance to view it?

    Hi Snoopy,

Now that you mention it, I remember about M S Pujji serving in North Africa. The fact slipped my mind when i posted the above.

Hope we can dig up info on the “Truce” and “lunch” by Rommel.

I think Mick must be refering to this page

    http://www.neeacr.fsnet.co.uk/HurricaneZ3150.htm

about Pt Off H C Mehta who died in a training accident flying a Hurricane.

Very interesting post Snoopy. I would say that most of the pilots who flew in britain and in the RAFVR under different commands finally came back to be a part of the IAF/RIAF by the end of the WW2.

Now the question comes, were there aircrew who were in the RAF of Indian/Subcontinental origin and did not join the IAF by the war’s end? i.e. crew who started thier career in the RAF and served only with the RAF?

RE: Indian Hurricane – Serial No

    Snoopy,

With ref to the Hurricane having Indian Serial Numbers.. Indian Serial Numbers have come into vogue only after independence i.e. 15th Aug 47, I dont think the IAF had its own serail numbers before that. Even as late as Oct Nov 1947, IAF operated tempests under thier original serial numbers (the MW and PR series)

Now all accounts i read mention that the Hurricane was retired in 1945 and few if any units may have had Hurri’s on thier strenght in 1946. I dont know what the situation might have been in 1947. so iMHO no Hurricane was on the inventory of the IAF as on Aug 1947. All units by that time flying Spitfires and Tempests. so I dont know the origin of AB832.

    regards

    Colin,

Thanks for the information. That confirms that Majumdar would have flown Mustangs, and the Indian Air Force is not wrong when they said he was with a Mustang Squadron. My apologies for confusing 268 with 263 (and leading everyone offtrack! :))

    Thanks.
