Lancman,
“I’d be surprised if they let just anyone ‘have a go’ anyway!”, is not quite the same as saying they wouldn’t.
Otherwise why has it not been possible to swap rides between the 17 and the Lanc because given the opportunity, the chance would have been taken long ago.
“Steve, I’ve DVD’d the first episode and I’ll try to catch the rest”.
Would you be willing to ‘distribute’ some copies when completed, for cash of course?
Bomberboy
You wouldn’t happen to have any influence on the Lottery Panel would you Bruce?
Some very good points being observed.
The programme was made with the General Public in mind, not the likes of us.
Eric, you are also making sense with regards to specification shortfalls, but nonetheless whether through reliability or design, a shortfall is a shortfall.
Those shortfalls then dictate how the asset is used.
i.e. did you ever see a piccy of a Lanc on Glider Tug duties?
I have seen quite a few with Halibags and masses with Stirlings.

Lancman “The BBMF aren’t in a position to lend their Lanc out to anyone- remember, every hour of it’s flying time each year is very strictly managed, and there just wouldn’t be the required spare hours available for the filming. Plus, I’d be surprised if they let just anyone ‘have a go’ anyway!
I doubt any civvy would get a chance to fly it anyway because it’s MOD property, let alone the other potential reasons you listed.
“They did kind of make it sound as if the young crew would be all alone with Sally B, though clearly that won’t be the case!”
Correct. They won’t be!
“Fancy mistaking NX611 for PA474, tut tut!”
I agree, there’s no excuse for that one!
They did show the name and the number.
Bomberboy
Eric Mc “I’ll excuse them the odd “factual error”
Wasn’t there another slight shortfall with the ‘Halibag’ in that I think it had divided bomb bays which meant that bombs only up to a certain size could be carried?
I’m positive that was the same for the Stirling too, regardless that the U/C was not too good and that it could not reach the altitude due to it ‘reduced’ wingspan.
In programmes like these, you will always find something that is not right, I bugs the preverbial out of me.
Otherwise it’s not a bad programme, after all, what else is there on telly that we are all big fans of and is new?
Bomberboy
Type approved it for who?
It must have been a remarkable ‘upgrade’ from a Luftwaffe Mk III
Bomberboy
Wow a Lotus Carlton!
Wasn’t that the £48k in 1990, 377BHP ‘175+ mph cause for public concern’ worlds fastest production supersaloon?
Cor! wish I could afford one of those!
Bomberboy
Surely anyone answering this one would leave themselves open?
However you are right, I remember it well, it was different.
Bomberboy
I shall be watching it at 7.30 tonight?
Bomberboy
Didn’t take long getting here, but access to specific areas appears to be a ‘non starter’.
Bomberboy
Now there’s a thought!
Thanks Ron,
You’re right, we sure were lucky, some in more ways than one!
No mention yet of the thousands of rounds of 50cal blanks that were fired off from live weapons. oh dear boys with big toys eh!
One of the local Firemen was arrested for stealing shortly aftrer the crash.
He had removed a dummy 50cal or two from the wreckage and had taken it/them home.
B-17 man
quote – ‘What happened to the tail gunners up and over sliding window that I can see in the Sierra boot with your toolbox?’
That’s a very good question, might have something to do with the scrappy throwing a wobbly and taking it out of the car again.
but that didn’t stop me removing some other items.
It’s a French jobbie alright.
Mary alice was delivered in pieces.
Hendons came from the states and is vastly different to this.
Yank 17’s tend to have Neptune/B-29 wheels, this still had 17 wheels on and I think Pink Lady still does, Sally has 29’s on.
It could be Thunderbird, Chateu-du-verneil, or Pink Lady.
I think it is Chateu.
All,

The rudder is at Duxford, along with a few other little gems.
An arrangement was made for some of the pieces to be removed before the scrap men entered the fray.
Basically the IGN bods arrived in a king air or something like that, looked at the wreck, put their arms up, said mae-oui, got back in their plane and went home.

Bang on! I can remember the chaps face who was trying to buy it, but I cannot remember his name.

I have an even better one somewhere, On an evening, with the same line up, but PA474 flew right over the top and I was, for once in the right place at the right time.
I’ve just worked out who go4b17 is B-17 man will follow.
